JUSTIN BIEBER AND SELENA GOMEZ ARE FRIENDS
Two of the world’s most popular teens this year Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were snapped sharing a laugh in Miami. Along with Miley Cyrus and Taylor Lautner these teens ranked in Google’s top ten names in the world of people most searched for on a search engine in 2010. Bieber and Gomez in the top three.
Both Gomez and Cyrus were spun into stars from Disney perhaps indicating the strength of the Mouse House to generate global stars. Singing teens is a key of the world’s brightest stars today.

MAORI ON GOOGLE BOOKS! – ALREADY I HAVE ISSUES WITH GOOGLE LABS – BOOKS NGRAM VIEWER
[AI suggestion - perhaps NGRAM needs to go back to the chalk board phase]
If I was naive enough to believe Google’s “Books Ngram Viewer” that claims to count words based on 5 million published books and track their trends in terms of amount of times words appear in books (quantitative research), the Maori people of New Zealand would not fare well. The results would have me rehashing that archaic dead-end term, “racism” asap. Maori don’t like doing that in this enlightened age. It does not get people very far, because it immediately casts Maori in the light of having to drive a car fueled by ‘white man’s guilt.’ When you drive on whenua (land) that has tar seal put on it and called a “road,” that would be too much “irony” for a Maori to handle in any given day. Besides, why should we? That’s something that would appeal as a college student. The past is healing.
The tracking tool claims (my search conducted between years 1920 and 2008) that the word “Maori” peaked as a topic of interest in books in the year of 1978 (aprox). Since then it’s plummeted and currently, the usage of the word Maori is as low as its status listed in 1950 findings that’s given in the little graph that pops up. Already, this NGRAM Viewing tool of Google is capable of starting civil wars. I don’t like it much at all so far.
Being scientific, with heart and soul – this means: a) Maori are extinct again – a typical ‘pseudo-scientific’ finding (yawn!) Maori have learned to ignore since being able to read maps – but this time in a literary sense.
Already this supposedly revolutionary tool of technology is spitting out results generating ‘information’ that is rather boring quite frankly in my humble opinion. I say this because such ‘information’ has been so done TO DEATH already! (more…)
THE HORIWOOD TOP TEN – THU 12.16.10
We live in an age where power people are obsessed with owning, quantifying/ qualifying WORDS, their USAGE, their CONTEXT, their HISTORY, their ORIGIN, their FREQUENCY and most of all THEIR MEANING. Why do words scare/ fascinate obsessive people so much?–Horiwood 2010′s.
Have you ever heard of the term culturomics? It posits that technology (a tracking tool developed by Google) can track words of scanned books and work out totals and frequencies of the words used and in what context. That’s amazing – because we have to believe the findings are true. I mean–it’s not like we’re going to manually go through 17,000 books for examples and check are we.
This either makes us extremely ‘trusting in Google’s brand integrity’ or extremely vulnerable and naive to being manipulated by Google as a ‘cultural engineer’ shaping our perceptions of culture past, in books.
Wikileaks taught us perhaps, that we can’t really trust people who manipulate data or information. We just can’t any longer–with no offense to the good people at Google, of course. In general we just live in an age–where data is being manipulated for other means than what we initially think. The global economic crises also taught us this outside of words, regarding numbers, as well.
So which one are we? Gullible or trusting in whatever Google’s new tool claims are ‘definitive’ findings? As always –perhaps ride the middle line, and believe half of what ‘culturomics’ findings tell us. Otherwise it’s a new invented ‘literary religion based on key findings’ with no checks and balances, that cannot be debated either, because it has the appearance of being ‘scientific.’ Culturomics is either going to be really good or really darn scary–there’s no middle ground to it, as it’s completely unaccountable to other technology counter-scanning and collating its findings at this point. Or in other words, it’s not scientific, yet its outcomes posited are claiming to be pure quantitative science. A full press release by Google follows below our top ten results today about it–positioned as a news story.

Jane Seo on Culturomics for The Harvard Crimson writes this Press Release:
“A team of Harvard researchers has created a new tool that analyzes language patterns in published books to quantify cultural and historical trends from 1800 to 2000.
The innovative research tool made its debut yesterday in an article titled “Quantitative Analysis of Culture Using Millions of Digitized Books,” which was published online in the journal Science and launched as a feature on Google.
[The Guardian UK posits Google's word-counting tool fancies Sigmund Freud of many other fine philosophers]
Dubbed “culturomics,” the tool enables the public to use the Google Books database as a “genome of culture,” according to Adrian Veres ’12, one of the article’s authors.

OUR WORLD ACCORDING TO GOOGLE ZIETGEIST MONTAGE HIGHLIGHTS 2010
What a year! Watch the headlines, topics, themes, tragedies, humorous entertainers, unexpected and expected events that wowed us all in 2010 according to Googles top trending topics. Video montages are always tumeke! Watch this one. What a blur. Complete Results Here:
Fastest Rising Top Ten Were:
1. chatroulette. 2. iPad. 3. Justin Bieber. 4. Nicki Minaj. 5. Friv. 6. myxer. 7. Katy Perry. 8. twitter. 9. gamezer. 10. Facebook.
Already I can spot an inconsistency or two with Google Zietgeist results. For example: Justin Bieber is listed in the Fastest Rising Entertainment topics of 2010, whereas Katy isn’t.
Does Google think that Mrs Perry-Brand is not an entertainer? What went on there. *jokes*. Also Facebook should trend higher than twitter on these results but Google can’t quite bring themselves to do that. Never mind! Maybe next year.
Also the words ‘recession’ and ‘economic crises’ are magically not present here. It’s like, come on guys and girls at Google! Who are you fooling with your magic eraser? Hey!

MIRRORED INITIALED OPPOSITE NAMES – 12.6.10
A wise lady once told me–”everything has it’s own opposite.”
Isn’t it strange that at this moment in history when it comes to the initials of peoples names that:
Julian Assange‘s name is the reverse flip out of Angelina Jolie‘s name. And…
Chelsea Handler‘s name is the reverse flip out of Hillary Clinton‘s initials.
It’s about time Angelina and Hillary went for lunch and discussed what’s up–the Yarra river is a nice spot, I believe.
[Jennifer Aniston must be p*ssed Julian Assange has taken her 'flip out' name spot. Google search engine is now churning those consonants, with search engine spiders registering, Jennifer who? Incidentally Daniel Assange's name (son of Julian) also replaces David Arquettes.]
Family stories always win. A wise use of energy and focus invested. After all, nations and the wider world are a family.

SCANNING VICTORIAN CULTURE – VICTORIAN KEY WORDS ARE SCANNED TO BE ANALYZED
To date Google has access to scanned digital information of books: Number of books scanned: fifteen million. Number of pages: five billion. Number of words: over two trillion discovered. [Read these Keynote speech docs ...Keynote Speech docs to discover more]. Word fascination means that Projects like Google Books, the Internet Archive’s OpenLibrary, and HathiTrust are growing.
Knowing how Victorian mindsets tick is an Obsession right now with some American academics. The UK is about to become more transparent in its information sharing of greatest literary minds past: This story fascinates in The New York Times. Photo by Erik Jacobs.
Selected paragraphs penned by Patricia Cohen:
“Victorians were enamored of the new science of statistics, so it seems fitting that these pioneering data hounds are now the subject of an unusual experiment in statistical analysis. The titles of every British book published in English in and around the 19th century — 1,681,161, to be exact — are being electronically scoured for key words and phrases that might offer fresh insight into the minds of the Victorians.”
“Dan Cohen and Fred Gibbs, the two historians of science at George Mason University who have created the project, have so far charted how frequently more than two dozen words — among them “God,” “love,” “work,” “science” and “industrial” — appear in British book titles from the French Revolution in 1789 to the beginning of World War I in 1914.”
As Cohen gave an early presentation of findings to date, “Meredith Martin, an assistant professor of English at Princeton who is studying the history of poetic form, was interested in the terms “prosody,” “meter” and “verse.”“I actually sent him an e-mail as he was talking,” Ms. Martin said. She figured he would be inundated with requests, and “I wanted to be first in line.””

~”I’m gonna stand out here on the mountain top/Till I feel your [Rain]… And now I’ll wait for the light, I’ll wait for the sun/ Till I feel your [Rain]“–Madonna
The 80′s were years of think big, bold, colorful thoughts. You couldn’t help but grow and expand with creativity. Symbols inspiring big thoughts were everywhere. Today Google are celebrating the 80′s by turning google’s logo into the PacMan video game. Fun. Pacman is universally loved as entertainment–as light relief to pass the time, especially in India and China–so that’s a smart move to expand Microsoft’s global audience appeal with this logo. Fun sells.
And as Horiwood.Com is celebrating the life of Aunt Elvira as a Mother of Los Angeles industry and women of business development in The City of Angels revolutionary formative years of American women’s pioneering legends of modern American business, here’s 80′s pop icon, Madonna with her song, Rain.

THE TOP TEN FASTEST RISING NAMES OF ENTERTAINMENT, OUTSIDE OF ASIA 2010?
If you haven’t heard these names good on ya! I don’t know how you found this blog. Anyway, according to Google Zeitgeist’s result’s that have been okay-ed for distribution, these are the top ten fastest rising names of the Entertainment world, outside of Asian nations. A youthful burst of (mainly) American faces. They are:
1. Justin Bieber. 2. Katy Perry. 3. Selena Gomez. 4. Kim Kardashian. 5. Eminem 6. Lady Gaga. 7. Miley Cyrus. 8. Taylor Lautner. 9. Megan Fox. 10. Robert Pattinson.
Other trending names: Shakira, Netflix. Youtube Videos. Ke$ha. Nicki Minaj. Grooveshark. Transformers 3.
All I can say is: There is no Bollywood stars here (a weakness Google needs to improve on to grow market share, still this year) and thank goodness for Robert Pattinson and Shakira, otherwise there would be nobody who wasn’t American in this list other than Bieber.
Come on Google! Be more sharing and reflective.
Zero grade for cross-cultural spirit from an American-owned IT company! You’d think the world was American looking at these results. What a false and deluded bubble that is, to present such a vision to the world. Let’s hope next year Google USA isn’t so insecure. I have a blog, I too know who trends each day.
It’s a pity the Wikileaks scandal didn’t involve the real Google Zeitgiest results. Just saying. This list conveys a vision of ‘cultural imperialism’ that is skewed America’s way. Ideological brainwashing on display, a tad here to be remotely feasible.
I even ask whether Google was censored this year? Unreal. With the exception of Eminem, Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha’s inclusion and Selena Gomez being bumped onto the list at no.3 to reflect the latest US census results proving more Hispanic-American than envisaged–this reads like last year’s list of entertainers. This list feels stale.
