A few months ago a precious Aunty of Los Angeles passed away this day, on the 12th of the month. Her name was Elvira. Here’s Alexander Rybak‘s performance of Fairytale on violin in honor of her life, her spirit of Peace and her fine taste in good things.

This version was performed in honor of Barack Obama‘s Nobel Peace Prize win a year ago.

Aunt Elvira was the sweetest. As a person, she became my American touchstone, a symbol of the celebration found in Life, as an element of honor. One of her smiles could heal a thousand blows to the soul. She was a special lady and is much missed still.

RUTH’S SONG written by STEVE APIRANA – 11.12.10

Ruth as the Jewish legend goes was once an immigrant in a foreign land. Though some tried to persuade her to turn back to be with her own people and to forsake the new people she’d joined, her faith kept her in it.

I like Ruth’s spirit. She was an adventurer who had courage. I have a sister whose second name is Ruth. She has courage too, to see others and love people from her heart. She doesn’t see what society sees, she sees their future of great potential. What she does with her Ruth-heart is so inspiring. She’s been that way all her life, so I should really make a bigger fuss of her than I do. I’m just so used to my ‘Ruth sister’ being that way. We all are. But our Ruth is remarkable.

However, this song is dedicated to Aunt Elvira Kanim, who passed away on this day 4 months ago  – the first California ‘family member,’ I lost in America. She was sweeter than honey til the end. She died of cancer. She too was an immigrant once. Aunt Elvira taught me a lot and I loved her.

Song written by Steve Apirana, words by the original Ruth.

Two months ago today (the new official date), a sweet lovely lady named Elvira Kanim (Aunt Elvira to family, Aunt Elvis to me while blogging), passed away. I’ve said a lot about her on this blog. She was a honey. One of my el/ owl teachers in L.A, before she left us.

I’ll let someone else express how special sweet little ‘old’ ladies are who have it in their hearts to teach others. Here’s a new voice, violinist Steve Kanim, in a blog entry on Swil’s Myspace about his music teacher, a sweet lady too, titled Remembering Ethel Crook

“Recently, a member of my audience asked me, “What motivates you to speak.”

“I responded that there have been times when I have been silenced in my life. Many times since, I have been given the privilege of speaking on behalf silenced hearts. My heroes in my life have been people that spoke up for me when I didn’t have a voice of my own. Ethel Crook spoke as an educator on my behalf. She implored to my adoptive parents that my early skills as a violinist were worthy of private lessons. She saved my life. She then made sure that I could be a member of the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, when I was in High School, by driving me to and from rehearsals and concerts. She used those moments to plant seeds in my heart that took decades to germinate. At her 95 birthday celebration she seemed surprised by her impact on my life. After all, she was just being herself. Ethel Crook is why I am convinced of the value of self expression in community.

I have heard many times since that I was some-one’s hero for speaking up. I promise to never take that for granted. The Love of God continually transforms me through the loving lives around me. I will miss Ethel Crook. Heaven is now a better place. I am a better man because of her.

Swil Kanim

Aunt Elvira was this kind of person too. She was much loved and I miss her presence and sweetness in the world today. What a lady.

Swil Kanim has written a song called wooden flute. He is Native American Indian. Having learnt from a good teacher, Steve inspires young people today to love music and violin too. Here’s a kid call Tera as Swil Kanim introduces her performing Mozart Violin Concerto #3 in G Major, 1st mvt.

Sambusik and Mamoul recipes, for ‘old school’ Middle Eastern peace loving citizens of LA:

Aunt Frieda was Middle Eastern. She was good friends with Aunt Elvira who I nursed until she died at nights here in L.A. Aunt Frieda was also an amazing cook. She was a friend of a family, I love and know.

This one’s going up for Frieda’s legacy of L.A today.

I never met her, or any one of Frieda’s family members. But… anyone who Aunt Elvira deemed fit to keep news clippings about, I’m all good to learn from. Aunt Frieda inspired Los Angeles citizens with her otherworldly taste sensibilities in the kitchen.

I dig her Sambusik recipe today. Photographed on a Ram’s wool blanket, once made in Ohio, for your entertainment.

Angelina Jolie is promoting Salt worldwide at the box office. She’s aware that Lady Gaga, bottle-blonde pop upstart has the #1 fame ranking, with President Barack Obama sitting firm at #2. Hollywood’s reigning Queen, daughter of Jon Voight (who stars in the upcoming flick National Treasure), drives it down the middle, Tiger Woods golfing green styles, by announcing today that she’s going to play Hollywood’s most iconic bottle blonde, Marilyn Monroe in an adaptation of the book The Life And Opinions Of Maf The Dog, And Of His Friend Marilyn Monroe by author Andrew O’Hagan.

Andrew added (as sourced via Monsters & Critics) that George Clooney, will play the role of Frank Sinatra, who gave Marilyn a dog named Maf, whose eyes the narrative of this film will be told through. Cinematic puppy love.  In celebrity talk, Angelina is saying: “Hi blonde puppy of Obama” to Lady Gaga. The real seasoned celebrity b*tch is now in the room.” I love it.

With good humor, Jolie also sends a message to Washington to up the anti and not follow pop cultural trends, but to create them yourself through action and that’s always a good move. No one likes kennel politics based on following puppies new appeal around for populous vote rankings, so this is good mature leadership for America today–as to where the paparazzi’s spotlight should go and the purpose of why.

Good sporting fun between Hollywood and D.C’s leaders to create American culture with this announcement.

With double Oscar winners in the lead roles of Maf (can dogs win Oscars too now? this could be a trifecta), this move on the Hollywood chess board is about as surreal-real as Hollywood can get.

Angelina Jolie is both humorous and totally hot today. She says, “see me through a dog’s eyes for goodness sakes. I’m good for that. It’s never about a big shot director. Even a standard poodle dog could see me and get me.” Love her! Diva.

Whether Jolie does this film or not, is not the point, she sends her message and frees the U.S President up from obsessing about Gaga’s popular appeal, while promoting Salt worldwide with a simple question from this casting news: Who is Marilyn Monroe of Hollywood? Wow. What a move from Hollywood’s most active global humanitarian!

On the night she died, I sat beside Aunt Elvira‘s bedside, and as she breathed her last breaths, I read these words about ‘Attitude’ on her bedside wall.

As I read these words sitting beside her watching her life hang in the balances, I realized I was showing the most signs of room for improvement, perhaps out  of anyone on the planet.

She was a very special Aunt and sister to her family and I choose to celebrate her today on my Hollywood celebrity news blog, one month after her passing, and share a little bit of what she taught me about valuing the gift of life in yourself and others. So for Elvira’s great legacy of love, here we go:

Attitude is everything: Attitude is the way you think. Your attitude is something other people can actually see. They can hear it in your voice, see it in the way you move, feel it when they are with you. Your attitude expresses itself in everything you do, all the time, wherever you are.

Positive attitudes always invite positive results. Negative attitudes always invited negative results.

Attitude makes a difference every hour, every day, in everything you do for your entire life. What you get out of each thing you do will equal the attitude you have when you do it.

Anything that you do with a positive attitude will work for you. Anything that you do with a negative attitude will work against you.

If you have a positive attitude, you are looking for ways to solve the problems that you can solve, and you are letting go of things over which you have no control.

You can develop a positive attitude by emphasizing the good, by being tough-minded, and by refusing defeat.”

I share these thoughts with the definition of the word ‘celebrity’ which is “someone who is worthy of being celebrated.” May a sweet attitude always be the star of us all. Aunt Elvira was a sweetheart.

At this time (12.15am), a month ago today, the most sweetest lady, Elvira Kanim, left this world.

She was darling. What a special lady. Sometimes you are fortunate enough in life, to meet someone special in their hour of need. Aunt Elvira was that person for me. I wrote creatively about her on this blog before she passed away. Her stamp is on my Hollywood story. Along with her family, friends and everyone who knew her, I can say that deservedly, Elvira was very much loved.

As a person, I knew her as being as equally sweet as she was strong.

~To learn love, life, liberty, wisdom, purpose to serve and lead with happiness; always stay close to your els. Action–Horiwood, July 2010~

When you first get to Hollywood, tour operators suggest you purchase a star map on Hollywood Blvd, that offers directions to celebrities homes and addresses. People buy these by the hundreds.

Beyond tourism, when you seek to commit to community and put down roots, there is a saying that to make it in Hollywood, you don’t need a map. You just need to know your way around your star tattoos.

But the truth is, California’s most fulfilling life, is when you choose to stay close to els.

Tonight I got home to see flowers for beloved Elvira sent with love from her dear friend, Gilda Grego. They sit on the table, beneath her brother Emile Kanim‘s conceptual planning for his book on earth sustainability titled, Plentitude. Befitting.

~Remembering, dear. beautiful. Elvira~

To have friends who love your memory is comforting, reflective of a very gorgeous life as these les fleurs blanc bare witness to this fact. Friendship is like fragant flowers, being shared from the heart.

Aunt Elvira would have loved these hot numbers. Just the thought of them, let alone their presence. Thank you Gilda Grego for being a wonderful and thoughtful friend. Your written words say it all.

I write these words as Aunt Elvis’ great nephew and niece, Matthew and Kelly Bryan and friends may jet out to the Hollywood Bowl, to catch Planet Earth Live with the LA Philharmonic Orchestra performing outdoors to the BBC’s footage, underneath the stars. Or, just chill instead too. Again, the Earth is something this family celebrate. Nature is the best teacher.

And as the performance arts is what we all do, both on and off the camera or stage, or blogs, or music concerts or in movie theaters on the silver screen and physicians theater rooms, or island view beachside vistas, gardens, books, (a-hem) tennis courts, court rooms, military bands, canvases, sculpting blocks, jewelry shop windows or in stem cell research laboratories, the phosphorescent depths of the deep sea, the Hollywood Hills, the Mountains of Arizona, China or Hasbaya Lebanon and down the runways of fashion too, here’s a little Rita Hayworth for your entertainment tonight from 1946, especially for GG’s sweetness as a friend. Put the blame on sweetness and fun and a zest for life, always. Go Gilda Grego. And, go baby Elm too.

About a week ago, we lost a very special lady of L.A. Her name was Aunt Elvira and she was gracious, loving and sweet.

She was also acerbic and funny too, with her dazzling wit and humor. This image of a papaya tree growing fruit, reminds me of her spirit today. Fruitful people are the best. All of her family are fruitful like this.

Thanks Aunt E. Miss her.

While watching Uncle Emile reading his play he’d written as actor Danny J. Evans works at his Hollywood tan, baking in the sun; Teddy of Go.Daddy.Com calls. In this household of blokes, it’s nice to hear a woman’s melodic voice, for a change.

Her phone call is about Aunt Elvira‘s Funeral Poem and its website domain name, we gave the poem when we posted the poem yesterday to celebrate her “2nd graduation day” and share the meaning of her life of love, for others.

Teddy asks me our plans for the domain name as its very interesting to her. (Plans? What plans? I  think silently to myself). She suggests that the website, should become a blog where others can share their funeral poems too, or, the domain name should host a collection of freshly written poems each day, about celebrating life in death–for others to benefit from–when grief and loss, has their souls gripped and sore. Funeral poems on Elvira’s poem’s website could comfort them, says Teddy.

As I’ve never had a phone call like this before, from any website hosting service, the calmness that is Teddy’s voice intrigues. She should be a Hollywood producer. Needless to say, anything to do with Aunt Elvis, is always going to fascinate people, across the U.S. Elvira had that kind of allure, sweetness and charm–as Teddy’s phone call showed me today. I shouldn’t be pleasantly surprised by Teddy’s phone call, really–but I still am.

Thanks Teddy. Teddy @ GoDaddy should be a Hollywood TV producer, commissioning new ideas for TV. She’s good. Teddy only watches pre-recorded TV programs, doesn’t Twitter, Facebook or MySpace, never goes to see a movie, and loves reading books instead for her recreation and downtime. Teddy also doesn’t have a blog, which is why I’m cutting her into my blog today. That and the fact, that Teddy tells me she loves the Kiwi New Zealand accent in America. Thanks Teddy. If ever you buy a domain name, call (USA) 1.480.505.8859, press option 1, and ask for Teddy. She’s okay.  :)

What follows are two Emily Dickinson‘s funeral poems, that Teddy loves the most for her friends and family members at funerals. Hearing Teddy’s voice come down Aunt Elvira’s phone line, is a surreal trip today. National interest. I like Teddy’s love of poetry and her inquisitive questions, a lot.

Aunt Elvis poem has had 30 hits already. That’s tres impressive for a brand new blog, in 4 hours of being online. Wow. Go girl!

[Music, Elvis Presley King of Rock N' Roll singing music from his deep, American gospel music roots. In particular, Elvis sings, Amazing Grace, a song originally written by John Newton, a slave trader, who penned this song, when he had an epiphany of what love meant and is. Amazing Grace will always be hot, because it comes from this reference point and turning point of reality. Given this history, having the courage to live beyond enslaving others, and to set love free, is more often than not, 0ur constant challenge in America. We need courage to live beyond the costly lessons we've learned from history, in order to be a better future. Aunty Elvira's life was always about this. Even peoples bad habits, she challenged them as individuals, to live life free from them. She always believed the best in her America. I have a feeling that John Newton, would have admired her spirit of amazing grace too.]

Vintage Mother Teresa footage has me fascinated today, and I’m not Catholic, I just love the light she left us as a gift. When you lose someone sweet in this world, you’re at a loss, because your whole being is still wired to be around their sweetness, because true sweetness in a person, is addictive and you never want to be without it. The memory of such a person, is like golden healing honey to your senses and your spirit. To replicate this for others, would  be a noble thing to do.

Here’s how you voted our top ten entertainment, celebrity and newsy items of interest today, here on Horiwood.Com. Thanks everyone.

From the beloved’s walls speaks this message, with poignant music with a difference, for effect:

The same day as I stare at this typewriter pondering what it was that she would write on it, American Idol star, Carrie Underwood skipped down the aisle with her hockey dude, Mike Fisher –Southern styles Saturday.

Tabloid bible of America, People says that the duo married in a tent in Atlanta, Georgia with 250 close friends and family celebrating their big day. RadarOnline.com says that the $500,000, elegant occasion starred classical music with the newlyweds favorite Bible readings being the star of their love. Different yet timeless.

People goes on to report the star couple saying: “We could not feel more blessed to have found each other and to have shared this day with our friends and family that mean so much to us!”  According to Billboard, they signed their names, Mike & Carrie Fisher. How cute.

Now back to Aunt Elvira’s Underwood typewriter. It’s probably about time, to dust this baby off and bring it back inside the house and continue the traditions of heart writing, as a branch and offshoot of her Elvi Art legacy. Food for thought perhaps as a project of renewal and restoration.

“Love is to always know marvelous grace, like beauty for ashes”–Steve Apirana for filmmaker Reina Webster and the beloved.

Creative Prose: As our beloved lies resting, half asleep while subconsciously taking in the news on MSNBC, Contessa Sam cuts from her newsdesk to a reporter on the beach on the coastline of Miami for a story on turtles.

The reporter clad in cargo shorts says “In a Noah’s Ark styled transportation mission, the U.S government are moving turtles and turtles eggs, off the coastline. The next generation of turtles are under threat of being burned due to the oil spill.”

Immediately, I think of Young Americans, many lie sleeping in embryonic stage, in a state of grace like the beloved is. These young Americans caught up in an economic crises spill over effect, are not getting much attention as these precious turtles, by the U.S government. Or perhaps, like turtles, it takes a community effort for America’s young, irrespective of government acting, to get ahead.

Because you’re with me, I will not fear“–pop star, Brooke Fraser

Without meaning to sound weird… (hey this is horiwood.com, so I guess I’m excused of all weirdness :) … Your love letters sent across the world, are beautiful

So… this one goes up like unabashed love from a precious alabaster [juke] box for her spirit’s kept P r o m i s e

These words from Alegra22 blog, have resonance this eve, while sitting at the feet of our beloved. She’s been having dreams lately:

“Two nights ago I had a lucid dream. A flood was coming. Standing on a hillside I could see the wall of water moving towards me, covering the earth. It was beautiful and terrifying and there was no escape. In the next minute I was running down a narrow city street, preparing for the impact, for death. As I ran, I looked up at the stone walls of an ancient city and then suddenly I found myself lifted above them, held by the limbs of a tree. The water rushed past me and I understood how perfectly, exquisitely alive I was. And so was the tree. It pulsed and hummed with an energy that radiated like light. It was protecting me.

I woke up and without thinking about the words, I wrote in my journal:

The Flood and the Tree of Life.

The dream has multiple meanings for me. It spoke to the themes in my novel and thesis, confirming that I am on the right path. But more importantly, it reminded me that the garden of my own childhood Eden, that state of grace, is still alive and well inside of me. (more…)
