As you know, if you read this blog I live in the Russian-Jewish District called Little Russia in West Hollywood, California.
I can’t help but notice how all through West Hollywood the Crown as a symbol is appearing in store front windows. West Hollywood is known for its love of plastic Princess crowns imagery–but this Crown is distinctly a King’s crowd. It is solid and a symbol of hope and just rule. Interesting too is the fact that the crown symbols being displayed are majestically painted, like art of Leonardo da Vinci’s era or something groovy like that. They’re a study. The return of majesty is what people want in a shite economy. An interesting expression of desire.
What do I get from this shift in consciousness in West Hollywood window store front windows? Perhaps it signifies that–
Already the American people await in anticipation the royal wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William. Their retail hopes all hinge on her and the special ring she’s wearing of an amazing woman America once loved so much.
I know that these are U.K crowns, because one of them has an inscription written in Gaelic of Scotland in glitter paint. I don’t know why, but perhaps because my Kiwi ancestors descend from Grahamstown of Scotland, the image made me shed a tear of joy. Weird.
I’ll try and get a photo of this for you at some point. America is being so warm towards the UK right now, gauging from these artistic expressions in the West Hollywood hood, a trend setting capitol of the US in terms of what’s hot and what’s not-that feeds into Hollywood’s studios’ elite and is emulated by all in the world. In terms of creative IP being used without return or reward shared back by others, West Hollywood is perhaps one of the most exploited cities in the world for IP theft–however, the city continues to lead with what they feel is more fun for the world. No other deep reason (sadly) just more fun. And what’s wrong that? A crown as a symbol of fun times ahead. I can go with that!
“Crowns are US 2011″ is the message increasingly being expressed by the American people.
Kate Middelton has just made Barbara Walters final list of The Ten Most Fascinating People of America for 2010. This image courtesy of Rocco Pop Revolution. We are on the verge of a cultural revolution where the UK and the USA forge tighter bonds and better blending of cultures.

In Oscars Hollywood history, the Cocoanut Grove was the venue celebrating Americans much loved art form of Hollywood’s cinema’s best awards for excellence.
From this image we see a Palm Tree as a symbol of Peace. Whether a palm is found in California, throughout The South Pacific, in Israel or Iran provides a message for us all to ponder as a symbol.
A palm tree grows peacefully in earth’s soil, irrespective of how people draw up maps of territory. Its a very humble tree. It just grows. Its leaves offer shade in extreme heat conditions for people and camels alike. It always signifies that water is found nearby, water being a symbol of life that all growing things need to live. A palm tree’s fruit is eaten by people of Californian, people in Iran or Israel alike. A palm tree does not discriminate. It looks after people equally.
May leaders of the world (G20 Economies Summit leaders included) all have a movie date with Peace, in their hearts concerning the future direction of the world and showing mercy to others, not all that different from ourselves.
This is California’s story in the City of Angels. We are peace messengers in The City of Angels–just like a palm tree is. May the art of peace be the most glorified American art of all and bring forth its fruit in due season.
I think an emphasis on water systems watering people who don’t have it in the world with clean drinking water, would be an intelligent thing of G20 leaders to obsess on at this point in World History. With the existing wealth all G-20 Summit leaders nations have, let’s leak some water these nations way who are without.
That’s smart leadership. Instead of just “World Economy, War Economy,” as buzz words, let’s think “Water Economy” too for all people in the world. A war on lack for the least in the world is what’s needed. That’s true power, to think that way and shows respect for basic human rights in the world.

GIBBS ST “ON” – WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY, ROBERT GIBBS ON “COMPROMISED DIPLOMACY” OVER WIKILEAKS DOCS IRAN SCANDAL
Reading very Catholic–this method of information distribution, I must say.
Here’s what the White House is reporting via the recent Wikileaks Docs political scandal that sheds much light on international leaders angst, frustration, fear?/ genuine neighborly concern? and anger with their problems and misunderstandings with Iran. I write this in California where many people from Iran live in Beverly Hills, Westwood etc as valued American residents and citizens. I must point out that Iran is not Iraq or Afghanistan, it is Ancient Persia.
Before you read on though, as this is an entertainment and celebrity news blog, click on this case of Gibbston Wine grown and cellared in Queenstown New Zealand that Beyonce was seen sipping on at lunch this weekend in Auckland The Supercity. Apparently the wine is a beauty. Alright, news continues:
According to Bloomberg, the White House fears Diplomacy has been compromised with the Wikileaks distributed secret information of speical documents gleaned from cables, to the world’s press for upcoming publication. Specifically Bloomberg reports:
“Nevertheless, these cables could compromise private discussions with foreign governments and opposition leaders,” according to the statement from the White House Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs. “When the substance of private conversations is printed on the front pages of newspapers across the world, it can deeply impact not only U.S. foreign policy interests, but those of our allies and friends.”
Republicans also condemned the release of the cables, with Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina stating on Fox News Sunday that “the people at WikiLeaks could have blood on their hands.” The top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida, called the revelation of the documents “extremely irresponsible.”
The Pentagon’s Response to the leaks that escaped their management is: “The Pentagon announced today that it will take a “series of actions” to prevent future reoccurrences, such as developing procedures to monitor user behavior that is similar to steps taken by credit-card companies to detect fraud. The military will also conduct security oversight inspections at forward bases and remove the ability of classified computers to download information onto removable disks.”
Perhaps you’ll appreciate this case of wine then as a reading companion in the upcoming weeks as you follow the Wikileaks Docs, news stories about to hit the world via Spain, France, Germany, New York, The UK in the next few weeks.

LA Weekly is going all out to represent themselves as more than a community newspaper. Their Coupons reflect war time eras of the past.
It’s the big draw of the paper each week for many Angelenos, struggling to make rent, in an employer’s market. Rents haven’t been reduced and pay rises aren’t forthcoming, so the coupons bridge this blind spot in society at the moment.
A sign of the times. I love the fun Sherlock Holmes goes to Silverlake, take on marketing this useful gimmick. Very L.A.

Two pictures: One – Angelina Jolie‘s billboard for her new Johnny Depp film, The Tourist -photographed 30 yards from home here in West Hollywood, California.
Two – A plastic surgeon’s advertisement LA Weekly today.
Conclusion – When you’re Angelina Jolie, America wants every part of you to mimic as a celebrity. They’ll lift it off you, with or without your consent. Unreal. Vultures with scalpels to make bank. Nasty greedy-gutted capitalist creatures. Jokes.
Seriously, this advertisement is plain scary. Firstly, convincing a young girl to get ahead by going under the scalpel to look like Jolie. And secondly, actually doing that as a surgeon. Promoting it even. I know Hitler is long since dead and this is not Nazi Germany, this is Hollywood, but what is this advertisement saying about society in general?
Sheepers creepers! Is this taking ‘art’ and pop culture a little bit too far? America’s natural diversity is at threat. We can’t have everyone looking like a young Zsa Zsa and Eva Gabor or Jolie either. Respect for one’s parent’s genes is needed, I reckon! :)

In 1942 during WWII a key weapon of America’s foes was to send fire missiles into US forrests. The fires would deplete manpower and resources. With many men at war, a campaign to educate Americans on how to fight and be mindful of fires began. In the 1942 fires, a teacher Elsie Mitchell who was five months pregnant, along with five students discovered a fire bomb dropped in a forest, the bomb exploded killing them all.
Smokey The Bear was used to recruit many young people to become junior firefighters. As a brand he is recognized by 95% of all US adults and 77% of children.
According to Richard Earle, author of The Art of Cause Marketing, the Smokey Bear campaign is recognized as among the most powerful and enduring of all public service advertising. “Smokey is simple, strong, straightforward,” Earle writes. “He’s a denizen of those woods you’re visiting, and he cares about preserving them. Anyone who grew up watching Bambi realizes how terrifying a forest fire can be. But Smokey wouldn’t run away. Smokey’s strong. He’ll stay and fight the fire if necessary, but he’d rather have you douse it and cover it up so he doesn’t have to.”
Bambi (the film) by Walt Disney was created to reveal the devastation of fire. After a year, Bambi’s image was withdrawn from the firefighting campaign by Walt, therefore a new Mascot was needed to head the fire fighting awareness campaign. As the animal theme was a good one, a bear was chosen and Smokey The Bear became a character in that moment.
The two key messages of Smokey are: “Smokey Says – Care Will Prevent 9 out of 10 Forest Fires” and “Remember only YOU – can prevent fo-rest fires.” The slogan became updated to “wildfires” later, to take into account grass-fires too.
Smokey The Bears trademark hat derives from cavalry of the US National Parks Service who wore the hat, also worn by military and police personel today. It is officially called a ‘campaign hat’ and is shared historically by New Zealand military (Wellington issue), the Canadian Royal Mounties, the early Black Buffalo Soldiers of America and is made by Stetson. The same company also make the Stetson cowboy hat, not a campaign hat. 1905 is when the hat first appeared. Smokey got his in 1944, wearing denim jeans in his first campaign poster while pouring a bucket of water on a campfire. A variation of ‘Smokey’s’ hat is also the slouch hat worn by Australians. Smokey is always associated with a campaign hat. WWII was when he was created.
As a cartoon Smokey’s voice was given life by: Jackson Weaver (a Washington DC, morning drive radio host), Jim Cummings, Roger C Carmel and more lately Sam Elliott. Radio station KNX’s George Walsh also voiced Smokey.
In 1950, a real life black bear cub who to avoid a fire at Lincoln National Park (New Mexico); was found in the heat of a wildfire by Texas fire rangers to be up a tree, frightened with burned paws. His first name was Hotfoot Teddy. He was renamed Smokey, some say after Smokey Joe Martin, a New York City firefighter who lost his vision and had burned hands in a fire of 1922 during a bold rescue effort.
The Annual “Smokey Awards” are held for firefighters each year: “To recognize outstanding service in the prevention of wildland fires and to increase public recognition and awareness of the need for continuing fire prevention efforts.”
[It's fascinating to me what symbols are created, for what purpose, and how loved they become as texts of culture. Smokey bear is but one of them. 95% of all US adults know his message. That's a powerful creation]

Many of you have been asking for this for months. Here it is. Kat Von D’s LA INK store front sign, also used in the reality TV show. Photographed today.
It’s a good one to stick on your phone. Especially if you don’t have or want a tattoo, but don’t want to appear as a snob to the many people that do.
This shop is an iconic Hollywood landmark now of California. Proof, that it’s amazing what a single sign can do to sell an entire entertainment arts bizzo.

Alrighty, I am still obsessing on the fact that Michael Jackson as a brand to entertain, still rocks on, because his architecture as an entertaining King, has a life force of it’s own–with or without him.
That’s nuts. For a fragile dude, he sure built a solid kingdom of entertainment to model. Look at this stuff fly. It’s the real deal of a King. Dance is celebrated in these images of art and performance. Monarch butterflies and Doves feature too.
These are the symbols that Jackson’s children and Miss Janet Jackson – MJ’s sister, are presenting to his fans and the world.
There is no more successful American who proved they could cross over and appeal to India, like Michael Jackson. He “lived beyond color lines, geographical borders and boundaries” to paraphrase his sister’s Rhythm Nation lyrics.
He was cross-cultural, all people he saw as being the same. As a culture maker, and America’s King of Pop he saw his role as creating symbology for his fans, so that they could have a sense of global culture that resonated with them all.
Seriously though, as New Zealand is the nation that creates Jackson-Taylor Monarchs in 3D in the 2010′s of cinema mastery –we perhaps need a ‘royal cinematic meeting of entertainment minds’ with one of MJ’s kids or his nieces or nephews (we’re not fussy), to star in our Hobbit films, to cement that point. What a cool idea.
Let me play ‘stand in’ Hollywood casting agent on this one… We’ll go for Blanket Jackson thanks, as a Hobbit prince of Latino descent. :)Having seen both Michael and Janet Jackson both perform live in concert in Auckland at Mt Smart Stadium, New Zealand with friend, Trinity Brooke, I think Blanket would rock, following in the footsteps of the family, in a Hobbit film shot in 3D and Middle Earth. Imagine that! A real Jackson Hobbit too. Perfect!
Enjoy these images, from Blanket’s Estates’ one page ad in the LA Times today. A paper that services a city and associated cities of 20 million people.

Progress in politics today can be difficult and is like this tee shirt’s message. [On overload] Thinking. Please wait.
The patience of a saint is needed. Washington is very interesting at this nano-second. In the political circus ring today, we have a first term president up against the ropes in recession’s gloom, and a U.S deficit he inherited, that he’s in charge of addressing. What is a man to do, wearing his Rocky boxing gloves, while he takes the microphone, Wednesday?
This was it: “Singling out House GOP leader John Boehner in his home state, Obama delivered a searing attack on Republicans for advocating “the same philosophy that led to this mess in the first place: cut more taxes for millionaires and cut more rules for corporations.”
My thoughts are split on this one:
a) this will appease the struggling majority of people not wealthy, that a sense of ‘justice’ has come their way, under a new President’s lead. A good message to send a majority in a mid term voting strategy that well–acts as a sweetner to most Americans.
b) On the other hand, everything I’ve observed about the ideological values of American, life and culture in any field, while living in it for almost five years–glorifies the wealthy (as signifiers in a system of American ‘success’). It doesn’t seem fair to me, that the concept of ‘The American Dream’ that is held up as the jewel of democracy (even though it’s straight up rooted in capitalism very openly and without any pretension to this fact) that all in America are constantly encouraged to run after, pursue and strive for as an ideal of the Great American Way… well, why should the very people who got there to the allusive finishing line–then have their medals stripped from them? Or worse, downsized when they ordered the McDonald’s super-sized french fries, happy meal, option in the America, they too were promised? Two wrongs, don’t make a right.
Isn’t that flogging your heroes of the system, who paid for it (ie: how political campaigns ‘work’ and how candidate frontrunners are funded in this country), that all in politics serve, if we’re honest?
Banner. For Yahweh-Nissi types, towards Hokhmah, Binah, Daat (Wisdom. Understanding. Knowledge) increasing in hearts and minds in Los Angeles City, in order to inform and better express, the nuanced richness and limitless capacity of Love.

Amazon Superpowers Post: Normally, whenever I see American texts of entertainment doing the “superpowers” theme, I tend to want to head over to the Mr Rogers Imaginary Neighborhood at the PBS kids website to refresh my rememberer about all the kinds of motivations for school teachers as to why kids still love superheroes.
Apparently, superheroes can be used as a teaching theme, to help children feel less afraid of things bigger than them. By inventing a superhero, everyone can be less afraid of the ‘real world’ so Mr Rogers once wrote in his very skilled TV production notes. Some still remain on PBS Kids website.
Back in film school, I recall the numerous lectures Margie used to give (she was a marathon runner when not in a lecturn) about how Superheroes are always big trending fabrications of super powers when such empires are at war.
Margie told us (while we were paying her to tell us as our favorite lecturer to read books about Hollywood cinema’s history, than share her favorite picks and quotes with us adult students), that we mythologize what attributes we want in normal citizens by selling a dream through legends construction and creation. Often these legends are of people (real or imaginary) who we feel best represent our visions of ‘world domination’ or ‘empire building’ for example. Sometimes we even imbue them with superpowers too in such strength building narratives. The motivation is generally good–good triumphing over struggle–so why not?!
Not bad. Barbara Streisand is a bit of a local legend in L.A gift stores. This artwork of Babs was snapped tonight in Hollywood. The large painting is on sale at 40% off. That’s just wrong! Look how cute Streisand is in this pic. What a bargain.
For a second, I thought it was Jennifer Aniston. How could I mistake a good Jewish nose, for a good Greek one, like that! Both Helen Guzwell of New Zealand and Emma Norgate (a Jewess) from primary school at Onerahi, would have mollywhooped me upside the head, right proper for that faux pas.
I better go back for a return visit to the Beth Jacob Congregation –the most friendliest and warmest and embracing synagogue in southern-most, East Beverly Hills, to brush up on my Jewish-friendly orientation etiquette, asap–because stuffing up on one’s American pop art, like that–is a sin in this fine patriotic and diverse country.
I repeat, a sin! :)
Needless to say, that when some citizens of West Hollywood are worried about their equal slice of wedding cake in these fickle times, that clearly Rhino moving trucks are not. They’re booming if centre-piece paintings like this are going up on sale. Just saying!

[Pilgrim's Progress 2010 from my place]
I promised earlier today, that I would post the pic of the Scott Pilgrim film’s billboard that I can spot from my place in Hollywood.
Being positioned in a rather quircke creative and fashionable, yet literary, medical family in L.A, I guess I’ve gotta get my freak on–and entertain American-Maori styles. Because to do anything less, is not how we roll. We’re creative and we entertain.
So, here’s that billboard with the extra edition of Kiwi-Maori lad Karl Urban of Star Trek fame for your entertainment. There’s nothing Coy or McDonalds about Karl. He’s the man.
The point of this post?
Never lose your beaming smile when you enter a room full of strangers. Just know, they need what you know, so always beam a smile… if you want to.

Eminem’s expression in this pic says it all on a “burning generation” and wasted youthful potential.”
“Oh No They Didn’t? Aha! Yes they did!”
This is America’s youth’s dilemma today at the lies of past politicians and economists.
In such times, always think green, while our beds are burning. Here’s Australia’s Midnight Oil with a live performance (again) as a good commentary for Rihanna and Eminem’s strong pop message today. Earth romance is hot.
Thought for today: “If we over harvest our future crops in our fields, prune too hard the trees we have in our orchards, or burn our fields of wheat down to the ground–who will provide for our future economy, if we sabotage our own fruit, still to come?”
This issue should be the #1 concern in the world at the moment. Youth should be. Not us. Generation Joseph types need to arise, because clearly, famine is ahead unless we fix this problem of greed and selfishness, concerning America’s youth’s potential today and for the future. Enjoy the music as food for thought. And on that note. Thanks Heavens for George Lucas types, who are leading on the matter.
