FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS 26th OCTOBER 2012 – WORLD NEWS FROM A NEW ZEALAND PERSPECTIVE

[News footage coming soon]

New Zealand’s news is always exciting. Just the accents alone make the news fun. Here’s three windows to view as Friday Night Lights News via TVNZ. Miriama Kamo, Jim Hickey, Gregg Boyd and Jenny May have news and sports above.  Sports news was very lively. Auckland rugby girls won the game and Ngati Porou rugby was a real stand out of the festive grass roots spirit of what rugby in community consists of. Team enthusiasm.

At the time of writing, Obama leads Romney 64% to 39% with younger USA voters and in Greymouth township, Bernie Monk‘s face still show grief of tragic mining losses.  Greymouth is a beautiful town – and we wish the people of Greymouth the best. Simon, Wendy, Jim and Jenny May have the news above.

Sir Brian Lochore and All Blacks Legend, Michael Jones were both present to honor rugby great Sir Wilson Whineray‘s passing. Renee Wright has the 4.30 news take pic click.

THE MEALAMU FAMILY’S BIG DAY – A SPORTS CENTURY OF SAMOAN AWESOMENESS AND JOY FOR NEW ZEALAND RUGBY

Wynne Gray showcases Keven Melamu‘s rugby star in an interview, as Keven heads to the 100th test summit moment of his international sporting career. New Zealand is so proud of Keven, a gift from Samoa and Polynesian ancestry to our nation and the South Pacific. It’s all the Keven Mealamu show today. :)

Here’s Gray and Keven’s words (read here to support Wynne’s sponsor’s website).

- – -

“A shift to the Chiefs produced an elevation to the All Blacks end-of-year tour to Europe in 2002 and the start of his test career, against Wales.

“I remember being on the bench for the first test on that trip against England and it just felt like being a spectator,” he giggled.

“I was jumping up and down in excitement without thinking at some stage I might be needed.”

Mealamu debuted a few weeks later, then was picked for the 2003 World Cup squad.

“That was all amazing and you go from wanting to be an All Black to having a few games then thinking I can be really good at what I do here.

[Photo: Maia, Keven, Samuel and Latai Mealamu-KMBlog].

“It clicked that I love this enough to do it for a long time and I wanted to be darned good at it.”

ALL BLACK KEVEN MEALAMU JOURNEYS TO CENTURY TEST MILESTONE & STEVE HANSEN NAMES ABS TEST SIDE TO PLAY AUSTRALIA

“You are the valiant bea’s knees” Rugby News: All Black rugby football star, Keven Mealamu is about to hit 100 tests playing for the New Zealand All Blacks football side. Freaking incredible amazing. :)

Despite the football beat ups and general thuggery on the body, Keven only looks 12 (don’t know how he does it), he smiles lots too and he also sells pizza in his business, like Mitt Romney of the USA. It’s just that Keven looks more like Barack Obama than Mitt, though Keven sells pizza too. Keven is only the third man to ever reach the century milestone wearing the black jersey. Read up. A-List rugby’s league.

So, what did Keven’s winning coach say: “Kevvy is a hugely respected man, not only in the All Blacks and New Zealand rugby but also in his wider community,” Steve Hansen said.

“He is a key leader in the team and one of the true gentlemen of New Zealand rugby.”–Reporting Richard Knowler.

Compliments don’t come finer than that. Manners in tact with strength and staying power.

Steve Hansen’s All Blacks team to play Australia at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday, kick-off 11pm (NZT), is: Israel Dagg, Cory Jane, Conrad Smith, Ma’a Nonu, Hosea Gear, Dan Carter, Aaron Smith, Kieran Read, Richie McCaw (c), Liam Messam, Sam Whitelock, Brodie Retallick, Charlie Faumuina, Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock. Reserves: Andrew Hore, Owen Franks, Luke Romano, Victor Vito, Piri Weepu, Aaron Cruden, Ben Smith.

Vintage Rugby: The Ice Man – Michael Jones: Known for his tireless work rate and ability to be seemingly all over the field at once, Michael Jones will be remembered as one of the best that ever played the game. He is the only forward to be awarded Player of the Tournament, which is testament to his presence and notable influence.–Sports MSN.

OUR OUTRIGGER CANOES OF SCIENCE, EDUCATION, INNOVATION FOR POLYNESIAN & PASIFIKA YOUTH POPULATIONS OF THE WORLD – NEW ZEALAND SPIRIT RISING & INVESTING IN PI YOUTH

Because science, innovation, education are New Zealand peoples spirit - of our strong outrigger canoe culture of navigatable adventurous and creative discoveries into new horizons of destiny and change too:

In investing R&D capital into our future innovative inventors of sustainability and peace news:

In my mind I see, children all throughout the South Pacific, even up to the Marshall Islands into even the island of Guam, maybe Vietnam too. They each have a laptop and tablet each. On the internet they are taught curriculum subjects from New Zealand.

Their learning is accelerated and a generation of Polynesian (and Asian?) children arise, supported by their New Zealand friends nearby and afar, to allow the potential of Polynesia’s youth to be all they will be, for the gifts in their lives the world will need to be stronger, smarter, more creative – in the years to come. If we all do this for them that’s so going to happen.

This is the burden that sits very strongly on me today. I really want to see our groovy and unique white, Pakeha New Zealanders do it, just to teach the world what cool New Zealand citizens look like as architects of the world – and to push back the powers of greed, on our Island dwelling Polynesian friends.

Although we admire the braun of Polynesian peoples natural dna (Jonah Lomu storms to mind) - it is their Peaceful spirit (most days), their respect for their elderly, their creativity so rich yet largely untapped, their spiritual gifts, the notable and noble warmth of heart, a trusting innocence in the good of the wider world and their unique thoughts that dwell within their minds; that we will need to see more of in the world, twenty years out from this point. We need to invest more in it.

JEANETTE THOMAS INTERVIEWS SIR JOHN KIRWAN – AUCKLAND BLUES RUGBY FOOTBALL COACH

Sir John Kirwan was on TV this morning with Jeanette Thomas. When I think of Sir John, I think of my mom sitting with Michael Jones‘ mom, Aunty Maina, at the rugby football park in Northland, in the test match where MJ & JK were both whipper snappers, going for a rugby dream.

You’ve never heard Maori and Samoan mums scream and shout louder in the stands. Nerve-wracking days, both MJ & JK would be successful in being selected for the All Blacks team. It was to be no ordinary team. When Michael got in the All Blacks it was a huge shift in New Zealand consciousness.

The Iceman went on to lift achievement for young people all over New Zealand and the world. Along with Zinzan Brooke, Sir John didn’t do too badly either. A shift abroad proved his worth as a coach and sports brand of entertainment.

Jeanette Thomas has the interview of the Italy, Japan (and now Auckland City) rugby coach talking family, teenagers and having his sights set on a ten-year-career as a coach in New Zealand.

Messages: (Humble) - ”Ten years coaching, then I plan to exit.” “Don’t want to die with music in me.” “Taking a Sir title is not about the title, it is about the reasons.” “Incredibly honored, incredibly humbled, I feel now I have to live up to it.” “If I can help one person through fear, I was a Sir,” he says (paraphrased).

Thomas describes Sir John Kirwan as being a living legend. Watch interview.

The legendary 1987 All Blacks Team included: John Gallagher (Wellington), Craig Green (Canterbury), Joe Stanley (Auckland), John Kirwan (Auckland); Warwick Taylor (Canterbury), Grant Fox (Auckland), David Kirk (Auckland); Wayne Shelford (North Harbour); Michael Jones (Auckland), Gary Whetton (Auckland), Murray Pierce (Wellington), Alan Whetton (Auckland); Steve McDowell (Auckland), Sean Fitzpatrick (Auckland) and John Drake (Auckland), Andy Dalton (Counties), Richard Loe (Waikato), Zinzan Brooke (Auckland), Bernie McCahill (Auckland), Frano Botica (North Harbour) and Bruce Deans (Canterbury).

Rugby was so much fun during these years. Crazy times of sport. It wasn’t so rigid and there was more passion in the game, just for the love of the sport on display. These lads inspired a nation during crucial years where our culture evolved. They were my childhood heroes. The dream team of dreambuilders. With only two channels on TV to choose from, radio commentators in action, no cell phones of any kind and no internet in those days to distract an audience, their celebrity was huge and unparalleled in New Zealand in their spokespersonship roles. They were the voice that shaped a culture. Their words mattered. As a result, they were everyone’s heroes.

What they said and did would shape a nation with depth and meaning. Like all Kiwis of my age-group, in part I too am the product of their character, humour, zest for life and the many gifts of culture that they created on the go, and gave us all as their people.

I could write a book about each one to explain all the pictures of culture they created and shared with their avid audience. They weren’t paid for what they gave, yet they willingly showed generosity of spirit and gave it anyway. Why they are still our bright heroes today. Their ‘books’ they all authored without credit, are a nation of Kiwis. They are some of the finest entertainers New Zealand has ever witnessed, the calibre of whom has rarely been seen since. It’s difficult to know what to say to this generation of stars that the local neighborhoods of New Zealand produced, except Thank you for making us Kiwi too – and a cohesive distinctive society of fun loving people with heart and soul.

AUSTRALIA AS AN IMMIGRATION HAVEN – 150,000 STRANDED IN BANGLADESH FLOOD – RUGBY INJURIES OF WORLD CUP WINNING ALL BLACKS

Three things in News Today:

a) Australia‘s Christmas Islands have a second boat of immigrants needing to be rescued.–123 rescued, 1 dead. Julia Gillard‘s words.

b) 150,000 are caught up in flooding in Bangladesh.–Visit Global Drowning Fund to make a difference.

c) Rugby World Cup Winners’ injuries and the price of rugby’s fame in the game of hard knocks.–Watch Grant Fox, Michael Jones & Joseph Stanley & Son.

Injuries due to sporting prowess of stars feeling as if they need to keep up expectations of a nation’s hopes and dreams, in a game that is like a national religion of sports… and lives being lost through poor political planning, lack of water and food in far off nations, are the themes of these stories today.

VINTAGE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLASSIC – MICHAEL JONES

Tim Tebow‘s rising star in the USA reminds me today of Michael Jones, a basketballer who turned to rugby football. MJ’s rugby football skills and athleticism are legendary. The UK Telegraph provides this picture today, noting:

“Michael Jones, the former New Zealand offside flanker, was once described as “almost the perfect rugby player.”"

What everyone appreciated about Michael, similarly to Te Bowie of the Denver Broncos, is that Jones faith and spirit reflected a depth of life – many people knew they needed. That being healthy spiritual pursuits.

RUGBY LEGEND MICHAEL JONES, GROWS JOBS AND SAMOAS ECONOMY WITH NONI JUICE EXPORTS

One of New Zealand’s greatest rugby players, Michael Jones, is a lad whose never forgotton his mother’s family roots in Savai’i, Samoa. Jones Jr. has in fact turned his eyes to his mother’s native village of Samoa, to export Noni juice’s elixir health properties from this Island paradise. Noni juice keeps you younger, longer and healtheir too – a juice, Hollywood appreciates offering Noni juice to be added to coffee at Whole Foods barrista bars in California, for example.

Recently, I posted about The Iceman’s brother, Derek Jones (a fan of Nesian cool music exports from Auckland, NZ), when Michael’s bronze statue arrived at Eden Park, Auckland. See the arrival here.

Today when I was reading the newspaper at Serafin cafe in Mount Eden, on a page of New Zealand’s countrywide newspaper, I couldn’t help notice, Michael’s face in the biz section of the newspaper. Michael media placement was squashed to the side of the news coverage page layout, having to compete with Eric Watson‘s company news about Bendon lingerie investments merging with an Aussie owned undies company called Pleasure State. There’s money to be made in elastic, cotton, lace and hired model’s images on cardboard packaging then.

In addition, Michael’s (newsprint) mug also had to compete against an effort to lift gold’s current global market value (about US $1900 an ounce, at the time of Libya’s toppling) by using the profile of an ex Telecom CEO lady, Theresa Gatting who sunk her Telecom million CEO perks portfolio into gold once she exited that government pet telecommunications giant in 2007. Both stories made for an amusing read, of anyone who was not trying to feed Polynesian children daily in South Auckland (the price of food in NZ has risen 15% under the current government, in the last year, without pay increases rising/ or employment opportunities that are decent/ rising proportinately to accommodate such costs -an oddity in a self sufficient nation, known as an Aotearoa Eden-like paradise). For example, in New Zealand’s backyard, we really have to admit, that “Gardeners are US” is a motto for many Kiwi families as the only way forward it seems–again, why I Michael’s vision of growing jobs in Samoa today via gardening and sales–shows how bio-pharmaceuticals (perhaps even minus the drugs) grown in one’s garden–is still a smart way to grow an economy. It’s rooted in Samoan owned earth… and is not a bad strategy for longevity. He’s a legendary rugby fighter after all!

The story follows with verbage by Karyn Scherer and a photo by Sarah Ivey asking if Chinese funding for Samoa is really a toxic plank, or a good deal?. (more…)

OMG! DEREK JONES BRO’S RUGBY STATUE ARRIVES AT EDEN PARK

I kid you not… Derek Jones brother’s statue has arrived at Eden Park in time for the Rugby World Cup.

So… “under wraps,” yet definitely a niko try-scoring bronze likeness.

RUGBY LEGEND MICHAEL JONES BRINGS CARL’S JR BURGERS TO NEW ZEALAND

For many rugby enthusiasts, rugby football player Michael Jones, remains their most favorite rugby star of all time.

Once in Hollywood, when a statue had been made and cast in bronze in Michael “The Iceman” Jones honor, I blogged from a Hollywood Starbucks, that Michael’s mom was quite famous for her warm hospitality and her faith. Aunty Maina could have quite easily had a cafe of her own. It would have been packed. her big heartedness was always a real draw.

I thought these thoughts that cold Hollywood day (it was near snowing in Burbank that eve) while blogging and looking out the window at a Carl’s Jr. burger joint opposite me. Today, Michael Jones and his brother in law are actually bringing Carls Jr. to New Zealand. Go here to read more. Too funny! :)

Carl’s Jr.’s guacamole burger… is my favorite. Yummo! The burger chain franchise is the 4th fastest growing franchise in the world.

Somehow, I managed to let a good bottle of red wine (a rare moment) stand in the way of bringing our top ten yesterday. Here’s those results from the Hollywood hood. Just as well.

Today Michael Jones is honored for his contribution to rugby football worldwide as a leader, ambassador of humility and calmness in any pressurized situation. RUGBY FOOTBALL HONORS MICHAEL JONES WITH A STATUE

An artist Natalie Stamilla has her Kiwi heart set on sculpting rugby football player Michael Niko Jones in a bronze statue. The artist aims to honor what Jones has gifted the game of rugby football, New Zealand culture, his worldwide fans and his West Auckland community, close to neighboring Helensville.

One of the most famous sports moments of Rugby World Cup history is when Michael dived across the try-line against Italy in the 1987 World Cup tournament to score. The photograph of this moment has captured the young sculptresses imagination and artistic talents.

It is ironic that someone who doesn’t really care that much for ‘graven image culture’ (like Hollywood loves to rock out with as US culture as a norm) and who is known for his great athleticism and cool calm strength veiled by restrained humility would agree to the sculpture even being made. He’s just so humble.

The moment perhaps shows Jones’ sense of humor to honor his team mates of rugby football of the game by green-lighting the project and what all Michael’s peers have given the game too, when Jones switched from basketball to rugby football. It was a rare sporting moment at the time and he brought his basketball reflexes to rugby football – changing the game with quick creative play. Jones is also a big star of South African people.

Michael’s mother Maina Jones was a vibrant school teacher who would always say she “loved Jesus.” It was just her line. Saying such things today, can get school teachers in trouble, but with Maina, it just drew her many fans closer in to her warm heartedness. In that regard, she made modern law scientifically irrelevant. Her life would never have fitted these restrictions. When she died, she had the second largest funeral of any New Zealander known in New Zealand history at her passing for a person who wasn’t born in New Zealand. She was a legend too.

Her bubbly laughter was like a well of joy. Her face was like the sun shining. She knew no fear. She loved all people. All of her children have her zest for life in fine doses and are equally interesting people who carry this one gracious lady’s spirit of excellence in leading others with laughter.

Because Michael has a living likeness named after him too, Niko Kirwan, (rugby football player John Kirwan named his eldest child after his legendary bro), the above fun pop art tribute via New Jersey, USA is going up for Michael’s Kiwi mum who mothered John Kiriwin too and her unique ability to feed peoples’ spirits while feeding them at her family table.

Honoring Maina’s legacy today from The Entertainment Capitol of The World, is perhaps what Michael, his sister Kathy and older bro Derek, would all want to see with this story. She was special. One out of the box.

Maina was her childrens’ and Michael’s biggest fan and she was 200% rugby football obsessed like most Kiwi moms are. As a sport, she loved rugby football. We all miss her enthusiastic contribution to a sporting nation. Her faith was bright shining as the sun.

Talofa Michael Jones! God is always with Michael and his brother Derek – The Matai (Chief – one of them) of us all. Stay close.

FROM HOLLYWOOD – ALL BLACKS HAKA, WHANGAREI BOYS HIGH SCHOOL HAKA FOR SONNY BILL WILLIAMS, SAMUEL WHITELOCK AND RUGBY WORLD CUP 2011

“Tatou – Honor Role.”

Rugby News, Hollywood Calif – Ko nga mea katoa e kitea e tou ringa kia mahia, kia puta tou uaua ki te mahi; kahore hoki he mahi, kahore he tikanga, kahore he matauranga, kahore he whakaaro nui i te reinga, i te wahi ka haere atu na koe ki reira. Whatever you set your hands to do, do it with all your might –King Solomon.

We see fideliter. It anchors us consistently. We hold to our school ideal, of serving faithfully–WBHS Fideliter Moniker, School Song.

We are waiting on prophecy–Moana Maniapoto, song: Prophecy

Surrender to the sky. Over snow-mountain shine, upon the upland road, ride easyJames K. Baxter — poet-seer.

With rugby football and haka in hand, we carve our narrative across green of paddock. Our spirit’s dream expressed as talented physicality driving us forward as relentless sporting passion, forming “our rough-hewn story”.–filmmaker Rudall Hayward, The Te Kooti Trail

Kimihia te kahurangi;. ki te piko tōu matenga, ki te maunga teitei. If you bow your head. Let it be only. To a great mountain–Maori proverb of the ancients, a favorite of Ta Witi Ihimaera, author of Pounamu, Pounamu, a literary collection taught at WBHS when I was in high school.

“We have a good story to tell”–Prime Minister John Key

In Hollywood tonight, the City of Angels, (namely me, oh- and Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon rugby fans of Invictus the rugby leadership movie, maybe just a little bit too, & Ye Old King’s Head Tavern rugby supporters in Santa Monica too!) we celebrate the sporting selection of Sonny Bill Williams joining Samuel and George Whitelock in the announced new team of the New Zealand All Blacks for 2010/11.

New Zealand is the host nation in 2011, of the fiercely contested, gladiatorial sporting world’s, elite Rugby World Cup.

Get to it if you can. Awesomery sporting action. Gladiatorial sporting action. The supporters of the sport are one of the most fun aspects of the game of rugby football. Another reason to get there, just be a part of them all. Bloody good people.

As culturally correct, in sending these lads on their haerenga (journey) towards greatness, we celebrate this with the haka of Te Rauparaha, a Chief who overcame death from enemies in hot pursuit of his life. Te Rauparaha took refuge in a kumara (sweet potato) pit, beneath a Chiefly and noble woman who sat above him wearing chiefly woven cloaks that covered her and him. When he arose from the pit unscathed  - he celebrated with these words of the haka (Maori warrior’s war dance), an artform of masculine ferocity and cool, an expression of strength of a man’s inner spirit, distinct and indigenous to Aotearoa/ New Zealand. Centuries later, this same haka, is the offiical haka of New Zealand rugby lads.

Two hakas go up to be beamed out today from L.A. The first a haka from All Blacks rugby football sporting history performed before a match against South Africa, the current holders of The William Webb Ellis Cup.

The second haka, is the haka of Ngapuhi school boys in one high school - from the entire school of Whangarei Boys High School, brown and white lads (and fellow awesome redheaded like fire et al Kiwis too) performing in unison in the Maori language, in a city that is in the tribal region of NgapuhiTonuNui, one of my two Maori tribes by blood.

In doing so, WBHS send a challenge throughout all high schools in their nation, to match them and do the same with their ferocity – in unity as a collective school expressing Maori culture, language and heritage arts together with pride as a norm and forefront expression of their identity.

Back in my day, the school haka we wrote and performed under Wiki Harding‘s tutelege when I was the High School Maori Cultural captain, when performed – went on to win that year at the Te Taitokerau High Schools Maori Cultural (Kapa Haka) Festival - A haka that won the cup. Which is why, I’m posting this school’s haka in Hollywood today. It is like prophesy that “the best is yet to come.”   This haka featured is a new and updated version. Ka pai. It is good to see culture strong and evolving.

Ngapuhi is the largest Maori tribe by population, in the world. A good effort of leadership from WBHS! Interwoven community strength of participators actively creating and performing culture (like Hollywood movie stars do in film), being the star. Of course WBHS, you’re doing this today. 120+ years of being together as a school, looks good. Mauri Ora from Hollywood. :)

What a fine effort. A reminder that in sport and culture we are all united and are black too in New Zealand. And because we are, I acknowledge, see, affirm, give expression to and visibility to: your ihi, wehi, mana as young men of importance and value as leaders of the modern world in your own right, already. Btw: I am adding all of you lads to Hollywood’s Maori (& Kool Kiwis) Honor Role today. We are on a roll. :)

This image of Horiwood aka Sam Cruickshank (yawn! me – sorry), graduate of Whangarei Boys High School, CR Theology College (woooot!), Te Whare Waanaga a Aotearoa and Auckland University, with Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black to encourage both sporting achievement, entertainment excellence and academic achievement of all young people in New Zealand, on the rugby field and in lecture theater rooms and science labs too and on cultural/ theater stages, on sets and in cinemas. If you endure, dream, find strength within, always look up not down, and believe and give expression to your belief, your voice can be heard in the world too. Even against great odds, as you and Sonny Bill Williams and Samuel W, show as a rugby and haka nation of men who love to perform and entertain.

Good stuff fellahs! Louder - I still can’t quite hear you. :) And – go Rugby World cup players, supporters, followers and entourage of rugby mad babes too, like the smart and sporty Yale Women’s Rugby Team here in the US - for 2011. Kia Kaha Koutou- May great strength be yours.
