new films: there’s an over-emphasise in news on drones as a cause of fear, destruction, wastage, terror, invasion in most nation’s news today.
instead: drones can be used in groovy ways to preserve life, the planet, the environment… rather than take from it, or destroy it.
what nz filmmaker can make the first ever film made entirely from drones camera’s footage? that would be awesome at an IMAX theater. in 3D if the director must. a clever indie filmmaker, could string a storyline together and do it. it’s very Hitchcock, as in birds, just through the birds eye-view instead. Naomi Watts, Ashton Kutcher, Reese Witherspoon, Matthew McConaughey and Amanda Seyfried are joining Nicole Kidman and a bevvy of other stars to promote low budget indie films at Sundance Film Festival.
Sundance is the ongoing vision of pioneer mega-producer Robert Redford and his team. This year a focus on the indie film festival is the same as any other year of the festival. That being: “what is a movie star?” A movie star [on screen] is really someone who has the ability to make real human stories come to life while playing decent roles. Sundance always achieves that each year. (more…)
It takes all kinds to make the world go around. Why I LOVE and cherish being alive. Kids like Scott are a reminder for us older folks, to take youth seriously in their lifetime.
He was a Maori Prince, a Viking of The Sun. She, a Chinese Princess from the Ming Dynasty.
In a new horizon, in a mythical land on a new frontier, they were cast in an epic war to fight for their love.
What the world needs to see is 3D mythological cinema of this nature in New Zealand.
3D Chaori Cinema (Asian-friendly Maori action movie cinema) is a $1 billion a year generating industry waiting to happen in NZ. In my mind’s eye I see it growing in New Zealand. It supports the already well established 3D cinema of NZ. It just makes movies a lot quicker for the growing Asian movie market of the world.
It needs a development fund to get started. Russell Crowe the first person in the world of Maori descent to win an Oscar and Hollywood’s Lucy Liu are giving a similar concept a go in the film, Man with Iron Fists. We need to move more into 3D with Chaori cinema texts in and from New Zealand. Cliff Curtis, a Maori actor has also been a success starring in Asian nations in an Asian action star mythological film.
We have enough trial models on display in aspects of this genre to really go for it and develop it further. Chaori cinema is another strand of cinema to be developed in New Zealand to sit alongside what Sir Peter Jackson, John Barnett and newcomers like James Cameron have already achieved from New Zealand.
It is a brand new cinema strand though, that can only make the overall package more attractive when perceiving New Zealand as a stand out filmmaking nation location. It makes sense to develop Chaori cinema and Maori cinema that is Asian-markets friendly, more.
It’s an authentic visual expression of New Zealand for the wider world’s markets.
In the Kiwi dream, The Child asks: What is beauty?
Then The Bard sagely replies:
Beauty is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty hand stretched forth,
But rather a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted.
Beauty is not the image you would see nor the song you would hear,
But rather an image you see though you close your eyes and a song you hear though you shut your ears.
Beauty is not the sap within the furrowed bark, nor a wing attached to a claw,
But rather a garden forever in bloom and a flock of angels for ever in flight.
. . . But you are life and you are the veil.
–Khalil Gibran poetry, Lebanon.
Peace!

Photo: Taiaha art and Mau Rakau action characters are already teaching America’s children each day on TV. The merch that goes with these characters and the revenue of ad placement between their image is kinda a big deal in the USA. We don’t value it enough in NZ or give it a decent enough chance perhaps. Yet the world could.
Here’s a picture I snapped in 2010 in West Hollywood where taiaha art is not only on TV it also features around the city of Hollywood too.
Evolving Maori Cinema in New Zealand’s film industry:
Some global economic developments are occurring in the world of film. New markets are opening up in China. Canada’s best movie maker and world box office record holder James Cameron recently said within five years China’s movie market could rival the Wests. Including Chinese actors in movie ideas is a key part of Cameron’s strategy to evolve his brand of films into China. Actors from China will be sequed into future Avatar sequels, Cameron’s box office gold at present.
In New Zealand our economic leaders have identified China as being a key trading partner of New Zealand in the future.
So the question today is: How can Maori action films find cohesion with Asian markets love of movies that tell mythological stories, just like Maori do in legends Maori have been telling for centuries in New Zealand in a similar way China has been telling their legends in China for many centuries more? (more…)
My economic plan is to get a job soon. I’ll keep you posted on the experiences of that in New Zealand as I go.
About ten months ago an MP (New Zealand politician) said they would help place me in a job. They said “New Zealand film” was where they saw my expertise being most used for New Zealand. I never heard back about that job.
Both The Examiner and Collider report that Oscar winners Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will produce a new movie for Warner Bros Studios together. Race to The South Pole features content of the race between Englishman Robert Falcon Scott and Norwegian Roald Amundsen in the Southernmost point on the Earth.
The movie plotline goes: Girl meets boat. Boat meets girl. The boat is a gift. They fall in love with the ocean. She wants to sail the world. The problem is, she’s 13. Dutch authorities say she’s too young. A legal battle ensues. Then at 15, she sets sail.
Now 16, Laura Dekker of New Zealand, Dutch and German connections is off to shop her story for a movie deal.
New York and Sundance film festival are on the adventurous teen’s film producing project, agenda.
So far, I like the story.
I hope the film will convey her winning chutzpah.
[Definitely a Larry Ellison (as EP) style of film to jump through the hoops]. Go kid. :)

Semi-True Hollywood script ideas penned by New Zealand politicians combatting racist censoring and design:
If New Zealand politicians in The Beehive were to form a film production company and write comedy films, we would send the few Maori-Kiwi MP’s into bat first, to really loosen the economic gridlock up. The production house could be called “Behave Films.”
We’d probably choose Hone Harawira to write the first script, because he’s always controversial, has no fear, doesn’t lie and doesn’t care what people think of what he says. Always a good basis for social justice as well as comedic appeal too. Laughing at ourselves is good.
Hone’s film would probably tackle the unacceptable poverty divide that exists. The divide is incredibly racist. Banking flows, via political wingmen have been the cause of this gross scouge of NZ society in it’s current form. So, we probably do need Hone Harawira’s magic to bring attention to this greedy disease that has crippled NZ society’s economic growth being more common place as well as wealth being more evenly distributed in the form of adequate job creation too.
What would Hone’s film be though? Well, the newspaper suggests the idea could involve Facebook marketing. Hone’s movie idea could be titled: Little House Nigg*rs on the Remaining Prairie.
Good Lord, and it’s only Thursday in NZ, not even the weekend. The political scene in Wellywood is like, totally on fire today. Too funny.
Other H2 news can be read: Here & Hia. Never dull. Always entertaining.
[If you look at farming flows or where banking system flows of the economy have gone to in the last 7-10 years, metaphorically Hone is absolutely right in raising concerns about censoring Maori in the political system in the way current politics has been designed and rigged at this moment of writing. He makes me laugh in pointing out the illegaity of what is going on! Too honest! What Hone indicates is illegal and unconstitutional political practice that needs a good flushing out to be frank. It's certainly a refreshing change to dishing out the tin in rehashed movie roles like All Quiet on The Western Front. Geez! It's 2012!].
Laura Dekker arrived into port last night. The sixteen year old teen of German and Dutch lineage plans to finish her schooling in NZ – the country of her birth – then sail at the Olympics wearing the silver fern.
Dekker is neck-and-neck today for the no.1 Kiwi position on the website with Lisa Carrington, World Champion athlete. (more…)
Laura Dekker is 16 and loves sailing the world in a yacht. The teen sailor has recently returned to Whangarei City, Northland New Zealand, the place of her birth. I was in the USA when Dekker sailed solo around the world, so it’s cool to read about the kid’s achievements. In the USA, Oprah was featuring the Aussie teen Jessica Watson doing the same thing. It’s good to see Whangarei City has a part-time star in young Dekker too. Teen girls and boats, gotta do.
For now Dekker is making Whangarei City ocean waters her home. Dekker is of German and Dutch persuasion via her lineage.
Martin Tasker has an interview with young Dekker at the video link above. He notes how movie interest in Dekker is being discussed. Always difficult to do when telling a solo story. Characters have to be birds, dolphins, whales that reoccur as motifs. Act 1, Act 2 and Act 3 of the script have to center on overcoming obstacles. Maybe even a bit of twitter action could be included. Also of importance is to mirror someone who went before. For example, pay homage to one hero, in Dekker’s own story. One person who inspired the teen yachtie could feature in the story too from history.
The script also needs to end on a note that allows a 16 year old kid, room to still be able to breathe in life, outside of the movie. Therein lies the art of a movie done well.
I could so write Dekker’s script. I’d borrow heavily from the Tom Hanksstory though, just do it better, quicker, more editing. :) However, let’s see what her marketing team and sponsors have come up with. Go kid! :)
She’s exicting. A living action star. Dekker reminds me of a young Anna Paquin, just on a boat, not a hit HBO TV show. She has major potential!
[Thanks for the sports news].

Looking at our most voted trends today, from a Hollywood casting perspective – perhaps Nicole Kidman should make a movie with The Rock? That’s the audience vibe today.

Gotta say it: It’s good to see Tobey Maquire and Tom Hardy are graduating in actors school to start producing their own movies. (Leo, well – he’s a walking production and always has been). Unless a new generation rise up and produce stories that they see relevant to their generation, then they run the risk of having their faces and names used in other peoples ideas of a story, while their own voices go unheard.
With that thought in mind of young people creating more, in order to grow their own economy with creative imagination and teamwork, more in line with what they personally believe, here’s a story:
Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Tom Hardy are teaming up to produce an untitled animal-trafficking drama set up at Warner Bros., sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
Hardy came up with the idea, inspired by friends who are former Special Forces operatives and went on to become anti-poaching fighters in South Africa and other nations.
The idea for the movie is in the conceptual stage. The movie script concept will focus on a ground war on poachers in the African savanna traversing the theme of how animal material ends up in the fashion houses of Paris.
It’s unclear whether DiCaprio, Maguire or Hardy would act in the movie. The trio of producers are now looking for a suitable screenwriter to create the bones of the script. Winning.–More@TheHollywoodCastingCall.

“Sports Psychology” is the fifth most read topic on the website over the last three days. A new trend. Must be Olympics time.
What can I write about those two buzz words today?
When I touched down in California, it was daunting for a farm raised, rural Kiwi kid. A city of 20 million people in a concrete jungle was what you saw outside of the aeroplane window of Los Angeles and its outlying districts when hitting LAX.
Perhaps in order to cope and adjust, one of the first things I did was buy a fridge magnet that had Arnold Schwarzennegar‘s suede on it, at Universal City. The magnet said: “My Governor can beat the crap out of your Governor.” Well, he sure did that to the California economy! (more…)
New Zealand Government Reviews Party Pills culture: “Manufacturers of herbal highs and recreational drugs will now be responsible for proving their products are safe before they can be sold.
Associate Minister of Health Peter Dunne said new regulations reverse “the onus of proof” by making all party pills and other herbal highs illegal until they are proved safe for sale.”
More timely Quality Control News at TVNZ. How will our Brit friends cope now?! :)
In other news, US ‘the enemy’ says Dotcom judge. Too funny. Peter Jackson wants a medal for resourceful filmmaking, going with a vision of parlaying more Oscars from his gift of cinematic auteurship. Can he get more films from a master novelist’s book. Also read: Jackson is not done with the Hobbits industry just yet.
Yeah – it’s like, there needs to be way more action scenes of adventurous scenes, so that the Hobbiton theme park can happen. So, I guess, you keep at it. Hobbits it just what the man does.
