THE HORIWOOD TOP TEN – CHRISTMAS EVE – 12.24.10

“Our cup overfloweth with joie de vivre to share with others”–motto for 2011 onwards.

This Christmas Eve is the month where a Maori Hollywood entertainment celebrity blog made history and hit the 2.8 million threshold thanks to you all worldwide. That’s never happened before in Hollywood’s entertainment history. Hawaii takes the top spot as both the 44thPresident of America and New Zealand’s Prime Minister vacation at the tropical jewel isles location of the USA.

Here in California this artwork at the Wiedeman gallery photographed in Hollywood this eve, reminds me of the umbrella I’ve been living under while living here in Hollywood California to date. Very French with a Hollywood twist. And Jakey Davis shines with two of his biggest fans, sister Taylor Jane and his mom, teen mom’s champion life coach - The Maori Rose of Sharon across the world in New Zealand. It’s all about children and their world we help and support them create. As you can see, I’m on Jakey’s program as he’s already busting out his Peace sign moves for photos, so fine like already, on a Kiwi beach. Too cute.

WATER BABIES AS CELEBRITIES OF US ALL

1 bilion people in the world don’t have access to clean drinking water. Yet we are made up of 63% H2O as people. I think true celebrity is about whose moving water flows in the world. It’s as simple as something like that.

Nicole Richie is one of the brightest stars that does all year round. She’s our girl. Click on pic to learn more about what we can do through initiatives like Global Water.

To make clean water flow in dry places where it needs to be the most, let’s do it. Thanks. Love you all.

SHUSH-E DANIYAL

One of my most favorite characters in world history was Daniel. Translated his name means “God is my judge.”

He could interpret political times and the dreams of kings. He could read writing on the wall. He walked with men as wise and courageous as he was. Daniel was captured as a teenager and yet lived in captivity in King’s courts for over 80 years. Scholars believe Daniel “would have been almost 100 years old at the point he passed away. Many posit that he possibly died at Susa in Iran. Tradition holds that his tomb is located in Susa at a site known as Shush-e Daniyal.

However other nations claim to have the tomb of Daniel also. Egypt being one. Samarkand being another, a city of Uzbekistan that sits in the middle of the ancient Silk Road between China and the West.

Daniel spoke of liberation for his people. He prophesied that there would come a day, where his people would no longer be in captivity.

What a guy! We need to make a little bit more like him in these times. Revelation is needed, I reckon.

THE HORIWOOD TOP TEN – TUE 12.7.10

Transparency is like refined gold, it has to be earned, tested with trust. So, I like people who endeavor to display a transparent spirit as leaders who serve the best interests of all, hence this quote running on this blog: ”In my time as Prime Minister I have tried to push for greater transparency, and we are happy to have an independent body overseeing expenses and entitlements for MPs [politicians], says New Zealand’s leader from Wellywood/ Wellington,”John Key 3 News. Information is like water flow. It often doesn’t flow to the right people who need to have it. Knowledge equals power. Africa needs water. What do we do this knowledge?

Transparency is good in any sincere culture but discretion is a part of wisdom too: ‘Do not let the left hand know what the right hand is doing… Be as wise as a serpent and as harmless as a dove… A wise man conceals a matter.’

Often people who expect others to be transparent are not themselves–so good men and naturally transparent people–are forced to be wise and manage their own information about themselves, like a cultural taonga of New Zealand belonging to the collective people of Aotearoa New Zealand. Each nation is a knowledge farm of fruitful minds.

Here in America, today - Shiloh Jolie-Pitt has already worked out what her parents do and wants to follow in their footsteps already as a performer turning out a show. “Shi’Bouncy” couldn’t be happier with her baseball bat and military attire as mother Angelina Jolie, sister Zahara and Maddox go to Lee’s Art Store themselves in Manhattan, New York to shop before they imagine and create as artists. Too cute. This family is on the attack today from haters not in Jolie’s league, or, all of her children either. Love it. Maddox Jolie-Pitt has been a star longer than many people claiming to be celebs today. He was born this way. A star.

Jolie’s statement today could be–Our best art, is serving our children, to be informed by their worldview, creating their art. In any culture, isn’t that always the truth.

POETIC LICENSE

Poetic License: “is a colloquial term, sometime euphenism, used to denote the distortion of fact, alteration of the conventions of grammar or language, or rewording of pre-existing text made by an artist to improve a piece of art. An example of artistic license is if a visual artist decided it was more artistically desirable to portray St Paul’s Cathedral next to the Houses of Parliament in a scene of London even though in reality they are not close together.  (more…)

SOME CROWDED HOUSE AND NELSEN MANDELA – DON’T DREAM IT’S OVER

Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.–Nelsen Mandela

Music: Crowded House, Don’t Dream It’s Over

Hollywood rugby pop art: All rugby communities know it’s a long way to that blasted try line. Stay close to each other, create play and reach forward together for a dream. The proven fortitude and new flexibility of teamwork is always the dream.

Artwork: The Key & Bars by Nelsen Mandela

Limited edition lithograph and hand cast numbered metal key

Nelson Mandela is the world’s greatest living statesman and nobel prize winner. He is a symbol of the struggle against apartheid and has now turned his hand to art. This stunning and unique piece symbolises the story of his time spent in prison on Robben Island.

The Key and Bars contains two powerful icons of the 28 years of Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment. His fingers have slowly and deliberately been drawn down the page to recreate the bars of his cell. The Key to his cell has been hand-cast into an edition of just 3000, each numbered and accompany this very powerful edition.

This superb item is personally signed by Nelson Mandela and is supplied framed and glazed, measuring an impressive 23” by 17”.

It is supplied with full certification from the Mandela Foundation.

In the 29th year after a prison of pain, Nelsen Mandela walked to freedom, and the whole world went with him in that place. The irony is, that without pain’s temporal confinement, we don’t know what freedom is. After pain, we then know. That is grief’s gift in the humanness of our shared recovery.

SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE – JESUS DISSING ART CREATES A FURORE

Rating hot on The Washington Post blog today is this story by Jacqueline Trescott titled: Ant-covered Jesus video removed from Smithsonian after Catholic League Complains.

An outcry from the public, amplified by Capitol Hill legislators, over video art depicting the artist as Christ with ants crawling over him, forced the National Portrait Gallery to remove the work of art from the show, “Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture.”

Iconography is iconography. We as people often create it, worship it, give more value to it–than the real thing itself. Spirituality will always be about relationship. If anything (like a symbol or prop, as an icon) can enhance relationship in spiritual matters than it is useful. As long as the icon does not supersede the real thing. Then you end up with–well tombs really pretending to be gods. And that’s just plain dead and sad. No life in that at all, but pretense.

I think “blasphemy” is the correct term, that some would describe this artwork– although a human body that’s deceased as this artist is depicting, could possibly attract ants. Why get upset about that? Isn’t relationship more important than artwork–and what we as people imagine and make of ourselves in our art–we expect others to worship and even ‘follow?’ or twitter, facebook, blogs, TV, etc. This artist raises these questions today.

The furore today perhaps speaks volumes of society in general. In art terms–a response–is always what artists go for. So on that level ”A Fire in My Belly” by artist David Wojnarowicz did achieve that as a talking point.

It’s never an artists role to take sides in art–it’s their role to get people talking. To present, so audience can find their own truth in the Artwork presented from their own interpretation.

Thanks Ms Trescott–for an interesting story that isn’t boring from The Post, dare I say it–for once.

In addition to this story, the Wikileaks scandal is also rating hot in DC. Julianne Assange–is being positioned as being in deep, deep… yoghurt!

GOOD DAY – DAVID LYNCH FINDS HIS AUDIENCE BASE AGAIN WITH MUSIC

Think grey power’s version of Kanye West meets Eurythmics of Britain’s vocal arrangement–in auto-tune.

Film director and auteur of quirky films, David Lynch has diversified into music. Signed with Sunday Best Recordings of the UK, Lynch has a new album in the works. Here’s Good Day.

It features war and machine gun sounds. The lyrics are: “So tired of fear, So tired of the dark. Send me an angel, save me.”

Kinda weird music but a surprise for his many fans. He defies all conventions with his launch as a new music artist. Good on him!

L.A. Times reports (the electro-woozy sounding) Lynch as saying:“We’re working on a lot of things, and we hope to have an album soon,” Lynch says. “All of this to me is an experiment. We were calling it kind of a modern blues — music based on the blues. It’s led to all sorts of different things, but I really want to do a modern blues album.”

WORLD PEACE, POLYNESIAN MUSIC – HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE by ADEAZE

To love our enemies is where true love begins

Peace is like a harmonious river that always flows over the rocks and hate-hurled boulders of the human frailties and short-sighted misunderstandings of history’s wars–Horiwood 2010′s for World Peace

Two brothers of New Zealand ask one question in song. That question is very pertinent for all leaders of the civilized world today who claim to know what Peace is, when dishing out Peace Awards on a global stage.

It is a question penned by the Isle of Man born and Australia raised Gibb brothers (of The Bee Gees) of the UK:

How deep is your love?

Here’s Adeaze of New Zealand with that question with their performance as sung by brothers 9z and Viiz Tupa’i of Otara - South Auckland, in The Supercity of New Zealand.

FAVORITE KEY WORDS OF SOLANGE KNOWLES

One of America’s most famous members of The Twitter community, lists her moniker key words as being:

“water, melanin, bones, blood.”

Deep.

Solange recently tweeted that she went to the movies to see Love and Other Drugs starring Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal. Her next tweet was hysterical. It was the word:

“Nauseus”

To follow Ms. Knowles on Twitter, go here. I always enjoy her culturally versant world view and opinions within America. She so black, even tweetin most messages in the American literary art form of ebonics. Love that! Because she does have the confidence to express herself her way- referencing American history by her verbage  in a modern form, to me Solange Knowles is always an authentic American artist. Naturally.

SMILING MAORI YOUNG PEOPLE PERFORMING LIVE ARE SO VIBRANT

There’s just something about Maori young people singing and performing live in the poetic language of Te Reo Rangatira (the Language of Chiefs) with beautiful smiles that reminds you, these young leaders are from a very vibrant culture.

Love them! Can’t get enough of their visage and unbridled talents on display in Hollywood. Beautiful.

Oh and if you’re reading this post from Hollywood–no this really is not “lost footage from the director’s cut of Dances with Wolves–young people really perform like this every day in places like Waitangi or Roto-Vegas/ Rotorua or many other beautiful cities too. One of my favorite spots in seeing Maori perform is at the Tuhoe tribe’s Te Hui Ahurei o Tūhoe Festval. These young people are the best and they speak the language as their first language each day.

They’re also cinematic. Their first movie is in development. It’s humorously titled: Hambones at the Pork Bone Puha Hotel. Now this is THE movie for any A-List Hollywood actor to do a cameo in. It’s going to be both funny & fab!

They’re so authentic and beautiful in performance. The kids of Ngai Tuhoe also are amazing artists and their artworks (paintings) are so special. Deep. Meaningful. I purchased one, last time I was in attendance at this event.

If you must have your fix, of seeing Maori appear and perform live, finding out more about these two cities, is a good start when planning your global travel entertainment.

Culturally vibrant travel–is always adventurous and enriching to one’s worldview. You know it. Cheers!

Maori young people also add a lot to America’s diverse tourism industry, especially in Hawaii, President Obama‘s home state–all year round. Go here to check these Maori kids, who help America out. They’re such good selfless young people. Amazing!!! I love them.

Lyrics:

Ohh Ohh Ohh .. and I pray
I just cant sleep tonight
Knowing that things ain’t right
Its in the papers, its on the tv, its everywhere that I go
Children are crying
Soldiers are dying
Some people don’t have a home
But I know there’s sunshine behind that rain
I know there’s good times behind that pain, hey
Can you tell me how I can make a change
I close my eyes and I can see a better day
I close my eyes and pray
I close my eyes and I can see a better day
I close my eyes and pray

I lose my appetite, knowing kids starve tonight
Am I a sinner, cause my dinner is still on my plate
Ooo I got a vision, to make a difference
And its starting today

Cause I know there’s sunshine behind that rain
I know there’s good times behind that pain, hey

Heaven tell me how I can make a change
I close my eyes and I can see a better day
I close my eyes and pray
I close my eyes and I can see a better day

I close my eyes and pray
For the broken-hearted
I pray for the life not started
I pray for all the ones not breathing
I pray for all the souls in need.
I pray. Can you give em one today.
I just cant sleep tonight
Can someone tell how to make a change?

I close my eyes and I can see a better day
I close my eyes and pray
I close my eyes and I can see a better day
I close my eyes and I pray

I pray …

I close my eyes and pray

ENDS.

FOR THE LOVE OF KAPA HAKA – POI SWAY by HUKARERE GIRLS COLLEGE

I really should be promoting: forestry, fisheries, farming, fashion, film etc because all my future advertisers are there–but instead let’s celebrate the passion of Kapa Haka (or Maori cultural Glee Club today), for a diverse view in Hollywood.

A celebration of resilient free spirits, all singing in Te Reo Rangatira or The Language of Chiefs. The language is so poetic and pretty.

Here’s the performing art (performed live and living) of the poi ball dance of Hukarere Girls and Te Aute Boys colleges in Aotearoa/ New Zealand. Loves.

HONE TUWHARE’S NO ORDINARY SUN POEM – IN REMEMBRANCE OF WORLD EVENTS 11.24.10

No Ordinary Sun by Hone Tuwhare for lost Māwhera Miners & Korea North & South
Tree let your arms fall:
raise them not sharply in supplication
to the bright enhaloed cloud.
Let your arms lack toughness and
resilience for this is no mere axe
to blunt nor fire to smother.
Your sap shall not rise again
to the moon’s pull.
No more incline a deferential head
to the wind’s talk, or stir
to the tickle of coursing rain.
Your former shagginess shall not be
wreathed with the delightful flight
of birds nor shield
nor cool the ardour of unheeding
lovers from the monstrous sun.
Tree let your naked arms fall
nor extend vain entreaties to the radiant ball.
This is no gallant monsoon’s flash,
no dashing trade wind’s blast.
The fading green of your magic
emanations shall not make pure again
these polluted skies . . . for this
is no ordinary sun.
O tree
in the shadowless mountains
the white plains and
the drab sea floor
your end at last is written.

JESSICA SZOHR ON PLAYING A MESSED UP BROOKLYN ARTIST

Who: Jessica Szhor

Original claim to fame: Being cast in Gossip Girl

Now doing: Cover girl work, as depicted here for Savvy Magazine: the best of beauty, style and pop culture. Jessica is also landing lead roles in feature films, like Art Machine.

On her part in the film: “I play this artist who kind of had a messed up background and she expresses emotions in her art. It’s really cool. I’m filming all over Brooklyn.”

It’s always groovy to see young people evolve. Go kid!

New York Magazine’s ‘Industry News Round Up’ sheds more light on Art Machine‘s key players, noting: “Machine’s Young GunsJoseph Cross (MilkRunning With Scissors) and Jessica Szohr(Gossip Girl) are starring in the indie film Art Machine, which Doug Kerr is directing and currently shooting in New York. Cross plays “a child-prodigy painter on the verge of turning 18 who is suffering from bipolar disorder and needs to come up with an art show to end all art shows.” Szohr plays one of the “outlaw hipsters” Cross meets, “a pyrotechnic artist who is attracted to the prodigy, but as his manic madness grows, she becomes concerned for his safety.” Joey Lauren Adams (Big DaddyChasing Amy) plays Cross’s mom.

Cute. Sounds like a good young artsy screwball film then. Angst fused with art as ‘conflict being the essence of drama’ in an Aristotlean way, is bound to find its audience.

HOLLYWOOD HILLS AERIAL ART – 11.18.10

One of the kids in The Hollywood Hills was a little bored today.

Here’s some spontaneous aerial art, that makes living in California so much fun. A plane flew 90 degrees skyward from the Hollywood Hills today, painting the skyline as art, for all to see.

Nuts but thanks for creating and sharing an image of liberty today. It was most probably a complete waste of fuel, but it made me smile.

[As photographed form my place in West Hollywood today].

CROWN BUILDER IAIN CATHCART CREATES A QUIRKY LETTERBOX

“I just love letterboxes as they are your public interface containing information for you.”–Iain Cathcart, aritstic letterbox builder gives Facebook a run for its money in New Zealand wearing a Smokey The Bear hat.

Iain Cathcart is a builder from Northland. The very site in the world where Princess Diana chose to reveal Crown Prince William Windsor to the eyes of the world.

However, Ian’s winning letterbox pictured, has nothing to do with Prince William or British royalty. Here’s the novel story:

“A crown shaped ferro-cement letterbox has won New Zealand’s first quirky letter box competition.

Northland builder Iain Cathcart added libertia plants on top of the letterbox, impressing judges and organisers David and Geraldine Bayly.

The competition attracted about 30 entries from around the country, including Whangarei, Hamilton, Orewa, Helensville, Auckland, Whangaparoa, Makarau and Taranaki.

Mr Cathcart says his crown letterbox was meant to be a tulip flower, but he couldn’t work out the shape perfectly so it turned into a crown.

He won a three day walking holiday in north Auckland.”

Iain’s has had friends ask him to create a special letterbox just for them in appreciation of his quirky creations standing at the entrance way of their Kiwi castles too (ie: one’s hospitable Kiwi home). This man’s on a roll. Iain’s letterbox is very Graystone Mansion (Castle) on The Beverly Hills meets miniature functionality. But in Kiwi style, Graystone gets miniaturized to become more like a hobbit village letterbox Crown. Too cool.

Not bad bro! Made me smile.
