FATIMA BHUTTO GIVES A FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF A PAKISTANI FATHER’S POLITICAL LEGACY

“I always wanted to be a writer,” she said. “I used to write short stories, and my father would act as if I’d split the atom.”

The price of politics for some families is staggering.

Fatima Bhutto: Photos (Left: Fatima Bhutto. Credit: Benjamin Loyseau. Right: Fatima writes: “Papa and I in Geneva. He had broken his arm and I insisted on being fitted with a cast too, which I wore until his came off.”)

Reports the LA Times: “The Bhuttos, a South Asian dynasty that has fueled Pakistani politics for decades. They are the subject of Fatima’s Songs of Blood and Sword: A Daughter’s Memoir published this month.

It is a political family that has borne the burden of power: Fatima’s grandfather, founder of the Pakistan People’s Party, was hanged. Her uncle was poisoned in France. Her father Murtaza— a political activist — was gunned down by police. And in December 2007 her aunt Benazir, the first woman to serve as prime minister in an Islamic country, was assassinated by extremists after a campaign rally in Rawalpindi.

The author documents her family’s history in her memoir, which is both violent and romantic and that excavates the small things about their lives. The book is a historical walk through her late father’s life and it’s also a family history, showing how her surname and the country are tied together … how the family has been part of the turbulence of a country conflicted.”

With so many family members slain, this author must have amazing forgiveness capacities. Sounds like a good read.

Quotes: “We are a nuclear armed state,” she laments in her memoir, “that cannot run refrigerators.”

“I still think of it as where I belong. Where I want to be,” she said. “It’s a frightening place though. It’s a place I associate with a lot of love and a lot of fear.” She paraphrases Rumi, saying: “Even though I wander, my compass always points toward home.”

HOLLYWOOD ON PAUL HENRY’S GLASSES AND REMARKS ABOUT GOVERNOR GENERAL, SIR ANAND SATYANAND – 4.10.10

What does a New Zealander look like?

Namaste. Kia Ora. Hello. It’s a pretty overcast day in California. One of the rare days where it is raining. As I blog to you all, from my Hollywood window, mist clouds sit on the Hollywood Hills, wafting half way down The Hills. A picture of austere beauty, cleansing away the busy build up of Cosmopolitan, Los Angeles smog.

You’ll never see that on Keeping Up With The Kardashians or Sister Wives either for that matter (a Washington DC, TV series favorite, fancy that?!), but it is so pretty and reminds me of the mists of the Urewera mountain ranges where the beautiful Maori people of the Tuhoe tribe live. They are people where Maori is their first language in New Zealand. Stunningly cultured, rich, deep, poetic people.

This rather romantic Hollywood view of Tuhoe some of New Zealand’s most noble citizens, is disrupted today when I get online, and discover that Paul Henry, the talk show host of Breakfast (this nation’s version of Good Morning America) made some interesting comments about another New Zealander who wears spectacles too.

John Key (this fine nation of rubgy football champion’s Prime Minister) was a guest on the show.

All was going fine and dandy, until Henry had to open his swarmy gate? and ask the words, “is he even a New Zealander?” concerning Sir Anand Satyanand. Outrageous.

تصفيق

New Zealand Focus: A mayor, Bob Parker, comes to grips with the sickening 5.1 aftershocks of an earthquake’s unpredictable might, in his City of Christchurch. STAR MAGAZINE’S COVER- BRAD PITT STARS AS ‘THE TOURIST,’ IN A TABLOID COVER FOR THE SIX MILES HIGH CLUB

Is Brad Pitt really in the six mile high club with a French hottie, whose not Angelina Jolie? OMG. Cue the: Escandelo/ tabloid-flying/ pomme de frites/ uber-celebrity cheating scandals alert button etc!!! WITH SIRENS! ASAP!!!

Personally, that’s between Brad and his publicist (Angelina doesn’t have one). But airplane allusions of “travel and sexy adventure” are the key messages that draw the imagination into this story at all, I think by this magazine cover from Star Magazine.

In reality, it also seems like the movie marketing team for Johnny Depp and Angelina‘s new film, The Tourist, have begun their ‘work’ via this always humorous and light-hearted tabloids scandals angle approach. In a clever switch out, Brad is now the star of ‘The Tourist’ not Johnny or Angelina.

After you’ve finished laughing at the above scandal, a reminder that Pakistan is on the Jolie-Pitts agenda too, so why not go here to visit the flood victims support page. Imagine your life sustaining food you’ve helped buy, traveling six miles high instead of Brad (and alleged French knock out air stewardess) winging its way; into the lives of 17 million displaced Pakistanis, and think how hot you all are for making that happen.

I mean, really!!! You’re a globetrotting magician. You should be on this cheeky cover, with aviator propellers swirling behind you for giving to Pakistan today, not just Brad. You know it! Cheers all. :)

The king named her Queen Noor al-Hussein, " the light of Hussein." The fairy-tale romance endured for more than two decades, until the king's death in 1999.]

ANGELINA JOLIE SHEDS LIGHT ON PAKISTAN

“I am very moved by them and I hope that I am able to, today and tomorrow, be able to do something to help bring attention to the situation for all of the people in need in Pakistan,” Jolie told reporters after visiting a refugee camp in the Jalozai area,” says Angelina Jolie visiting Pakistan for the UN.

A long black robe and a black headscarf adorned with a thin red stripe was what Jolie wore when on her official tour – the kind of conservative clothing worn by many Muslim women in Pakistan.

The United Nations issued an appeal for $460 million in emergency funds on Aug. 11, but only $294 million, or 64 percent, has been received so far for the 17 million who need help to survive.

“We need more … well-known figures who can keep the spotlight and focus because people tend to forget internationally,” said Ajay Chhibber, who is also the U.N. development agency’s regional director for Asia. Gosh, Mr Chhibber sounds a little like any Hollywood club owner, but of course, for a much better cause.

Jolie is an American national treasure of the world helping Mr CChibber and UN Team in their appeal efforts. Look at her go. She makes America look so pretty, not matter what she wears or where she appears. To help the UN, check them out, right here

PAKISTAN FLOOD VICTIMS ARE BEING VERY PATIENT

Patience is a virtue, especially in times of duress. This is Pakistan’s story today. Reports Merril D Oliver, “[Pakistan] news is unrelenting — and almost unrelentingly bad. After scathing criticism that they were unprepared for the disaster and inept in their initial response, Carlotta Gall reported, government officials, ministers and even President Asif Ali Zardari are crisscrossing flood-affected areas of the country in a frantic effort to ease public anger and despair. Pakistani officials, diplomats and aid workers warn that while civil unrest has so far been averted, the aftermath of the worst-ever flooding in Pakistan could destabilize the country in the months to come and aggravate the already deep regional, sectarian and class fissures.”

Nice to see patience in operation by people who have experienced huge losses due to natural disaster claiming life and a nation’s prior way of being as they once knew it.
