TO THIS DAY RIGHT – WE GOT THE BEAT

On Sunset & La Brea,
all the beautiful, crazy Hollywood
kids wanna do, is have some fun
in the sun at Malibu by day.

At night, we hit the strip,
showing off the beach tan,
at the clubs sippin on bub
with Hermantown dj-spun fans.

On the way home, a pit stop
at In N' Out, for burger Cali smiles.

Singing The Go Go's, We Got The Beat
home grown tunes, in the convertable cues.

Like sister Suzie K taught me on Day One,
I still get mine, all animal styles huge,
with my fresh pressed potato fries.

A double double with cheese, to this day right,
and extra ketchup please.

In the morning, it's Starbucks on Melrose,
for a total change of funky visual scene.

Of course we were in our thirties,
still being crazy Hollywood kids.

MAORI 3D ACTION MOVIES WITH CHINESE ACTORS CAST IN LEAD ROLES – CREATING A MAORI 3D ACTION MOVIE GENRE IN NEW ZEALAND

Photo: Taiaha art and Mau Rakau action characters are already teaching America’s children each day on TV. The merch that goes with these characters and the revenue of ad placement between their image is kinda a big deal in the USA. We don’t value it enough in NZ or give it a decent enough chance perhaps. Yet the world could.

Here’s a picture I snapped in 2010 in West Hollywood where taiaha art is not only on TV it also features around the city of Hollywood too.

Evolving Maori Cinema in New Zealand’s film industry:

Some global economic developments are occurring in the world of film. New markets are opening up in China. Canada’s best movie maker and world box office record holder James Cameron recently said within five years China’s movie market could rival the Wests. Including Chinese actors in movie ideas is a key part of Cameron’s strategy to evolve his brand of films into China. Actors from China will be sequed into future Avatar sequels, Cameron’s box office gold at present.

In New Zealand our economic leaders have identified China as being a key trading partner of New Zealand in the future.

So the question today is: How can Maori action films find cohesion with Asian markets love of movies that tell mythological stories, just like Maori do in legends Maori have been telling for centuries in New Zealand in a similar way China has been telling their legends in China for many centuries more? WORLD FILM PREMIERE: BRET McKENZIE’S TWO LITTLE BOYS MOVIE ROLLS OUT RED CARPET IN INVERCARGILL

“From muppets to sporting a mullet,” Oscar’s Bret McKenzie and Australia’s Hamish Blake unite with Joanna Hunkin in Invercargill, New Zealand for a red carpet movie premiere of Two Little Boys, a Robert Sarkies and Duncan Sarkie‘s film.

Wendy Petrie has the live studio feed, to a Kiwi bromance comedy interview for Hollywood’s buddy genre’s many fans. It’s an unpretentious movie that Hunkin describes as “gruesome” and “funny.”

Updated: The Southland Times begins its review with “it has plenty of swearing, it has nudity, and it has a fairly graphic scene involving a dead backpacker and an axe.” Adding: It is a black comedy of errors set against a stunning  backdrop – the Southern Scenic Route of Southland New Zealand and its familiar attractions, Jack’s  Blowhole, Curio Bay, Cathedral Cave. It’s a story of what happens when you  outgrow your friends.” Actor Maaka Pohatu stars as Gav in the film too.

September 20th is when the movie hits theaters in New Zealand.

KIM KARDASHIAN, ELIZABETH TAYLOR FASHION PENCHANTS, ANGELINA JOLIE’S CLEOPATRA MOVIE THEMES

Angelina Jolie has a Cleopatra movie in the pipeline. Thus, Kim Kardashian has taken to covering off Dame Elizabeth Taylor‘s movie fashion style. The art of American celebrity being reinterpreted in Hollywood today. Elizabeth Taylor once played a famous version of the Egyptian leader for Hollywood years ago.

The Kardashians are always good for retail sales boosts in the U.S. Good on Kim.

Everytime I see Kim, I think of the very cool Armenian-American community of California. They are warm-hearted people like Maori and Polynesian communities are. Family oriented, most go to church too. They love dancing at clubs togehter, drinking almost Turkish strength coffee in elaborate and ornate demitasse cups. They like laughing lots, working in their own businesses together. They work and party together. Armenian-Americans are fiercely family oriented. Pride is in family. They like never being lied to. I like Armenian-Americans of California a lot.  Being a merchant also runs in their veins strongly as a people. They are Good Peoples.

Their young people study financial management courses at night. Young adults are fiercely independant go-getters too in defining their own identity, returning it back within community though. When they marry and start families, their children go to school where they can learn the language of their culture, thus the new breed in Hollywood are bilingual American citizens. Young adults also have their own economy they grow.

The girls are raised to be extremely motherly. Almost overkill motherly-sweet and when it comes to biz, the women are incredible multi-taskers too. The boys are a bit gangsta tough and always funny. They all love Kiwi actor Temuera Morrison. Fancy that. Love them!

HOLLYWOOD CASTING CALL BUZZ, CK’s NEW FRAGRANCE ENCOUNTER, LARA STONE & ALEXANDER SKARSGARD FOR LEAD IN “FIFTY SHADES OF GREY?”

I’ve never read the book, Fifty Shades of Grey. Hollywood is making the film into a movie. Casting is underway. The usual heartthrob names have come up for the lead role of Christian Grey. Should it be Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp or someone else?, Hollywood is asking. PolicyMic also recommends Ryan Gosling. Let’s face it, the leading lad sort of has to resemble a younger version of Mitt Romney or Mitt’s running mate. Why Gosling, stands a good chance perhaps. Just saying.

Then there’s the issue of greed and inequality rates escalating so high over the past 7-10 years amongst the wealthy, aided by bankers and those who wore ties, that you have to ask, is it really a good time to make this film? Tie jade repellent factor is something the PR of the film will need to get audiences over, for younger audiences to find the movie relevant – the future of Hollywood films.

For casting directors who may read the blog, Tennessee folks are the top rating American stars on the blog over the last 9 days. Why? Who knows, yet the world seems to want to see more of Tennessee lately on a trends tracking level.

Back to Hollywood casting: True Blood HBO actor, Alexander Skarsgard‘s new TVC where he co-stars with model Lara Stone has some pundits hoping Skarsgard will be approached to star in the lead. Watch the TVC and make up your own mind. Skarsgard for Hollywood’s silver screen invention of Christian Grey?

Or should the role go to a newcomer, no one has ever heard of? That would be rad. Like a talent search reality TV series, then TV audiences could vote on their lead of choice. In the process, new actors would be discovered too by the audience votes. With a decent script, their movies would always be hits, because the people voted them onto the screen before the actors even started in Hollywood.

Maybe that’s too rad thinking and too creative an approach for Hollywood?, yet not a silly idea to shake Hollywood up a tad. It would be cool to see a deserving every day guy, become a big Hollywood star. Like a farmer who acts in their local theater company once a year, or a single parent chippie, building homes in Utah for cheeky Swiss-Mormons’ charities.  That kind of vibe could work too. An unknown from Colorado could also be a good mix for America’s future plans.

Just create a new heartthrob, cast them opposite Hollywood’s leading lights names, then hello, big box office smash hit would ensue for E L James, spin-off film franchise. It worked for The Twilight saga films, in Summit Entertainment, a fledging film company. Why not try the same casting approach for this film franchise and older actors?

In any event, Calvin Klein’s fragrance marketing team has done a swell job at seguing into author E.L James’ audience following, with the Skarsgard TVC Fifty Shades referencing buzzing it’s way across the 50 States of the USA this weekend. He’s so savvy that CK in flogging his scents range.

In other casting news & talent management in the Hollywood hood, Brits are making a wave, alongside Australia’s Hemsworth clan. Also check out: 11 British Actors Invading Hollywood’s ‘It List’ too. An actor called Lloyd would be good from Britain, as a Fed approved and bonafide potential Hollywood talent too. At this stage, I’d go the unknown local community hero casting, then Skarsgard-Ryan, at the populous vote. They’ve both certainly got what it takes to helm such a film franchise for E L James.

THE ROCK HAS HOLLYWOOD HEAT

The no.1 most voted Hollywood actor today is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Currently filming in the Chris Morgan penned script, The Fast & The Furous 6, The Rock is also slated to star in Anthony and Joe Russo‘s movie Ciudad and in the Chuck Russell remake of Arabian Knights with Australia’s Liam Hemsworth and Wales’ Anthony Hopkins.

The Rock is also the 3rd most influential box office earning actor in Hollywood, according to Forbes magazine 2012. He is a good example of sports-Hollywood cross over as a star construct.

ELIA KAZAN’S HOLLYWOOD STAR – ON THE WATER FRONT OF PROLETARIAN WIT SURREALISM

His wit a proletarian thunderbolt.

–Elia Kazan:

A slow day at the Kiwi blogger’s office as the Olympics Opening Ceremony in London got off to a hiss and a roar. Red, white and blue skies over Eden.

For some reason unknown, my mind meanders across Constantinople, Ottoman Empire’s New York son, Elia Kazan.

His self-expression and psychological realism. A gift of drawing out the best dramatic performances from the well of human experiences he saw in his actors. On the waterfront of a streetcar named desire he arrived east of Eden.  ”I don’t move unless I have some empathy with the basic theme,” his emotinal palate bespoke him.  He too carried with him the aura of a prophet, a magician, a witch doctor, a psychoanalyst, and a feared father of a Jewish home. He was the force that held cohesion and permanency of team. His wit a proletarian thunderbolt.

An angel against personal alienation with an outrage over social injustice.

A LIST

Once upon a time a German man had the humble foresight to step outside of his circumstances of privilege. He was an entrepreneur who became an artist, creating a garden of living art.

Although he could not help everyone, he imagined, planned and created A list. His list was pure love. He would let flowers have water and oxygen longer. What he did to achieve a living garden, was totally illegal. He committed war crimes to do it.

Here is a link to that man of a different spirit’s list.

HOW KIRK DOUGLAS HELPED TO BREAK BLACKLIST

ABC’S David Muir zooms viewers in to celebrate the life of Kirk Douglas, as a Hollywood light who stood against censorship in a culture where politics was too heavy-handed and blacklist occurred from government. A friend and mentor named Robert, who is 91 and lives in Beverly Hills, once got black-listed because he worked as a journalist who would socialize with black people in Los Angeles when reporting.

He was Jewish, yet he could pass for Parsee. Robert was associated to Lena Horne‘s circle of friends, when Lena was black-listed as a communist. He was blacklisted too. They were crazy times. Robert is still a registered member of Pen America to this day, an organisation that is a global literary community dedicated to protecting free expression and celebrating literature in humane ways.

David Muir’s story goes: “In the 1950s Hollywood was consumed by the blacklist. Writers, producers and actors were called before Congress amid fear they might be Communists. The mere mention of a name was enough to end a career.

“It was the worst time in Hollywood,” Hollywood veteran Kirk Douglas told ABC News. “Everybody told me I was crazy.”

Crazy because as a producer of Spartacus Douglas put his own career on the line, his own fortune, to hire Dalton Trumbo, one of those writers on the blacklist.

“If you do it … you’ll never work in this town again. You will be declared a Communist,” Cleo Trumbo, Dalton’s wife said people told Douglas.

But Douglas, hired Dalton Trumbo anyway, and Spartacus became the top movie of the USA that year. The movie wasn’t only a box-office winner, it was also instrumental in breaking the blacklist.”

Douglas realized that within the face of Dalton Trumbo’s faceless story was his own story, that “there by the grace of God, go I.” He acted on that basis with integrity in liberty, in one pivotal action of inclusion that went beyond surface appearances of the milieu-of-the-day, thus changing history. With confidence in peace Douglas disciplined a system that had become drunk on power, elitist exclusion for personal gain and was blind to the image of itself, while being clearly unjust towards humanity. Kirk Douglas hacked the system of inequality and greed backed unjustly by a state system’s might.

The tyranny of the blacklist was broken. He was an agent of redemption, the only true firm foundation of real grace. Freedom returned, the marginalized advanced and Kirk Douglas included others more honestly with his spirit of wise compassion and fearless courage to love others as he wanted to be treated himself. He demonstrated: “there by the Grace of God, go us.”

No.1 RED CARPET GIRL – NASHVILLE’S MILEY CYRUS – JUNE 2012

She’s in fine fitness form and the no.1 voted American citizen on this blog for 2012.

The cheeky biker boots can’t hide the fact that she’s the sveltest red carpet star, Hollywood currently has in this fast-moving, always surreal, Tinsel Town minute.

But if Miley Cyrus gets any thinner… we’ll have to send Smilers a box of New Zealand cheeses… while farmers still own them in NZ.  That might be a good idea… before the teenager’s much anticipated star-studded wedding.

Smilers is definitely ready to start taking action movie roles on in Hollywood, if she wanted to grow a film franchise.

ARI EMANUEL IS HOLDING IT GIANTS LIKE GOOGLE & APPLE TO ACCOUNT ON INFORMATION PIRACY

The most requested American name today on Horiwood Blog is Ari Emanuel, talent agent and owner of the William Morris Endeavor talent agency.

Nikki Finke‘s Hollywood website has the best coverage on Ari’s career roles to date. Read it all here. He’s doing good things.

On Intellectual Property Protection for American IP, Ari is in a battle with big IT companies who aggregate everyones writing, pictures and thus intellectual property too. Ari doesn’t think this is fair, as Americans in showbiz have developed a star template for show business that is emulated world wide. In particular, Ari posits that California is the most at risk of having IP cyphoned from it. Often the architects of the dual art-science formulas of what the best entertainment in the world is, are getting short changed in IT giants money making wrangles. California is a melting pot of people all over the world who added their culture to make California IP a winner. Yet California IP in showbiz is like the salt and pepper seasoning of entertainment worldwide, that symbolizes the signifiers of ‘star’ that punctuate show biz rhetoric worldwide. Ari has a point with Silicon Valley trying to own all of California’s blingy IP on websites… and the big one -not sharing.

Finke notes: “Ari Emanuel this week started a battle — or, to put it more politely, a debate — with Google over the piracy issue. The WME chief complained about Google at the AllThingsD conference on Wednesday, then Google bitchslapped him back saying he was “misinformed.”

Emanuel responded with an open letter, stating: “I am misinformed about a lot – just ask my wife – but I’m not misinformed about this: one of our last remaining dominant American exports is our creativity, no matter how you define it, either as a story or as an algorithm. There is equal genius behind companies like Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Google as there is behind artists who create stories that resonate around the world.  We need to protect America’s intellectual property and Hollywood can’t do it on its own…  It’s time for Hollywood, our government and Silicon Valley to step up and collectively resolve this problem. Let me know where and when and I’ll be there.”

Other terse sentence structures Ari is renowned for in show biz when being the fine mediator that he is are:

“I’m going to piss a lot of people off…”

“I promise not to swear or hit anyone…”

On investing more in Television Talent, Shows, Formats:

“When you think about the entertainment business, you can’t just think about movies,” the WME co-CEO cautioned the audience, “we’re in the music business with concerts, the author business, we have 230 shows on TV. I like TV.”

On ya!

- – -

Meanwhile, Lyn Sweet of The Chicago Sun Times notes how Ari’s brother Rahm appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe show on Tuesday. The show featured former White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley and Gov. Pat Quinn.

About being an Emanuel growing up, Rahm explained how he is the middle son; Ezekiel, a bioethicist, is the oldest; and Ari, is the youngest. The mayor told about the Emanuels as kids after saying that “without a doubt” Ari was the most difficult as a kid.

“The reason Ari’s the way Ari is, when we grew up we had bunk beds, Zeke and mine, and Ari had a crib right next to the bunk bed. And we literally used to jump into the … crib to watch the baby jump,” he said.

Clearly, Ari’s childhood at the mercy of sibling terrorism, gave him the skills to be one of the best talent managers the world knows. Ari’s mother is a renowned social justice activist. Perhaps why all the Emanuel lads carry on like they’re judges for the USA on issues of fairness, half the time.

MEMORIAL DAY CALIFORNIA 2012

Jesse D. Pittman, 27. Died Aug. 6, 2011: Never short on smiles or odd ball jokes. A one in a million guy with the kind of attitude and work ethic that makes his community proud. Could never have a bad day around Jesse, anyone who knew him knows that he could squeeze a smile out of a rock. What a great guy. Thoughts and prayers are with The Pittman family, Thanks to them for helping to mold, not just a model American, but a model human being.— JP Carson. August 11, 2011.

- – -

When I arrived in California in early 2006, I was socialized into a military family. Kinda. (One family member was a Master Sargeant in the “Hollywood National Guard”). We lived in a beautiful home in the city where Walt Disney sketched, dreamed and imagined a world for children. The gardens and hills were beautiful. Mountain lion and deer would come down from the hills in winter. It was not difficult to see where Walt drew his inspiration from. The houses in this city were three times bigger than most houses in New Zealand. They were so much taller too.

I’ll never forget the ceremony at Forrest Lawn Memorial on Memorial Day. Everyone in attendance turned up to pay respects to soldiers who had fought for America. The family had duties to perform on the day. Sitting in the crowd, surrounded by American strangers it was a sobering moment everyone understood, yet it was also full of pageantry too. Though sad, this was the nice side of military life.

The price of war is not forgotten by military families. Here’s a snapshot of that view from the LA Times.

California writes: “On this Memorial Day, the Los Angeles Times pays tribute to the California service members who have died in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq by publishing a selection of comments posted over the last year by those who knew and loved them. Hundreds more can be read on The Times’ database, California’s War Dead.

These memories speak of friendship and loss in a simple and heartfelt way — and remind us of the great sacrifices made in service to this country.

More than 6,000 members of the American military have died since the conflict in Afghanistan began in late 2001. Among them are 701 Californians and an additional 474 men and women who were assigned to bases in this state.”

Lest we forget.
