Native American Indians

THE TEEN WHO ROCKS THE NORTH AMERICAN BOX OFFICE 2013

Taylor Lautner Alex Meraz and The Lads of Native American India Cinematic Representation

Once upon a time, a Mormon housewife, conservative mother sat down at her family table and wrote some books. Her vision would re-introduce a cast of Native American Indian actors into a film franchise series. Americans would be conscious of these stars again.

The franchise would need its own studio to spring up in Los Angeles to house the new stars’ talent and make the author’s books into the films.

Two stars in particular would stand tall, years later. This year Taylor Lautner has been named the sixth highest bankable star of the North American box office by Forbes magazine. When I see Taylor, I don’t know whose more amazing. His family, Taylor, or Stephenie Meyer for writing him into a visible presence in cinema. A cool story.

TAYLOR LAUTNER, TEEN ACTION MAN 48th MOST VOTED STAR 2012

He was selected for author Stephenie Meyer‘s book series, to bring it to life onscreen. The teen’s story is now legendary. Taylor Lautner, the athlete, action star, Native Amerian box office movies champion of the USA is the 47th most popular star of 2012.

It is very cool, Meyer wrote Native American Indian characters into her books. Why Taylor exists today as a star. Teens need an overarching structure that can launch them for years and sustain their employment and careers. Meyer did that for this young man.

LEGAL ENTERTAINER MAI CHEN ON RIGHT BRAIN SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY MIND SETS OF ECONOMIC INNOVATIVE GROWTH FOR KIWI WINNERS

Legal expert Mai Chen has been doing some way cool press lately as a writer and talk show talent in and around the law. Never boring, always entertaining, philisophically interesting and enlightening with empathy, Chen offers her latest thoughts to up New Zealand culture’s innovative hotness.

What did she say?  Mai was really good on The Close Up show with broadcaster Mark Sainsbury yesterday.

In journalism guest commentary news, her latest article in the New Zealand Herald is titled: Olympic Effort for a Better Future. (Parts I particularly like in the bold font).

“The Olympic Games is the reason my family emigrated to New Zealand. My father had trained the Taiwan gymnastics team for both the Tokyo and the Mexico games and in 1971 he was headhunted to train the New Zealand gymnastics team. (Wow!)

As a result I grew up in a household where the wisdom of top athletes was seen as the key to success in all areas of life. I was reminded of this last year when, in the midst of my own marathon effort to write a book while running a law firm, Dad began coaching me with Olympic insights once again.

The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful – will win,” said Roger Bannister. “Your heart must clear the bar first,” said world champion pole vaulter Sergey Bubka. “The subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between reality and imagination,” he reminded me, quoting Billy Mills, a rank outsider who blitzed the field to win the 10,000m in Tokyo.

The coaching helped me not to quit when working seven days a week for two years really got to me.

So while I am glued to the screen for these two weeks, I am not just interested in stories about relentless training schedules, but also the back stories of the Olympic athletes, about mental toughness, and creativity and innovation.

Just think about Oscar Pastorius, South African sprinter and a double amputee, who runs on artificial legs.

[Makata Taka Hela aka Mr. Billy Mills - world champion Olympian 1964. Photo - Ray Wyatt.Net].

We need an [athletes] mindset to propel our export industries into a position of strength on world markets. And we need it to solve tough policy and law reform issues we face, like keeping superannuation affordable, addressing Maori claims to water, or structuring our domestic broadband market to enable Kiwis to compete abroad from here. (True dat. So could be improved by real broadband developers not media posturing posers!) (more…)

SAL SERBIN ON “ED WINDDANCER IS NOT KEVIN COSTNER ALREADY, OKAY?! “

[Photo - Sal Serbin - may-jah-ly p*ssed off Indian]

In Bad Ass cultural appropriation news from the land that brought us the movie Avatar comes this strange story of Ed Winddancer, cultural appropirator of all things Native American Indian.

He’s not Kevin Coster trying to win an Oscar. He’s not Trace Cyrus with a new Ashland High album titled Geronimo. So who is this tanned clown comedian?

Well… according to the UK Daily Mirror (where I immediately go to get all of my Native American Indian news straight away!!! Cos, why not?!):

“Ed Winddancer, 55, (pictured), from Florida, performs in full Native American dress with warpaint and feathers. Sal Serbin, whose grandfather fought in the Battle of Little Bighorn, turns up at his gigs holding a sign which reads ‘Cultural thief’.

Serbin claims Winddancer is ‘dangerous’ for using traditional practices he doesn’t understand.

Stranger things have happened in Hollywood. I mean… Brad Pitt began work as an actor by dressing up in a chicken costume for fast food chain, El Polo Loco. Maybe Ed Winddancer should get a job with them instead?!

For the heavy politics of cultural appropriation on the Indigenous Peoples of America’s psyche, read more here. “Rick Bird” and “Sun Dance” are some of the key words in this story. Serbin is of Sarasota Indian descent of the Sioux peoples.

Who will win this bout – Sal Serbin (Real Indian) or Ed (Wannabe Injun or… American Cultural Artist playing Dress Ups?). And is Sal just a little bit jelly that Ed looks a bit more fitter and healthier than he does at 55?

Also check out the Sarasota Indian Festival website links here and here and here. Peace!

CAN’T BE TAMED – ACTION TEEN TAYLOR LAUTNER’S JANUARY 2012 PHOTO SHOOT

Outtakes from Total Film show young Taylor Lautner keeping Hollywood’s teen action movies genre - in TOW.
The actor of Ottawa and Potawatomi Native American Indian descent’s next movie role is currently in post-production where Lautner appears in Incarceron playing ”a young imprisoned boy named Finn where he and the Warden’s daughter, Claudia, find a key that holds the way to freedom for both of them.
Sounds intense.
Hollywood’s highest paid teen actor originally got his break acting on The Bernie Mac show. Since then there’s been no looking back for Lautner. An amazing teen story.

SITTING BULL – A STONE IN MY HEART – A MUST WATCH DOCUMENTARY?

Right now, I am watching the documentary Sitting Bull: A Stone in My Heart from Aotearoa New Zealand. The documentary film was made by director John Ferry.

Watch it for an education into how we should respect Indigenous Peoples of The World more.

The whole green movement, is taken from this worldview – where the earth’s resources are living family members, so to speak. Though, an Indigenous People’s environmental take on the world, hasn’t always been seen until much later by opportunist colonialists, Indigenous Peoples have always been smart people in their struggles of resistance, for a cause.

Their worldview concerning the environment is the best known worldview to preserve the planet today.

Anyway, according to Lillimar “producers of the award-winning films Sitting Bull: A Stone in My Heart about the legendary Lakota Sioux chief, and Contrary Warrior: The Life and Times of Adam Fortunate Eagle, a documentary about the legendary Native American activist, author spiritual leader who orchestrated the Alcatraz Island occupation in 1969″ these two documentaries are their show piece docos.

I like the fact that film companies make meaningful historical docos that speak to us all. History reveals that when nations look after their Indigenous People, they in turn are rewarded with fortitude and goodwill.

HOLLYWOOD HUMOR – LOUIX DOR DEMPRIEY aka BHAGAVAN SRI PRANANADA IS DOING WAY TOO MUCH

Louix Dor Dempriey (Bhagavan Sri Prananada) has his glossy postcards all around Hollywood today. His postcards promise ‘Be transformed by Louix’s darshan and drink of His [sic] ageless wisdom over the course of five intimate and engaging days spent with this spiritual Master.

Location – The Lodge at Torrey Pines, La Jolla, CA.’

Um… I think it was The Lodge part, when there’s not a Native American Indian in sight of this rhetoric … that made me go… nah. Lol! God bless America anyway! It takes all kinds… Here in the USA Native American Indians are some of the most spiritually aware people I’ve met. Perhaps Louix learned from them? :)

At least Louix is not slowing down on his marketing budget allocation though. It is LA after all. It is culturally appropriate here, to market oneself at this level. That’s too funny!

And isn’t Louix like tots rocking out with India’s guru swagger right now? yep! Deepak Chopra must be gutted. Maybe just a bit. Obviously, Louix has his followers.

ROWLEY HABIB – MAORI POETRY FOR THE YOUNG – TE AO HOU AND LAKOTA INDIAN HISTORY VIA HOLLYWOOD – 2.14.11

Visuals – FeatherKorotangi Series 5 by James F Ornsby. – NYC.EDU

Verbage - Two Poems by Rowley Habib – Te Ao Hou

TO THE HAND OF WOMAN

The Plea of a young writer

Take my hand and lead me through the thicket
To the mountain’s crest, where the snow
Is pure. So my thoughts be like the snow
And below let me see the ocean and the open
Land caressed with mists of haziness
Azure and wide. Like the world before me
Ready to be drunken by these eyes
And more yet. Lay me back on the snows pure
Blanket of whiteness, my being forever
Conscious of your nearness. My nostrils
Full of the scent of you.
O take my hand. I am lost without
The hand of woman soft and full
Of tenderness. Ever yielding to the passion of my call
Take my hand for should an inspiration
Come I’ll be like something flat and very dead

O MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS

We were not so far apart you and I
When the thunder broke from the blackened sky
We were not so far apart
And when the echo rolled away
Deep down in the slanting day
We dreamed. Or when the lightning struck
Behind the drawn blind
Not I alone rushed heaven-wards
In the wake it left behind
No, we were not so far apart, we
When the waters rushed with mad glee
Down the garden path
Mine was not the only dream
Washed beyond the pantry window
Like some desire in a far off flooded stream

Visual – Lakota Women, Carlisle Indian School.
