ABOUT THEIR ART – ELI AND EDYTHE BROAD’S STAR TEMPLATE OF CALIFORNIA
Eli Broad:
Not everyone in New Zealand has had it sweet on arrival. Some of our best peoples endured hardship on arrival in New Zealand. As immigrants they rose above the ranks to be stellar New Zealanders.
America with a population of 310 million people (US Census data 2010), is a nation founded on immigrants largely. It is a melting pot.
When people succeed their stories in the USA is one of great strength in a land of huge opportunity too. With that thought in mind, I was thinking of Eli Broad today. His star template as an American provides a lesson (or several) in attainment.
He was an immigrant: Eli was born in the Bronx, raised in Detroit. His folks Lithuanian immigrants. He learned from their lives, That at the end of the day, that’s how it is. Life getting better is about an individual choice. He chose to improve his family’s lot.
Property was how he started: At 20, Eli was able to buy his first patch of land.
He started his own building business: By 1957, Eli was already married to Edythe. He co-founded Kaufman & Broad in 1957. Eli took a loan of $25k from his wife’s folks and became one of USA’s biggest home builders in the affordable housing market. His passion for business was an ability to grow a good team. (more…)

Ari Emanuel has joined the The Museum of Contemporary Arts Board.
LA Times reports: “MOCA’s announcement said that over the last two years Emanuel has been “instrumental” in helping the museum forge a relationship with Google that led to Monday’s launch of the MOCAtv channel on Google-owned YouTube.”

LOS ANGELES TRIP GETAWAYS: PAUL J. GETTY MUSEUM & BRENTWOOD VILLAGE COMMUNITY LIFE
Q. If planning on visiting Los Angeles, where should I be based to see celebrity stuff? What chance do I have of seeing Angeleno Jolie?
A. You’re more likely to see her family in The Vallley than AJ herself. For somewhere to stay, try the Angeleno. It is very cheap. Good quality, cheap. Kiwi friends have stayed here on trips to LA. It’s also close to The Getty families’ largest private collection of art in the world. One of my favorite art collections on display with incredible wine and music festivals occurring in weekends on the sprawling Getty Estate lawns set against a backdrop of stunning cityscape views. New Zealand’s high commissioner in Los Angeles was based in Brentwood. Their work has included extensive relationship building with New Zealand and Oregon from Los Angeles. Perhaps because of this fact, if you’re a Kiwi, Brentwood always feels very Kiwi hood.
Brentwood village is closeby. Many celebrities with young families live in this village. Very safe. If you’re a Kiwi it’s like Titirangi.
Brentwood is close to the 405. If you go to your left, you’re in the Valley. If you go right you’ll hit Hollywood. The Getty is about 1 mile left.

While there checking out the local Irish art, Regina shook hands with former IRA commander Martin McGuinness yesterday in a highly symbolic moment in the Northern Ireland peace process. ARMY ART – MATT GAULDIE, MILITARY ARTIST – SCOTT BASE, ANTARCTICA
Whose cool?
Capt. Matt Gauldie, military artist.
Matt’s unusual upbringing as a Kiwi growing up with a global view, led him to create art as the pieces that remained the same in his life’s journey. His childhood and careeer ranges from Windy Wellington, to Hawaiian tropical heat to Extreme cold arctic temperatures.
The NZ Army’s website says: “[The Lower Hutt artist's] childhood was spent growing up in a creative environment as both parents working as artists. His mother Gail, a full time artist working in Wellington and his father Bob, a Scientist.
Upon completing his schooling in Hawaii he returned to New Zealand in 1995 where after time at Elam School of Art and Design, in Auckland, he began working as a full time artist.”
Working on a commissioned piece in Ngati Tumatauenga (the New Zealand army), Gauldie’s art defines the tradition of the environment, art and our military history of soldiers and military families service, towards adventurous conservation and preservation in the world.
While on a NZ-US mission taking supplies to the Scott Base in the Antarctia, Matt was on board to update the moment for NZ at the base.
The finished result? Gauldie’s latest artwork is calming to the NZ psyche providing a new portrait of who we are as New Zealand citizens. Take a look. Heather du Plessis-Allan and Mark Sainsbury bring the story of a Kiwi artist.

PIANO ART: HE KORERO PURAKAU MO TE AWANUI O TE MOTU: STORY OF A NEW ZEALAND RIVER – MICHAEL PAREKOWHAI AT TE PAPA
Michael Parekowhai’s artworks are gracing New York City’s Asia Society Museum gallery. His Kapa Haka series of 10 fibreglass security officers form a guard of honour into the show.
In 2011, the artist exhibited at the important Venice Biennale. On show was two black bronze pianos topped with giant bulls, a bronze security guard, a brass olive tree and pair of Crocs. A bright red Steinway piano with traditional carving and paua shell trim, completed the exhibit.
The red piano titled He Korero Purakau mo te Awanui o Te Motu: Story of a New Zealand river, is now housed at Te Papa Museum, Wellington.
A self-confessed naughty boy, Parekowhai who now is Associate Professor at Auckland University’s school of fine arts, says as a kid he was noticed by his art teacher at Northcote College and encouraged to put his spirit and humour into art instead of mischief. He could have fallen through the cracks but instead he has become one of the most unique artistic voices in this country.
Michael’s unprentious nature is what the arts community respect about this man and his bullish and bold work.
New York seems to like his giant blow up bunnies that take a shot at “imported” pests, referencing New Zealand’s agricultural identity as a country and farmer’s pastureland productivity yields in relation to wild rabbits having too much fun.
Parekowhai’s work has explored Homer in his art themes.

SHARK TEETH EARRINGS – RANGI TOPEORA’S DAINTY FASHION
In 1840, Maori Chieftainess Rangi Kuini Wikitoria Topeora was one of several Maori women who signed a Treaty with Queen Victoria forming the founding document of our fathers and mothers in New Zealand.
The Auckland City Art Gallery has this portrait by artist Gottfried Lindauer currently on show.
She wore shark’s teeth in her ears as her earrings from the Ocean. They were the fashion of the day. Cute. :)
People of Ngati Toa and Ngati Raukawa Maori tribes in New Zealand descend from Rangi to this day. Always an achiever, as a young woman she was a famous composer of waiata, and many of her songs are still sung today. Waiata were like Television, radio and the internet in those days, they conveyed important messages of Kiwis to others.
Over a thousand years on since they were composed in New Zealand, today, waiata - still do. :)
