Firefighters go through so much risk on the job. Two firefighters lost their lives in Chicago yesterday when a building collapsed on them when they were fighting fire inside it. Part of the problem is that there’s thousands of vacant buildings in Cook Country, Chicago with no one keeping an eye on them.
Hundreds of people from across the nation – firefighters from New York, New Hampshire and Michigan among them – posted messages of sympathy on a Chicago firefighters’ union Facebook page following the deaths. A separate Facebook memorial page created for Corey Ankum and Edward Stringer had nearly 8,000 supporters Thursday.
Edward Stringer, 47, and Corey Ankum, 34 died in the blaze. Firefighting News reports that their deaths were ironic as one hundred years ago 21 firefighters died December 22nd.
Let’s hope Rahm Emanuel can help fill up Chicago City if he’s successful at Mayoralty for The Windy City.

Shania Twainwho is an occasional resident of Queenstown, New Zealand (pictured below) and who has may-jah fans in Australia writes an email that’s uploaded to her blog for fans.
Seasons greetings to all!
I’ve spent much time over the course of this past year, learning about others who have suffered loss in their lives and taken inspiration from how they’ve managed to overcome it. I’m learning that grief and the suffering of loss, challenges me to be more sensitive and understanding of other’s and also more accepting of my own struggles. Challenge reminds me how important it is to let those who love me, care for me when I need it. The support of others has helped me to move forward less fearful of change, allowing me to embrace the beauty of life today and remain more open to whatever it brings tomorrow.
The people who make my life the most joyful are the ones I am able to lean on because of my own humanness. (more…)

When I first got to Hollywood I really was deluded that I could write PR manuals. Here’s one book of snippets written for a former publicist of America’s biggest music stars that were all somehow connected to Shawn King‘s dad. I used to work in his office each day in lower Beverly Hills doing spin while he appeared on LA’s top Entertainment News Shows or in magazines talking about Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton being rogues that generated tabloid buzz in Young Hollywood on the competive club set.
On my last day working for him, I wrote this book over two nights–to say thanks for all he’d taught me. I did my interpretation of the wisdom he was always reaching for to have as a Russian-Jew descended from a tough holocaust surviving dad. His big thing, was ‘wise paragraphs’ as his favorite thing to read because he was so busy trying to conquer the world of Hollywood–hence these tips I wrote for him that I accidently re-found at My News Digest. The dude had written twenty books and I wanted to give something back to an author.
I love the internet. If you’re a blogger you’ll soon discover that you’ll have so many computers stolen, crash permanently or damaged through getting hacked here in the US, that I didn’t even have a copy of these written words anymore in doc form–but they can be found on the net–a reason why (for right or wrong) you should always have the courage to self-publish electronically.
Mr Publicist Guru, whose books on PR have been translated into 22 languages now–even in Russia and Chinese, used to say to me outrageous requests each day like, “Locate and get me US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright on the phone for me, this minute.” And I would. Nuts!
She was lovely to speak to. So gracious and wise. Here’s snippets from that coffee table book, written for a PR King of LA.
Good PR protects and counsels with thoughtful wisdom
PR TIP # 21: “Fame is often a substitute for loneliness. It is God and not fame, that sets the lonely in true families. Family will always be the height of true fame. Good PR will support family, always. In the mode of Barack Obama, nations are families connected to other families on the earth. PR the earth and make its well being known. That is true and meaningful fame, towards our collective fortuitous future.”
by Sam Cruickshank, from the book, In The Presence of A Gorilla: 1001 Things About Hollywood PR.
It’ so good to see President Barack Obama‘s beaming smile.
On the cover of The New York Times today, topics that consume The Big Apple are: political donors, Bohener on GOP direction and a very touching story of a Presidential wordsmith, Theodore C. Sorensen, 82, Dies .
Sorensen is the man who wrote for one of America’s most love Presidents, JFK, more on this wordsmith man in a bit. He was described as the President’s counsel. What a compliment for a man where still waters of wisdom ran deep.
Mr Obama needs at least ten such men around him. Ladies too. One of the most searched for topics today on the Times Website is: the education of president obama.
Also rating right up there in The Big Apple’s topics of interest is news on Jon Stewart‘s: rally to restore sanity.
While Fed Agencies pat themselves on the back that the crazy bomber, threatening America’s sanity this Halloween, with scary parcel mail outs, was outwitted by intelligence. That was the show recap over the weekend, as far as NY Times are concerned. A good analysis – although APEC news occurring over the weekend hardly featured as yet.

Michelle Obamaleads by example in wanting a healthy America. In this image, the First lady looks happy as she leaves the NFL Play 60 in New Orleans, post giving a speech in front of the local media and a large group of school children. FLOTUS had spoken of how exercise and a healthy diet and are rocking combo. Image via Splash News.
This week, FLOTUS appeared on TV Talk Show Ellen, popping her dance moves as she was intro-ed onto the show.
When Ellen suggested that she was the better dancer than husband Barack Obama, Mrs Obama nodded: ‘I’m sure of that.’
“He tried to dispute it when he was here,” Ellen said.
“He’s wrong. I think we have proof,” Michelle joked.
It’s good to see the First Lady having fun. This on the back of a White House aide sending out a press release to the world with her name spelled wrong as The UK’s Daily Mail noted. It happens. Go here to read about genuine human error, of an intern who obviously is watching too much Glee when spelling names like that.
One thing excusable being a snob about, is New Zealand butter. It’s to die for.
Try it. Ask for it in America. Let’s get it in every supermarket for happiness to evolve in the USA. New Zealand butter brings an instant smile to your dial.
Start the better butter movement with me, and pass this post on to increase smiles in the USA.

Cool. Patriotic. Antiquish art. Perfect for staring at when you eat fresh New Zealand butter on your wheat toast in the mornings here in the US. Americana art with taste. That’s a good combo for breakfast, I reckon if living in the US.

This just in via text: “d-child’s solider (t.i atlanta) 4 K2 maori co. Please.”
A reply, to this post, from a certain Jewish, West Hollywood publicist of a certain American pop star and (national American treasure) today for Maori soldiers today.

[In 2020, model and future movie star, Yasmin Bidois (Nga puhi & Ngati Awa Maori tribes), will be 25, a leader of a majority New Zealand population of Polyeurasians. How exciting. Everything we do, is for Yasmin and her generation, if any of us, have passion for New Zealand's well being and future. Sign me up. What a beautiful generation to work for and serve. Yes!].
Here’s the paradigm shift of the century, for New Zealanders. It goes like this:
Polyeurasians are expected to sit at 52% of the NZ population by 2021 based on Statistic NZ projections. So by my maths, Olive (as in skin) is the new Black – Culture (as in Maori) the nuance, and, Native the new exotic.–Ata Te Kanawa.
The front page of the Washington Post yesterday examined, brain damage from veterans of war. As can be recalled the Veteran’s budget was approved to be 80% more under Obama, than what it previously was to accommodate for Iraq and Afghanistan troops serving abroad from the U.S.
Currently, 10% of all U.S citizens are registered with the V.A and receive benefits. War is an expensive industry. Not only, do soldiers cost on average $1 million per year, to serve at war – but their rehabilitation and quality of life, goes on for the U.S taxpayer much longer than we all see on the front lines of war.
The price of freedom? And, living wiser to reduce spend? And the effects on human life too? Food for thought today, posited by The Post. It is good to see the American people so supportive of their military troops.
Other wars on the ground in the U.S, like unemployment, need just as much priority and focus also. Monday’s edition of The Post, looks at the “Robin Hood of war” and also positions Rahm Emanuel as a babe with “a big learning curve,” if he wants to be Chicago’s Mayor.
As the last Mayor was Rahm’s boss; and he’s also been the #1 man in America’s Chief of staff – why position Rahm as ‘the underdog?.” It’s not like he’s Sylvester Stallone in a Rocky film from the 80′s. This mans had privilege and he’s equipped?
Clearly that’s enough training for a single American to be able to lead a city? Many other Americans haven’t received such paid training opportunities, or ‘intership’ quality as Rahm has – so this makes The Post, look a little out of touch in D.C with many people in America.
I’d rather read something like, “with his strengths and flaws, Mr Emanuel is the best America can produce to lead Chicago and Illinois.” Just own that! Especially in the nation’s capitol, otherwise credibility is impaired and appearing like D.C is favoring certain people over others.
Go Rahm! Mazel Tov!
And here’s what the people are most peeping on The Post’s website:
Is “Lofty” Emanuel (son of x-ray technician Martha Smulevitz) going to lead Illinois into a better decade? You all seem to think so.
Today on the blog, Pakistan’s flood victims need our sustained love, Haiti has it’s leadership feuds, but did we care much about humanitarian issues? Hell no. I take that back, white people (mainly) experiencing earthquake devastation, we did care about, at #2! As we should too!!! Madonna‘s new single draws her devoted fans to listen up as you brought in our top ten in hot pursuit today on Horiwood’s entertainment and celebrity news topics. Go Lofty!
First Quote: “I’ve done my all. I’ve done my best,” saidChicago‘s mayor Richard Daily at a press conference at City Hall. “Now, I’m ready with my family to begin the new phase of our lives.
Second Quote: “No mayor in America has loved a city more or served a community with greater passion than Rich Daley… He helped build Chicago’s image as a world class city, and leaves a legacy of progress that will be appreciated for generations to come,” said President Obama in a statement.
Third Quote: “One day I would like to run for mayor of the city of Chicago,” Mr. Emanuel said during an April interview on “The Charlie Rose Show.” February 22nd 2011 are the new Mayoral elections in the Windy City.
Richard Daley, 68, on December 26th will make history as Chicago’s longest serving Mayor, surpassing his father’s record of 21 years & eight months that his father, Richard J. Daley, recorded. What a family. Mayor Daley’s wife Maggie has been battling breast cancer for several years. “Put simply, it’s time for Chicago to move on.”
Maybe the Daley’s will join Oprah Winfrey in California next year. The climate may do them good.
Rahm Emanuel is already an iconic figure in America of sorts. His brother, Ari Emanuel, is a high-powered Hollywood agent and the basis for Jeremy Piven’s character in the HBO series Entourage, Ari Gold. Emmanuel himself was the basis for the character played by Bradley Whitford in The West Wing: Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman. Let’s see who Chicago chooses as next Mayor. What a fine job Richard and Maggie Daley did for Illinois.
Emanuel’s humor combined with his work ethic can best be summed up by this comment: “A devout Jew, Emanuel was so intent on negotiating the passage of Congress’s $700 billion bailout bill that he got a special waiver from his rabbi to work through Rosh Hashanah. Lol! Being Jewish can be so complicated at times, when demands of nation call.
Love is contagious in the dance of life. “You just never know whose in on it”–Kim Bryan
Here in L.A, sweetness sits beside you, when sometimes you can feel a tad bit gloomy on things, and sweetness makes you smile.
Kim Bryan showed me flash mob clips today, that made us both laugh. Although the Opera singing clips were amazing, let’s go with a taste of Illinois. The smile on Oprah‘s face as The Black Eyed Peas surprised her with a dance tribute from Chicago, was precious. I think I enjoyed seeing Kim laughing at Oprah’s surprised expressions, more than seeing Oprah celebrating the kickoff start of her 24th season.
“I’ve got a feeling that today’s gonna be a good day… so just dance.”
When you witness scenes like this, reminds you how much spirit the American people have. An eclectic tapestry of colorful people who love life, and love fun. Thank you Kim, Oprah and thank you Chicago.

America’s Olympics bid gets snubbed big time. Chicago is gutted today as Rio de Janeiro win the Olympics Games bid for 2016 in Copenhagen.
Two reasons played a factor: the weather is festive in Rio, but the main reason was, that South America has never hosted a games.
The Obama-led American team whose bid for Chicago got knocked out in round 1, were said to be shocked.
I was so certain Chicago would get the games. Congrats Rio de Janeiro. It’s the Samba Games 2016! That has a fun, warm ring to it. The winning speech for Rio delivered by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said in the presentation: (more…)
