“We are still investigating, but my conviction is [Google is] diverting traffic. They are monetising this kind of business, the strong position they have in the general search market…This is not only a dominant position, I think – I fear – there is an abuse of this dominant position.”
–Joaquin Almunia, The European Union’s competition chief, responds to a row with Google over whether it has changed its search results to give preferential treatment to links to its own services, at the expense of those from competitors.
Mr Almunia stressed that he was more concerned with the way that Google presents its results, rather than the complex codes at their heart.

Only in New Zealand when you have 21,000+ website posts of varied content across 9000+ sections of diverse titles too … would (and I mean this in the nicest possible way)… would, New Zealand’s most busted up city Christchurch… and an MP feature in page 1 visibility of Google’s results. That’s too funny.
Is that a) democratic? b) a sign of government SEO manipulation the way algorithms have been set? c) incredible domination of four years of website content d) or: just how it is…
Personally, I don’t care… it is what it is… and I lived in Christchurch once … yet in the USA… that never happened on google page 1.
Politicians never featured in the first ten pages of google SEO rankings. Oh well… it’s certainly a different ball game in NZ. Extremely territorially competitive, obviously – the way audiences are being directed to flow. Lol!

The top trending search for the year was Olympics. Volvo Ocean Race and boy band One Direction and online gaming site kizi trended too. Whitney Houston, Gangnam Style and Pinterest were popular too.
The computer game Diablo 3 took eighth place, with Hurricane Sandy and social media website 9gag. Last year’s top ten list for NZ included the terms: ”nz”, “auckland” and “weather”. Kim Dotcom, Tongariro, Venus, Belarus rated well too.

SHARE EPIC MOMENTS – GOOGLE & GLOBE LAUNCH “FREE ZONE” FOR “NEXT BILLION” SMART PHONE-SAVVY ASIAN MARKETS
“It’s aimed at the next billion users of the internet, many of whom will be in emerging markets and encounter the internet first on a mobile phone, without ever owning a PC, said Abdel Karim Mardini, product manager for Google.
Mardini is referring to Google’s launch of a service it hopes will push millions of people in the developing world to access the internet — and Google’s ads — via basic mobile phones.
Google will launch the service, called Free Zone, first in the Philippines. The service allows phones to access search, email and its social networking service Google+ for free. The plan ultimately leads to Google moving more into data plan acquistion facilitation for TelCo giants.
The Philippines is on the radar with the product launch. (more…)
