Serena Williams favorite title for a film, came in at #1 this weekend. I kid.
As predicted on horiwood.com, Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself movie, starring Perry, Mary J Blige and Oscar nominee Taraji P Hensen, came in at #1 in the US box office movie takings this weekend, 3rd weekend September, 2009
Second was New Moon for presales of tickets. Wow! The real, current second though was Tim Burton’s CGI flick 9, which took in almost $11 million.
Congratulations Tyler Perry. Films about hardship and overcoming struggle have more worth than CGI, big effects films that could perhaps lack a bit of soul.
People matter! Not just expensive things. Go Tyler Perry.
Has this man, not got the box office #1 midas touch with all of his films, or what? Tyler Perry is incredible!
The Whale Rider is a book and a film, that moved audiences worldwide as a thirteen year old girl Pai, fights against traditional gender restraints to be the leader that she was destined to be. The role garnered, first time actress, Keisha Castle-Hughes, then 13, her first Oscar nomination here in Hollywood.
I learnt, Saturday, that the author of The Whale Rider, Witi Ihimaera, recently turned down a Knighthood and the opportunity to become Sir Witi Ihimaera, on the grounds that he did not want to diminish the effect of “Colonial oppression” on his indigenous Maori People of New Zealand by accepting the Knighthood. This was his personal choice.
I was trained by Witi Ihimaera at Auckland University. He writes stories that move oppressed people, regardless of race, age, gender or sexuality into a better place. He is the feel good writer to read when you want to: cry one chapter and laugh the next. The Whale Rider being proof of that. Not many authors can move you to laughter and tears throughout a book like Mr Ihimaera can. So I take my Hollywood cap off to him today, for his great storytelling ability in literature and film.
Hollywood needs more stories of the calibre of Ta Witi Ihimaera.
Another book of Witi Ihimaera’s that is a brilliant read is: “The Uncle’s Story.” It goes a little like this: “Armed with his uncle’s diary, Michael Mahana goes searching for the truth, about the secret the Mahana family has kept hidden for over thirty years, and what happened to uncle Sam.
Set in the war-torn jungles of Vietnam and in present day New Zealand and North America, Witi Ihimaera’s dramatic novel combines the superb story telling for which he is so renowned with the unflinching realism that made ‘The Whale Rider’ a literary and cinematic success. A powerful love story bravely told, it courageously confronts Maori attitudes to sexuality and masculinity and contains some of Ihimaera’s most passionate writing to date.”
Having been in Mr Ihimaera’s creative writing class in The English Department studying New Zealand Literature at The University of Auckland, the year Ihimaera was writing the Uncle’s Story, I know that the Sam in this novel, was unexpectedly named after me.
The Cliff in the novel, was named after Maori Hollywood actor, Cliff Curtis (pictured above). It’s weird that I now live in Hollywood. So…..
And, to everyone who wants a good read, you won’t want to miss reading this book. Go here to order it on Amazon. You will both laugh and have your heart torn out at the end. How Twilight Saga-ish in that Whale Rider kind of way!
With any luck, you can also read it on a kindle. But this comes with a Kindle Warning: You’ll need tissues to wipe your tears of laughter off the screen though.
The search for all things Julia Child has begun the world over. Child’s late culinary masterpiece, Mastering The Art of French Cooking has been a best seller in the world this week.
Not only did the home chef, home entertainer and culinary arts masterful author top book sales on Amazon.com, she also whipped up book sales fluffier than her pommes j’adore at Barnes&Noble.com.
Child’s book is priced at US$40 and it sold out on Amazon.Com, Monday, after Meryle Streep’s Julia & Julie movie opened at the box office to a #2 spot.
75,000 more copies have gone to print tonight.
Now that’s one amazing chef! People who are passionate about what they do, like Julia Child was about food and feeding the people that she cared about with home cooked love, are the best souls in the world.
The world has not forgotten Julia Child. Though a tad bit eccentric, what a true culinary American legend.
She even did the French proud this week too! Now this is the way to whisk up a French Omelette in a jiffy.
Despite what Perez Hilton’s Mario Lavandeira falsely claimed for two weeks on his blog, that GI Joe: Return of The Cobra would fail miserably at the box, it (unsurprisingly) did not. What does Mario know? Nada.
Congrats to Channing Tatum for having the #1 movie in America at the box office over the weekend, taking over $54 million in movie ticket sales domestically in the US of A.
Also congratulations to the movie’s producers who opted not to have the customary Hollywood movie critic early screening reviews session, and who atypically led with confidence, just opening the movie to the US public without journalists ‘help.’
It worked. #1.
Is this a new trend for blockbuster films for the future?
Journalists could well learn to be a tad bit sweeter, if they even have hopes to be the privileged few and review a movie first. It’s a wake up call to all film reviewers, that the American people decide with or without journalists ‘expert’ opinion on films.
A journalist has never made a film, so why they get to critique it has always been a mystery to me. I think newspapers and entertainment critics should be guest filmmakers, guest screenwriters and guest reporters commenting on their peers films rather than a journalist.
The Rise of the Cobra’s #1 success at the box office, could perhaps be an indication that the days of the film critic are numbered. I hope not, but just sayin!
While Mariah Carey, Lil Wayne and Diddy’s new album release dates have been pushed back, Clive Davis is moving Whitney Houston’s I Look To You, comeback album forward by a day. Nice work Whitney Houston! She’s on a comeback roll!
For what she’s gifted the world in music, we love this woman! Here’s 10 Hot Posts Right Now on Horiwood.Com. Enjoy!
You’ve got to give it to Lauren Conrad. She’s one reality star, who knows how to switch it on up into new things.
Not only was her book, LA Candy, loosely based on her life, a #1 New York Times Best Seller, but Conrad is in talks to turn her book into a film. Nice.
“We’re hoping for a movie deal,” says Conrad to The New York Daily News. “I’m working on [adapting the book for the movies] right now, but I don’t want to commit to anything until I see all my options. We have had a lot of exciting news in that respect, though.”
It’s nice to see a young star, who doesn’t want fame’s spotlight, just for being famous. She’s creating entertainment product and is becoming (as a writer,) an architect of Hollywood.
Lauren Conrad is one smart sweetheart! Smart LA Candy, for sure! Would you see LA Candy at the movies, if Lauren’s hit book gets greenlit for the big screen?

On the set of her new film, The Last Kiss, Miley Cyrus got cosy with Aussie lad, Liam Helmworth.
This is sounding like a remake of the film Grease, with a role reversal of John Travolta and Olivia Newton John’s roles.
Having Travolta’s wife, Kelly Preston onboard, as Miley’s onscreen mom, certainly makes The Last Kiss appear that way.

HOLLYWOOD HOPES THAT TRANSFORMERS 2 + HARRY POTTER WILL EQUAL THE DARK KNIGHT BOX OFFICE REVENUES OF LAST SUMMER
The box office is the lifeblood of Hollywood.
Already, California is facing a whopping deficit in its state budget. Box Office revenue is even more critical for California this year than perhaps any other since the 1930s.
Last year, for the entertainment industry of Hollywood, The Dark Knight’s worldwide $1 billion plus success was a God send to this industry town in the summer of 2008.
Pundits this summer, put faith in Transformers 2: Revenge of The Fallen and Harry Potter, to jointly make up the revenue this year for the box office.
Can Megan Fox and Shia LaBouef and Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson’s films do that for Hollywood. The figures say “yes” that it is possible.
Transformers 1 did $319 million domestically in summer 2007. Harry Potter films typically come in near $300 million. Together, they could draw a combined $600 million infusion Hollywood this summer.
A lot is resting on Megan Fox’s pretty shoulders. But Hollywood knows how to pick their winners. It’s the history of this show biz town. Megan Fox is one. Go girl!
