SPORTS COACH PROFILE – STEVE HANSEN REFLECTS ON THE YEAR ADJUSTING TO A NEW JOB – DECEMBER 2012 PRESS
“I don’t have a trophy cabinet, no… they will probably collect some dust somewhere or I will give them to someone.”
“A lot people obviously didn’t expect me to handle the media the way I have… there were a lot of question marks, I guess, and I think we have answered quite a lot of those. I am actually quite proud of that, quite pleased with it.
“I think it is an attitude shift. When you are the assistant you have got a different role and I was probably a bit over-protective of people. But as the head coach you lead with the media and it allows you take it in a direction you want to take it in.”
–Steve Hansen talks adjusting to a new job situation in a harrowing personal year. Humility seems like the main tone of how Steve got through 2012.

NZRFU’S LEGACY OF GOOD RUGBY COACHING DESIGN – A REMINDER TO BE HUMBLE WHILE CELEBRATING ACHIEVEMENT
“Blokes like Hansen, Graham Henry and Steve Tew owe, in part, their jobs and accolades and even a [rugby] knighthood to [Robbie] Deans. His brilliant Crusaders empire propped up New Zealand rugby when much else was failing.”
–Chris Rattue pays tribute to a coach that built rugby in New Zealand in today’s New Zealand Herald newspaper. CR acknowledges how the science part of rugby knowledge, coaching and best team achievement is not only built upon by a nation – it is also built upon by leading players and coaches discoveries in the sport. At best it is both evolved and also re-mixed from those who went before. The best coach reads the opposition, re-mixes from the wealth of rugby’s triumphs and above all, backs the team of current players whose moment it is to shine and lead on the pitch. (more…)

ZZ READ – GRATITUDE IN THE EFFORT TO WIN

“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals. Winning is not everything, but the effort to win is. Our favorite attitude should be gratitude. You are the only person on earth who can use your ability.”

RUGBY NEWS: ENGLAND 38. NEW ZEALAND ALL BLACKS 21
Rugby News: England 38. New Zealand All Blacks 21.
New Zealand were outclassed by a smart, committed and creative English side at Twickenham’s famous rugby park in a game that brought New Zealand rugby back down to earth after a year of World Cup Champion team momentum. New Zealand coach’s Steve Hansen said:
“I would just like to congratulate England on a tremendous performance. They thoroughly enjoyed their victory today and they should be very proud of what they achieved. They played some magnificent football. At 15-14 we certainly asked questions of them and they responded as a good team. We don’t have an excuse – we just got beaten by a better side,” he said.
“The key thing I was thinking was that we need to take control here as the All Blacks were ahead 15-14 after scoring the team’s second try. “I think we might have missed a kick off and made a mistake and we certainly made a defensive mistake on the far side which really punished us and then their next try was off our own mistake. We had free-kick and tapped it – we didn’t need to tap it. But when things don’t go your way you end up making decisions that are not quite right.

“I don’t know that we played well. But were we allowed to? I’m disappointed, but that is the game and you have to accept it. We had 80 minutes to do our best and on this occasion we got beaten by a side that was better than us.
“To my own side I’m very proud of what they have achieved – I know they have fallen over today – but I think once we get over the disappointment, they should be able to reflect on what they have done [all season] and they have done very well.
“We have introduced nine outstanding rookies who have played very well. The senior guys have played well and it has been a good year for the All Blacks,” Steve Hansen said.
Scoreboard: Daniel Carter’s boot went a little awry as well – missing two penalties he normally wouldn’t to give the impression things weren’t as they should be in the All Black camp.
England 38 (B. Barritt, C. Ashton, M. Tuilagi tries; O. Farrell 4 pens, DG; F. Burns 2 pens) New Zealand 21 (J. Savea (2), K. Read tries; D. Carter 2 cons; A. Cruden con)

For Carter it’s a balancing act. He thinks he’ll be ready for the All Blacks final test on the European Tour though.

The UK tabloids, sports section, are loving the Andrew Hore bad behavior rugby story for the New Zealand All Blacks European Tour show in Wales 2012. Check it out. RUGBY NEWS: NEW ZEALAND ALL BLACKS 33. WALES 10.
Rugby News: New Zealand’s rugby All Blacks last performance on the rugby football pitch against Wales. The result? The All Blacks 33. Wales 10.
Wales 10 (S. Williams, A. Cuthbert tries). New Zealand 33 (L. Messam, T. Woodcock, L. Romano tries; A. Cruden 2 cons, 5 pens).
Aaron Cruden who stood in for legendary NZ kicker, Daniel Carter performed well too, the duration of the test. The depth of talent in the Steve Hansen coached side is evident. Quick ball from the AB’s was a disntictive aspect of the New Zealand side’s winning play.

BREAKTHROUGH RUGBY POP ART
In Maori mythology we know of Ranginui (the Skyfather) and Papatuanuku (the Earth that nurtures us all).
This contemporary work by Marco Innocenti of Italia that features rugby icons and ancient historical references fused into one artwork, reminds me of sky and earth in tandem synergy. Apia Samoa’s Jerry Collins is playing the sky.
