Knowing how Victorian mindsets tick is an Obsession right now with some American academics. The UK is about to become more transparent in its information sharing of greatest literary minds past: This story fascinates in The New York Times. Photo by Erik Jacobs.
Selected paragraphs penned by Patricia Cohen:
“Victorians were enamored of the new science of statistics, so it seems fitting that these pioneering data hounds are now the subject of an unusual experiment in statistical analysis. The titles of every British book published in English in and around the 19th century — 1,681,161, to be exact — are being electronically scoured for key words and phrases that might offer fresh insight into the minds of the Victorians.”
“Dan Cohen and Fred Gibbs, the two historians of science at George Mason University who have created the project, have so far charted how frequently more than two dozen words — among them “God,” “love,” “work,” “science” and “industrial” — appear in British book titles from the French Revolution in 1789 to the beginning of World War I in 1914.”
As Cohen gave an early presentation of findings to date, “Meredith Martin, an assistant professor of English at Princeton who is studying the history of poetic form, was interested in the terms “prosody,” “meter” and “verse.”“I actually sent him an e-mail as he was talking,” Ms. Martin said. She figured he would be inundated with requests, and “I wanted to be first in line.””
There are no perfect people, or perfect leaders. We all learn through living, through loss, through experience.
I’ve always maintained that after the George W. Bush presidency, that no one really understood (including George for much of that), in terms of its effect on the economy– everyone in America should really be given a copy of this book where George W. reflects on what he could have done better. That’s if they wanted it, as a debrief –to his politics.
However, here in America, one’s therapy, you have to pay for. It is a capitalist nation after all. Today there’s some good news for George W. Bush ‘author.’
NEW YORK (AP) — George W. Bush‘s memoirs book, Decision Points has sold more than 1.1 million copies. It was released Nov. 9 and 135,000 copies were sold as e-books.
Bill Clinton‘s My Life and two President Obama books, The Audacity of Hope and Dreams from My Father, have also sold at least a million copies.
Because many people are grieving right now the loss of so many things and I’m from a nation that’s in national mourning right now over 29 lost coal miners lives in New Zealand, here’s also Patrick Swayze and Lisa Niemi‘s compelling and inspiring book The Time of My Life–that deals with grief and the grief process to offer hope along with George W’s book.

She’s like Mel Gibson. People love her and hate her. Two views on the rather racist Sarah Palin. Her book cover and Barbara Bush‘s thoughts on her (again).
Hi Team. Here’s your top ten most voted celebrity and entertainment news posts on Horiwood.Com here in Hollywood for Monday 22nd November 2010. Special thanks to friends at this time, for making blogging in Hollywood enjoyable and possible. Love you all worldwide. In tough times, smile more, give more, be more real. Share more. Love more. Here’s our top ten.
Eva Gaboris the exotic Hollywood beauty who was born in Budapest, the baby daughter of Vilmos Gábor (1884-1962), a soldier, and Jolie Gábor (1894-1997). She was the first Gabor sister to immigrate to the USA. We have Eva to thank for being a trailblazing humorist in the Gabor family and their contribution to Hollywood entertainment. She was funny, fearless and brave.
Eva is best known for her role in the hit TV sitcom, Green Acres where one day Eva Gabor was an exotic Hollywood socialite styled wife, who woke up from a Hollywood Hills dream; as her character Lisa Douglas in this show instead, on a Hollywood set that resembled the New Zealand green countryside. Comedy is quite often about locational opposite to a character’s personality type.
As a kid I remember, Green Acres was a popular TV series rerun, that used to screen just after the I Love Lucy show with Lucille Ball.
Eva somehow used to gloss over Lucille’s legendary slapstick comedic timing, which was a little rough, compared to Gabor’s purring elegance.
A pancake griddle was never the same for Kiwi’s again, after Eva burned everything she cooked on it, in that role. She made every Kiwi think their Edmonds Cookery Book directed pikelets were amazing. Such was her gift as a comedic beauty from afar, to New Zealand’s kitchens.
People who throw-away their looks and privilege for ‘the laugh,’ were always the favorite Hollywood stars in New Zealand. Still are today.
My Maori grandma, loved her because both Eva and nana both had broken English like many Maori did who had never been to English schools, and Eva didn’t care, she wove it into the character.
In that sense Eva Gabor, was a hori too. Nana found this to be the funniest thing she’d ever seen, on her TV set. A Hollywood star, similar to her own reality, with English being her second language too.
I think that a reversioned series of Green Acres starring Eva, but dubbed over in Te Reo Rangatira (the Maori language) and aired in New Zealand with subtitles, would be the most funniest thing ever. Joanna Paul would be funny as ‘Eva’ to give Eliza Bidois a run for her comedic timing. :)
A reversioned series would honor, Eva’s gift to many Maori people like Nana’s generation. Her generation of Maori were funny people (amongst themselves), and a tough audience to make laugh – Eva was one of the few nonMaori that could make nana’s generation laugh. She could cut the mustard, having the ‘hori comedic’ aesthetic down pat.
She was a Hollywood star, that truly transcended any cultural difference. In New Zealand, we all loved Eva Gabor.

Have you ever wondered what muslim teens think? Here’s a book with a good message, Hollywood story line approved, for American teens to read.
Find out what happens to Haja bin Kanaan a muslim Palestinian teenager, when she unexpectedly falls for Lt. Joshua Isaacson of America-Israel.
This is the book all teens in America will benefit from reading and understanding both a Muslim, Jewish and Christian worldview. Compelling in explaining how teens in the Middle East think.
Who: Courage to Love
What: “a modern day romance novel”
Author: Robert Ellis of Beverly Hills 90210, California.
With a tribute to Disney and her ”Mouse House,” teen spun superstardom, Miley Cyrus‘ new tattoo says a few things. Following up with her “just breathe” tattoo across her ribs, Smilers new piece in ink on her right ear, says: “Love.”
E! News quotes Smilers as saying: “There’s so much negativity in the world and what you only need to hear is all the love. People try to say to me, ‘I just heard someone say this or that about you,’ and I just ignore it because it’s irrelevant. Love is what makes the world go around, and that’s all we need to focus on.”
[Simbiotic subtext of the still image: Love is in the Air. Love is on The Air. Or more specifically, My Love is On Ear/Air--both funny and clever as a pop star as she says, buy my music and Mickey Mouse's ear looks like this today].
I love this kid. Smilers is always so smart. And dating an Australian, Liam Hemsworth, she also gives a tribute to Baz Luhrmann and Paul Mercurio with the theme song, from their movie about freedom from oppression that can only be found in the dance of one’s own rhythm of a shared life. Here’s some Strictly Ballroom.
And from a teen’s tattoo, to dance and film–if you’d like a “good read” about forbidden young love for a fiesty teen girl character called, Haja bin Kanaan, the same age as Miley, go here to buy the book Courage To Love for good perennial reading. The novel is set on the Gaza strip, where like Cyrus’ fresh ink, Love [too] is in the Air. For a good audio book read, click on this unique book’s cover, for a right treat.

Yes it’s true. Twilight Saga, New Moon tickets that are being presold for the November 20th release date of the film, have almost sold out. That must be the scariest movie release date ever for Hollywood studios who are competing the weekend of November 20th against Stephenie Meyer’s epic love story at the box office.
Yes, it’s the best time for studios to reshuffle their film premiere schedules and dump all of their risky films at the box office at the same time as New Moon, if they want their good films to have a box office #1 reputation. Such is the Twilight effect on Hollywood. Oh, and did we mention that Native American Indian actors like Taylor Lautner, are helping reinvent Hollywood history’s film distribution wheel. History is being rewritten by the cast and crew of Twilight, at Stephenie Meyer’s skilled author’s vision, business brains and hands. Truly remarkable!
MovieTickets.com report how over a dozen of their New Moon show times have been totally sold out. Fandango reports 50—50!—sell-out New Moon screenings. Fandago are also officially reporting that New Moon is already its top-seller heading into this weekend. Comcast owns Fandango.
Congratulations to Summit Entertainment and Stephenie Meyers and cast, for marketing brilliance that reinvents the wheel in creating a demand for film distribution, that’s ahead of the game by 10 weeks. Wow!
New Moon’s saleable popularity with audiences is just more proof that a popular book series, turned into a movie series, is the one of the most desirable and wisest ways to go! The book is a powerful tool at cinemas. Twilight Saga readers and movie goers will also enjoy the love story Courage To Love by Californian author, Robert Ellis.
L.J Smith wrote The Vampires Diaries books 14 years before Stephenie Meyers published the Twilight Saga books.
If there’s any similarities, should the L.J Smith team sue?
Probably not, there are no new ideas under the sun, just recycled ideas, so let’s hope L.J Smith’s camp don’t get sue happy. This is a pic of LJane Smith.
Woah! L.J Smith hearts the trippy world of the unicorn forrest. Let’s just say, hat she’s totally out there, as this pic depiction on her website shows! Scary!!!
Perhaps it shows that slightly eccentric peeps have a lot to offer the world by way of hit book series.
In the wake of a bad line call, at a pivotal point in her US Open 2009 Semi Finals match against Kim Clijsters Serena has taken to her blog to write to her fans about her upcoming biography book, called On The Line.
She’s sold me on it already! Anyway, here’s what Serena Williams writes about the pressures of being a high profiled sports star and the woman with the fastest serve in tennis.
Says Serena:
The thought of the weight I carry can sometimes be paralyzing, to some, but for me, I enjoy it. I enjoy being told I’m too fat to win, or my career is over – I’ve seen my glory days. This is what everyone was saying about me publicly, in papers, quietly at home. But as Maya Angelou said, “And still I rise.” (more…)

We know that Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer‘s life has been signed to Blue Water Comics Female Force biographical comic house. Meyer’s comic book that Blue Water Productions promotes as being: “a journey into the life and mind of the author of Twilight.” Meyer’s Female Force comic biopic is being released in Novemeber, when her Twilight Saga: New Moon film hits theaters.
Gosh, that promotional tagline is kind of a bit exploitative of the central subject, like… a voyeuristic journey you pay a ticket price to see at a theme park, but as each comic book is only 22 pages long, what harm can be done in that? So Meyer’s is up for the challenge to be comic-con’s next big thing. She’s a sport.
Now Blue Water comics is also signing J.K Rowling of Harry Potter fame to their Female Force brand. Rowling’s inspiring life will be chronicled in cartoon form too.
What makes these two women good cartoon fodder as female forces to be reckoned with? It’s easy, imagination and an ability to think in a series of ideas along a narrative theme. They are sort of like a world class fashion designer, creating 8 new collections of clothes every two years, but their runway to showcase their written ideas is the literary world and cinemas. Each book they create is a collection of ideas just like a fashion designer does each season.
Female heroes indeed! Congrats to both ladies for agreeing to inspire the chil’n of the world. The biggest congratulations should go to Blue Water Productions though. Working out a way to capture both Meyer and Rowlings audience book base for their cartoons (okay, they’re all one and the same audience!) is pretty clever business.
Book markets, cartoon markets, film markets = good interchangeable media products for an entertainment media audience to buy. Very smart partnerships here. Finding recession proof markets that are rich sources of consumers income, is what Blue Water Productions has achieved with both of these Female Force comic book issues. Their distribution model is already made for them, with Rowling and Meyer’s market base already proven and pioneered.
Wow! A comic book company that is so smart in wheeling and dealing real life heroes in cartoon format. The women were imagination rich, dedicated their writing skills to writing down what they imagined. Their ideas were originally packaged as book series. They then became business rich too.
Isn’t this a model, for America and Britain, to be less reliant on financial banking systems as a means of wealth and actually create new things with imagination and with a nations hands? Yes. The blueprint 3 of these women’s lives holds this wisdom in business and economic growth. Love them!

Kia Ora (hello). Some of you are asking me why I don’t write much poetry these days and just blog about celebrities. So this one’s for you. It’s a poem submitted for Whetu Moana Lua, poetry anthology collection of Maori and Polynesian Poets around the world. Editors are: Robert Sullivan, Reina Whaitiri and Dr Albert Wendt. Originally, I wrote for Whetu Moana when being trained by author and professor, Witi Ihimaera, in the art of creative writing.
To enjoy and appreciate my poetry for its inflections of the Maori language, I recommend using this tool, to understand words you may not have heard of before. Being a hori (Maori) in Hollywood is a pioneering thing, so the online Maori dictionary will help any of you LA types reading it.
My poems from Whetu Moana I, are taught in Universities in America (the mainland), New Zealand, Hawaii, the UK and Edinburgh Scotland to name a few. So…. I’m shouting this out to all you guys and dolls today doing English Literature progams around the world. Thanks for reading poetry. And most importantly, may you all continue to write your own poetry too.
David Cross, 46, author of Drink for a Reason, has written a rather interesting author’s bio. At least he’s testing whether people actually read bios, these days.

Kristen Stewart and Q’orianker Kilcher have Summit Entertainment’s Twilight Eclipse casting in common. Kristen’s casting as Bella Swan for the third film of Stephenie Meyers novels, proves Kristen Stewart is hot enough to make both Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen and Taylor Lautner’s Jacob Black both have chemistry, both onscreen and also in real life, with a cinematic association to the LA actress.
However, when put to public vote, it is Q’orianker Kilcher who is rating today at #1, on the issue of the Twilight Saga’s casting choices. Kilcher, the actress who starred at 14 years of age as Pocahontas in The New World, is the rising star of Horiwood.Com the past two month. She’s got blog heat and an exciting future in film ahead of her. Q’orianker is 19 years old and has a bright future in mainstream movies.
Horiwood also congratulates Julia Jones III, 30, for landing the role of Leah Clearwater, 19, for Twilight Saga Eclipse. Beating out beautiful, highly accomplished, younger and even more intelligent actresses, is no easy feat. Congratulations too Ms Jones. Perhaps Julia Jones could be a Meryl Streep kind of actress. Meryl is still going strong in her 60s. That could be Julia Jones’ story too if she has staying power in Hollywood.

I have had the great good fortune to attend many book launches during the 40 years I have been involed in the book world but few would compare to this one.
First off there was live entertainment throughout what proved to be a four course sit-down lunch at one of Ponsonby’s finest and most durable restaurants, SPQR.
Secondly the food was all from the book being launched and it was absolutely divine!
Look at this, makes a change from my usual lunch of ham and tomato sandwiches!
Here’s the menu as described to us by chef/author Anne Thorpe:
Caprese Salad - A little iconic starter of Buffalo mozzarella
Tasty prosciutto ham, Vine ripened tomatoes, Sweet basil and flaky salt
Served with delicious OliveNZ extra virgin olive oil
Paua Risotto The paua arrives fresh on the day from the Far North, thanks to commercial free-diver Sam Kereopa. I’m combining it with the creamiest, tastiest Arborio rice and I can tell you now, this dish is truly wicked! Koura Linguine (pic left) Sam’s out on the Hauraki harvesting crayfish for this event. He’ll be straight in the water as soon as he returns from the Far North. You will thoroughly enjoy this super-fresh dish, served with the beautiful flavours of fresh limes, lemongrass, ginger, garlic, chilli and tonnes of aroha!
Aporo & Calvados Organic New Zealand apples oven-roasted and flambéed with Calvados liqueur
Served with the sexy French St Agur cheese
These guys practice environmentally sustainable practices and run the world’s first winery to be constructed entirely under the green building code. I understand too that Yealands is NZ’s largest privately-owned vineyard. Built from scratch in 2002 and the wines were a perfect food match. I tried both the Pinot Gris and the Resiling and both were excellent.
The event, for that is what it was, was superbly MC’d by Matai Smith , while the entertainment was provided by Cydel, Ardijah’s Betty-Anne (love that ukelele babe!) and Ryan, and cousin of the author, super star Whirimako Black ,(I have all her CD’s, bought at Matakana’s Village Bookshop).
So it was stunning food, great music and most pleasant company. I had the privilege of being on the Random House table with publisher Nicola Legat, publicist Sarah Thornton, Random House author Denise L’Estrange-Corbet , book designer Olivia Haddon and the man who wrote the foreword to the book, Cancer Busting Food, Anne’s surgeon , Trevor Smith.
What a lunch, what a book launch.
As publisher Nicola Legat ,(how many books a year does this woman launch ?, and she does them all so well), said in her opening remarks, this is unique New Zealand food being presented to a mainstream audience and I reckon she was spot on.
The recipes in this superb book (with spectacular photography by Aaron McLean) feature mainly kai moana (seafood) and Anne brings to these recipes a unique Maori emphasis and flavour. She is of course a renowned TV chef but more importantly she is a superb chef/hostess in her own home and I am greatly privileged to have been one of those who has enjoyed the hospitality of Anne, and barrister husband Fred (another Gisbore old boy!), in their wonderful beach home on the Nortland coast (pic left).
Yes, it was indeed a memorable lunch. I may need a nap before dinner! And as an aside I don’t believe I have ever been to a book launch with such a large number of media people present, some working while others enjoyed the lunch and entertainment.
Thanks to Anne, Random House, our entertainers, and SPQR, owner Chris Rupe, (an old friend of the author), was even waiting on the tables himself along with James, maitre’d extraordinaire.!
