LISA CARRINGTON WINS MAORI SPORTS CHAMPION OF THE YEAR 2012
Last year the no.1 sports champion of Maori persuasion was a World Cup rugby champ. It was always going to be a challenge to top that. Yet, in a land known as the rugby paradise farming isles of the South Pacific, the sports world produced another Maori champion beauty in 2012… She’s way Maori!
K1 star Lisa Carrington wins Maori Sports Awards Maori Sports Person of The Year.
Lisa’s story of superb whanau (family) support in both NZ and Australia as well as her golden achievements at the London Olympic Games 2012, wowed New Zealand. She is a new breed of Kiwis’ sporting hero.
That willing smile for the camera makes her a total winner too. A result of many years of disciplined sacrifice and a clear focus for her sporting community and country got her to top athletic honors in 2012.
“Being the first Maori to take a gold medal at the Olympics is special,” she said at the Awards ceremony.
Receiving the honour she said it wasn’t easy to win a gold medal but it was achievable. ”I paddle a waka – the same as the way Maori came to New Zealand – so it is in my blood,” she told the audience.
She said the next Olympics were ahead at Rio and she was planning to be there. (more…)

(It’s nice that the Ngai Tahu tribe, could help Lisa’s tribal elders out there with that tribally blessed lucky bucky pounamu! :)
Carrington credits her father Pat for giving her “a push in the right direction” by starting her at Nippers (juniors) at the Ohope Surf Club.
“I wasn’t the most out-there kid,” she recalls. “I was quite reserved and shy. But once I got a feeling of confidence (more…)
