A BEN LUMMIS CHRISTMAS – THEY CAN’T TAKE THAT AWAY – HOLLYWOOD 2010
Christmas is about possessing a spirit of compassion–to give away richly. Got spirit?
It’s Christmas time in the City of Angels, California USA. I’m so excited I’m here for that. It’s a Christmas miracle that I am (long story!).
The moment I most associate with a Christmas feeling in the Entertainment Capitol of the World this year is perhaps Ben Lummis singing They Can’t Take That Away live in 2006. Lummis has vocal quality few American male stars that have been manufactured in the last five years show. He’s the real deal singing star. He’s more like Usher in terms of true vocal quality as a live performer than someone like T-Pain for example.
Ben’s winning performance of when he got discovered is a Hollywood-worthy moment to me as it reflects how trends created in California can and do cross cultures, effortlessly across the world too, (more…)
KIERAN READ IS NEW ZEALAND’S no.1 RUGBY FOOTBALL SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR 2010
When it comes down to sporting gladiators, you always look at a rugby football field to discover the true essence of sportspersonship; that being” skill, athleticism, fitness, tenacity, courage, creative play, stamina, making it count on the score board and in the case of rugby football–that no.1 trait TEAMWORK. Together Everyone Achieves More.
Here’s a bit of exciting news with all of those features on display with the news that Kieran Read, 25, has been listed as New Zealand’s top rugby football player this year.
The New Zealand Herald reports: ‘Barnstorming No 8 Kieran Read picked up the Kel Tremain Memorial Trophy for player of the year at the New Zealand Rugby Awards. The 25-year-old was outstanding for the All Blacks as they went through the June internationals and Tri-Nations unbeaten, before playing a prominent role in the Grand Slam. The only blight on his season was the knee ligament damage that forced him from the field early in the year’s final test against Wales. Read has been earmarked as a future All Black captain and last night he edged the incumbent skipper and 50-test lock Brad Thorn for the big prize.’
The Black Ferns, (Kiwis womens rugby football team) scored big for the Team of the Year trophy.
MSN news adds: ‘The New Zealand Rugby Union described Read as “a rock at the back of the scrum” for the All Blacks and his Super 14 team, the Canberbury Crusaders. Reid received the award at a function in Auckland on Thursday night, when Auckland Blues halfback Alby Mathewson was named Super 14 player of the year.’
Congrats to all winners. Especially Kieran Read who plays in the no.8 position. His name is that of a sixth century saint and it means “black” and is of Irish and Gaelic origin. How apt to be in the running as a future captain of the All Blacks team of NZ then. Destiny shines.

JEWS BEING BADLY BEHAVED IN HOLLYWOOD 2010
Alright, I’ve just published the Simon Wiesenthal Center‘s list for 2010 via The Jewish Journal that lists who has been labelled the Ten Most Anti-Semitic people for 2010. Go here to read that very upfront and out in the open piece of literature. Shocking!
The list was prefaced by Rabbi Marvin Hier stating: “Never before, in recent memory, has the Simon Wiesenthal Center seen such a proliferation of anti-Semitism going mainstream,” said Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder and dean of the Center adding that “Our list of top ten anti-Semitic slurs runs the gamut of well-known personalities including journalists, government officials, celebrities, a prominent film director, and academics.”
Many of the quotes are classic Jewish conspiracy theories updated to reflect current anxieties, blaming the control of the media and banking sectors on Jews. “Unfortunately, our list shows that anti-Semitic canards normally thought to belong to the lunatic fringe have, in fact, been bought into by major elements of Western society,” Rabbi Hier concluded.”
As we live in a mature cultural world, here are three things that Jews did to me personally when deciding to behave badly this year. I post these on Horiwood.Com as an open sign of fairness and maturity in America–denoting how Jewish people like everyone else need to grow up too in love concerning people who are not Jewish. Let’s put this under the topic of JEWISH GOSSIP for a laugh:
1. Once I posted a blog post about British supermodel Kate Moss attending a Hope for Charity event in support of innocent Palestinian children caught up in the cross-fire of war in Gaza. This post about Kate supporting innocents in war–somehow got this blog blacklisted on The Anti-Semitic website.
2. This year a Jewish boss who did not get his way with me screamed at me at the top of their lungs: “You are nothing but an Adolph Hilter.” It was not pretty.
3. Something Jewish people have said to me personally in Hollywood at least five times this year, when monetary deals didn’t go their way as they had rather forcefully wanted to: “Why don’t you go back to New Zealand?”
Yep, those comments were hurtful and at the time I would describe their intention as being “to hurt” and framed as being so manipulatively racist too! As I have been accused of being racist on this blog many times in the past–when I don’t deliberately try to be, I told each of these people who had offended me on the spot why I thought they were racist with such comments to their face and forgave them instantly too. Only way to go!
There’s a lot of work to be done by all people in Hollywood –Jewish people and gentiles alike.
Happy Holidays everyone! Let’s keep growing, loving, forgiving, extending courtesy and mutual respect across cultures within and outside of Jewish communities all year round and everyday. Especially, here in America. Despite these minor hiccups with some members of the Jewish community, (no community is perfect) I remain Pro-Jewish as a global citizen of the world, the way I was raised to be by Kiwi parents who are Pro-Jewish too.
It’s flattering that Jewish people feel comfortable and safe in my presence to be badly behaved. After all, that’s what friends are for. :)

JOHN KEY SINGS: SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO — LONDON AND HAWAII
New Zealand’s Prime Minister appeared on The Edge radio station to warble a Christmas ditty before he jets out with family for the holiday season. Topics of conversation were: What to get Will & Kate for their wedding present next year, a niece’s wedding in London and enjoying mohitos and corn-fed beef in Hawaii where The Keys plans to vacation this year.
Go here to see the flattest rendition of this song in any Kiwi pub’s history, but hey, 200% effort for leaping in and being a sport. What a hoot. Happy Holidays New Zealand. :)

BLEEDING HEARTS KIWI COMMENT – LISA LAVIE AND ALEXANDER DOWNER CAN SUCK IT!
One leaked wikileaks cable shows former Australian foreign minister Alexander Downer thought New Zealand was a nation of “bleeding hearts“.
How rude.
Here’s Canada’s one and only, Lisa Lavie singing up a storm with Leona Lewis’ song of the UK then –in celebration of Kiwi’s being transparent enough to wear our big hearts on our sleeves, and unabashedly bleed Kiwi love.

HEKIA PARATA’S APPOINTMENT AS A CABINET MINISTER OF NEW ZEALAND PARLIAMENT IS CELEBRATED IN HOLLYWOOD – 12.6.10
[Blue Balloons as photographed by MP Katrina Shanks/Michael Woodhouse Media Group]
Hollywood California USA (Monday 6th December 2010)–A toast was raised in Hollywood today at West Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont at the announcement that Hekia Parata has been promoted as a Cabinet Minister of New Zealand.
Ms. Parata becomes Ethnic Affair’s and Women’s Affairs Minister. She also picks up associate minister roles for Accident Compensation Commission, Energy and Resources and for The Community and Voluntary Sector. The latter is a new role and was requested by Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Tariana Turia, who said she did not need an associate for disability issues any more.
Prime Minister of New Zealand, last sighted wearing a Muhammad Ali boxing silky robe in a charity auction for burns sufferers, Mr John Key, announced Ms Parata’s appointment at a post Cabinet press conference today, saying he believed she was the most deserving of the position.
“When it comes to Hekia, I think she’s extraordinarily talented,” he said.
At the news Hekia Parata said, “All New Zealanders understand these have been challenging times both domestically, and internationally. The National-led Government continues to face up to those challenges on behalf of all Kiwis. I look forward to doing my part to help all our communities realise the dream of a brighter future.”
“I look forward to getting my feet under the desk and learning all I can about the portfolios the Prime Minister has entrusted me with. I’m excited about the prospect of serving the public of New Zealand in a Ministerial role and the new challenges this will bring.”
Hollywood Maori-Kiwi blogger Sam Cruickshank met with Hollywood friends to toast one glass of Veuve Clicquot in honor of Ms. Parata’s very timely appointment on the global stage of politics. Her leadership will be very welcomed in California, where Maori-Kiwi filmmakers of Ms. Parata’s tribe of Ngati Porou have presented films to the world that have been Oscar nominated twice in Los Angeles cinematic history and body of work to date.
Hekia’s skills in diplomacy are an asset to New Zealand’s growth potential that are key to growing the New Zealand economy in win-win diplomatic partnerships of the future. In particular Parata’s destiny to lead the charge on many human rights issues affecting women on a global stage is something to watch as her international political career unfolds along with her New Zealand cabinet portfolios.
Her capacity of heart is similar to an advocate of oppressed peoples of the world, on the scale of an Angelina Jolie, if Ms. Parata is allowed to and also funded to by the New Zealand people to express that from New Zealand for the world.
Her gifts of noho-puku (EQ) instinctual intelligence and their full and free expression to be vibrant and creative make Ms. Parata exceptionally talented and exciting as a political leader serving New Zealand and The World with her gifts.
She’s known in Hollywood as a global star of politics already.

JOHN KEY STINGS LIKE A MANUKA KING WITH A MUHAMMAD ALI PHOTO SHOOT FOR BURNS SUFFERERS
“I think I look quite good actually,” John Key the well humored Prime Minister of New Zealand reportedly remarked, after modeling an original silk boxing robe signed by American legend of sports and civil rights, Muhammad Ali, purchased by Honey New Zealand for $9,500–provided a photo could be taken of John wearing it.
The son of George Key, Mr Key was raising money for burns sufferers at a Mad Butcher and Suburban Newspapers Community Trust dinner on Friday to raise funds for the National Burn Centre.
Trust chairman Sir Peter Leitch, was delighted with the $219,000 raised. “This is going to allow the centre to get some equipment that is going to make a huge difference to burns sufferers,” he said. Fairfax Media’s Operation Heal text donations was also on the go and other fundraising efforts, and donations from Sunday Star-Times readers helped too.
Sir Peter and Lady Leitch had kicked off the campaign with a $10,000 donation, which was matched by the Hugh Green Foundation and later by the Sir William and Lady Lois Manchester Trust. Nice. Mike Morton, The Mad Butcher’s current owner was present, along with Kerre Woodham who played funny girl MC. Two morning teas with the PM sold at $20k a piece and a pink salmon neck tie he wore to the event for a laugh went for $7k. That’s a fair bit of celebrity heat being generated right there in New Zealand. Good to see.
In Hollywood here’s a manuka honeybee Ali pop cultural tribute to America-New Zealand relations as well as George Burns Hollywood star, Walk of Fame–in the spirit of the PM’s sense of humor and Kiwis generosity of spirit towards others.
Peace.
This story also featured in The Manawatu Standard. Manawatu means “stout hearted” or “to stand tall in heart” in the Maori language of New Zealand. It’s a little bit Mel Gibson Australian-American ‘naughty’ but via Scotland and Hollywood Oscar winning, like the movie Braveheart too. If you’re reading that in Hollywood and are upset that I just wrote Mel Gibson‘s name, grow up, there are no perfect people–just people learning to be better people. In this picture we have a Jewish-Kiwi King wearing an African-American muslim’s champion boxer robe of Ali–whose religious convictions prevented him from fighting at war and who doubled as a civil rights champion in the same manner Nelson Mandela has in the world today also. African-Americans aren’t offended New Zealand’s PM is wearing Ali’s robe and auctioning it off for burns victims. Um, except the one question–how exactly did Mr Key get Ali’s robe? Oops. That’s hysterical.

MAORI YOUNG PEOPLE SHINE AT MAWHERA MINERS COMMEMORATIVE CEREMONY, NEW ZEALAND
A celebrity is someone whose life is worthy of being celebrated–new culture’s kaupapa (or principle).
In the bonds of love we meet–New Zealand’s national anthem
Love is healing and recovering honestly and openly together, acknowledging life, loss, past present and future in community together. Grieving the ugly and celebrating the beauty of what each life gifts community is growing up in love too as a nation–watch this clip.
Greymouth Miners Remembrance Ceremony Footage is supplied by Te Karere Maori News reporting live from Mawhera, Te Wai Pounamu, Aoteroa New Zealand. This news footage denotes the magnitude felt by community across the board in this coast township.
I like the interview which shows variation in Maori dialectical variations of New Zealand’s indigenous peoples own unique diversity between Irena Smith and Kathleen of Mawhera. We call it Nga Mita o Te Reo (dialects). The interview shares the story of grief’s depths. My favorite part of the footage is the young people of Mawhera singing in Maori to lift the spirits of the grieving. Maori young people are so special. Such good kids, putting aside their own grief for friends and family to find the strength and grace to encourage others. They are descendants of people who have been doing this in Mawhera for many centuries.
As a Kiwi who lives in Hollywood I find all the words in English equally as important and moving as the words in Te Reo Rangatira (the language of Chiefs). Enjoy this very special view–a cultural treasure of New Zealand as new culture grows and develops alongside these Maori young people’s development that the nation of New Zealand speaks of in the copy below. Powerful stuff. Mawhera young people are Hollywood stars today on this blog, just because they are. Alright–we need to upgrade these kids with funding to get some swanky new cultural uniforms for performing on such global occasions I think and make them a little bit of a priority. A fine effort from these young leaders.
The following news coverage story is via English NTDTV: Memorial services were held in Greymouth, New Zealand, for the 29 miners who perished in an accident at the Pike River coal mine last month. A two-minute moment of silence was observed, and local school children sang songs of remembrance. (more…)
THE HORIWOOD TOP TEN – MON 11.29.10
It is the second time Brad Pitt has seen Megamind. This time Mr Pitt is pictured with Angelina seeing the film again in Paris, France.
Wikileaks US leaked docs news dominates our top ten celebrity, entertainment news posts here in Hollywood. A shock, because this is not a political blog but an entertainment celebrity blog. I guess world leaders are celebrities right now then, if they’re rating above known celeb names. A good sign.
Here’s John Key‘s quote on the 1600 documents that relate to New Zealand, 1400 hundred of them stemming from Wellington: ”My understanding is it’s more likely to be the odd sort of comment which is colourful in nature, the sort of thing that you might say to your mate around the coffee table but not necessarily something you’d want written down and read by the person that you were reporting on—I see biodocuments (documents about people) or I see reports that come in from our embassies and high commissions around the world. They always have a degree of colour or [creative] licence about them. I take them with a grain of salt. Generally the positions we hold we make them public anyway.”
Good advice on how Wikileaks docs should be read. Just like most things written on this blog really. On that note, our top ten voted worldwide today are:
1. Pic: Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson vacation in Capri
2. Saudi Arabia and Arab leaders side with Israel’s view of Iran
3. Olivia Wilde does all the stuff Megan Fox won’t do
4. Jay-Z and Beyonce have late lunch in New Zealand
5. Wikileaks: Saudi gives President Obama “glowing” review like John Key will get
6. Kate Middleton’s comparisons to Princess Dianna are prevalent
7. Zahara Jolie-Pitt has the Naomi Campbell pouts down pat already
8. Kim Kardashian covers W Magazine
9. Art: Kanye West & Lady Gaga
10. TIE A: Is there ‘lost trust’ in the USA over the wikileaks docs scandal?
10. TIE B: Jay-Z’s tribute to lost Greymouth Miners
“No one is under any illusions about how we feel about the Fiji administration at the moment or what’s happening in Afghanistan so I’d be surprised if there’s anything there”–JK for NZ.
TVNZ reporting via NZPA on NZ’s Position about the US criticism in the Wikileaks Doc: ‘After revelations via Wikileaks that diplomats were told to spy on United Nations figures, the US is accountable, NZ’s leader says.
‘Among the documents released was a classified directive to US diplomats sent on behalf of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in July 2009 which sought intelligence on the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the ambassadors of the other permanent members of the UN Security Council – Britain, China, Russia and France.
The “new national human intelligence collection directive” was sent to US representatives at the UN missions in New York, Vienna and Rome, and 33 embassies and consulates. The UN has reacted saying it will take up concerns with the US and that its operations under the 1946 convention on the privileges and immunities of the United Nations included immunity from search or interference by member governments.
Key did not criticise the US when asked about the controversy this afternoon.

WIKILEAKS SCANDAL AND THE GOOD LESSONS BEING LEARNED
Laughter as a unifying bond: “laughing at ourselves in shared openness,
disarms tensions and the bombs of strife and war”
A defining moment in global politics. The good, the bad, the ugly & the principle of all laughing together for things to get better: The Wikileaks leaked US docs scandal has got many nations worried what the tide of American opinion on world leader’s performances will be like in the oncoming weeks. It’s sort of like having your school report card read out to your entire high school (ie: The World). Who can’t empathize with anyone in politics right now–at this moment? That’s an uncomfortable feeling–for people who are used to being protected, rewarded for giving away very little information (eg: the art of Elena Kagan being interviewed provides a good study on that) to suddenly be forced to be more open by these leaked docs. Shocking, really for the rather closely guarded cushioned world of global politics.
With wikileaks leaking American docs–this news story is first scripted as an American-driven political narrative. Meaning, it’s a very US-shaped form of ‘perception shaping,’ ‘rating,’ ‘ranking,’ ‘sorting,’ ‘reordering a world order,’ ‘categorizing,’ ‘stereotyping?’ and ‘spicing up the game’ or world politics–all not on purpose, by the American government of course. Darn leaked documents being the cause of it all! Wikileaks just can’t be trusted!
$3.5 MILLION HAS BEEN RAISED VIA THE PIKE RIVER RELIEF FUND TRUST THAT WILL BE AUSTRALIA MANAGED
A quote via Tony Kokshoorn, Mayor of Greymouth, where 29 New Zealand, South African, Scottish and one American born miner lost their lives in coal mine blasts that devastated a nation with this coal mining tragedy. The quotes are:
“It can only be described as humbling. There have been some special messages accompanying the donations, which have been made available for the families’ viewing,” Mr Kokshoorn said.
Tony was referring to the $3.5 million donations that have been given via businesses and personal donations to The Pike River Relief Fund for: “the trust that would give financial support to those who suffer financial hardship as a direct result of the tragedy, and the nature of this support would become more apparent as time progresses.”
Ironically, The National Bank (an Australian owned bank that’s the largest banking system in New Zealand, that also services parts of India) is not manning the trust. Instead Westpac Bank is, a bank that is also Australian owned. In fact all of New Zealand’s banking services, bar Kiwibank Ltd are Australian owned–Australian banks charging interest and bank services fees on all aspects of New Zealander’s productivity. It’s strange thinking we have Australian wasps (banks) mining a portion of most Kiwi’s labor and honey. That’s a daily form of very heavy Australian tax being imposed on Kiwis–with very little questioning into that fact. Yet in New Zealand, we do have this system in place. Confidence in one’s own money management is needed perhaps? Or do we just not care? :)
I like Julia Gillard, Australia’s new Prime Minister elect. She’s quite a doll, stemming from good Welsh coal mining people–but New Zealand is not Australia’s paradise green PR Shop. Aotearoa-New Zealand has much deeper roots than this. Yet the appearance of a few things in New Zealand, belies this fact. This trust management being but one example of what I mean, where power (in the form of relief) seems to be directed to flow from.
Perhaps Kiwibank should be managing this fund though–that seems the right Kiwi thing to do for Kiwi families in Kiwi community. Now there’s a new thought. Especially after all of that “New Zealand is Independent” entertainment news that was heard around the world recently. Just saying!
Good stuff though. Compassion in grief-time is the way forward, not only for Greymouth and these families but The World at this time. Love this story.
Irish Central also pays tribute to the miners’ families with news coverage of U2′s live tribute in concert to the lost miners, while performing in Auckland City, over the weekend. Go here to read some Irish News if you like.

SAM BELLINGHAM, BEYONCE, BONO, MAORI MOMS AND U2 IN AUCKLAND THE SUPERCITY, NEW ZEALAND
[Image caption - Fan Sam Bellingham was lucky enough to get a photo with Beyonce as she arrived at Auckland International Airport, New Zealand].
My Maori mum, Tui of Helensville is too cute. Right on midnight (Los Angeles Time) she called me to say that she had gone with her grandchildren to see Bono (she meant U2) perform in Auckland The Supercity.
She also said that Beyonce was spotted going for lunch the next day at The Soul Cafe in Auckland City. “She’s beautiful dear,” were mom’s words.
Maori moms are so much fun. Mine is in her 70′s and can still rock it out to a humanitarian’s rock concert with her grandkids. Namely, her blackest grandchild Bradley James. Love her!
On the phone we talked about what she feels the world needs today. For once I listened. She spoke of people needing a true sense of manaaki (or hospitality from one’s spirit) that this would warm and brighten the world and make it a better place.
She was deep as well as funny as Maori and all Kiwi moms usually are. I felt her manaakitanga over the phone of a woman who has birthed her children in New Zealand, in Tonga in Fiji and travelled to India, China, Israel, America, Australia, the Phillipines as the global people-loving citizen that mom is. From New Zealand, her home–mom’s love of her big-hearted nation in the world beamed bright across New Zealand’s South Pacific Waters to my Maori-Kiwi heart here in California.
Thanks for the fun phone call mom.
And – go Sam Bellingham in New Zealand! You rock. Los Angeles sees your star Kiwi smile too. xox
