MC GOLD ON A FIELD OF DREAMS – REFLECTING ON A WEB ELLIS CUP WIN
It is hard to believe next week marks the year anniversary that the New Zealand All Blacks won the Rugby World Cup.
It was a highlight of the year. Few knew how the winning points would be scored (how would you know right?), and it took Stephen Donald who was a last minute recall, into the injured All Blacks side, to do the business.
He went from zero to hero in a moment that was like being selected from a bazar to do the job. The converted drop kick is the stuff school boys dreams of growing up in New Zealand are made of. Most Kiwi lads dream of playing rugby for the lads who wear NZ’s black jersey. Donald’s drop kick goal against France a moment of Kiwi rugby magic. He was the run on, dream maker – like an unlikely angel from the outfield.
It was a very surreal moment, realized from a team blessed with a golden rugby star touch: The Web Ellis Cup. The following year, they would cover and divert attention away from a multitude of political fumbles in the aftermath of torrid GFC economic years in New Zealand, with their star power the nation’s up factor. (But let’s not focus on that, this is a footie story).
Anyway, let’s take a look at Mr Donald then again, and what he has to say. Go here to support the journalist’s Jared Savage‘s sponsor and the article in full:
IN RED AND GREEN – STEPHEN DONALD VISITS HIS HOMETOWN OF WAIUKU
Your hometown is an important place. New Zealand hometowns are always about grass-roots, close community ties. It’s about the hood. Recent rugby world cup champion of the world, Stephen Donald (aka Beaver) returned to his hometown of Waiuku, to give his peeps a thank you and a big shout out.

ALL BLACKS 8. FRANCE 7 – WILLIAM WEB ELLIS CUP WINNERS 2011
The newspapers selling out at six stores before obtaining one at the 7th, reminded me of the fact, that New Zealand won the William Web Ellis Cup 2011.
Prop, Tony Woodcock scored a try for the All Blacks. Fourth-string flyhalf, Stephen Donald kicked a penalty goal, giving New Zealand’s rugby football team the leading edge at 8 against France’s close 7.
The Washington Post reports, “The All Blacks survived the last in a string of flyhalf injuries and beat France 8-7 in a gripping final Sunday to become the third two-time champion.” More here.
Photos WashPo and New Zealand Herald. The country is deliriously McFabbo-ed today and the French are understandably, a little sore.
My text was “Woot! We won. XXX.”

ESPN SCRUM HAS A KICKING RUGBY FOOTBALL PROFILE OF STEPHEN DONALD
Rugby football players going global via the USA with a Universal-Comcast & Rugby World Cup 2011 sporting tie up for USA broadcast of the sport, is all the rage at the moment. For an example of what I’m talking about, check out Stephen Donald’s sports profile on ESPN SCRUM. Very cool! Stephen lives in the same city of Papakura as Horiwood’s sister does and he proudly plays for the All Blacks rugby football team.

Amongst chatting up hot blondes, Harry was on his first official visit to Germany where The Bernauer Strasse Wall Memorial was a place where the Prince laid a wreath on a restored section of Berlin’s former East-West border, including the Wall and the area behind it known as the ‘death strip’ where many died trying to escape back in the day before U2 sung and the wall came tumbling down.
