SMOOTHED VESSELS

smoothed by water, smoothed by hands,
carved out to moor the waka.
we flew here and flew, our minds and hearts flew.

KAPA HAKA PRINCIPLES OF EXPRESSION

I find it interesting how opposites attract, yet we were complementary in every way: she was the melody, I was the words and together we were the song. The values they lived by – humility, love, hardwork, loyalty, pride in the things that make Maori, Maori. Kapa Haka (Maori performing arts and community spirit of team) is something about entertainment yet more than that, kapa haka is about family. It’s a way to teach good family values to the next generation as well as teaching them Maoritanga (the values embedded in the linguistic properties of the Maori language), popped open in the cultural atmosphere, every time the language is spoken, expressed and uncontained.

Brad Haami reflects on Kapa Haka’s enthusiasts in a tradition that is centuries strong in New Zealand.

TE MATAU A MAUI FUN SPIRIT OF JOURNEYING TO NEW LIFE

Te Matau A Maui

We are because our founding fathers and mothers braved rough unknown conditions to discover a new land of life and plenty for us.

Te Matau A Maui,  a double hulled sailing waka arrived in Napier in late December 2012 after an 18 month pacific journey to a powhiri by Ngati Kahungunu. Lest we forget our greats.

MOM’S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2012 – HOPE FOR THE FUTURE, HAPPINESS THAT WILL STAY

Uncle Harry H, Mom, Cousin H

My mom arrives. Her Ngapuhi-Ngati Whaatua eyes are youthful. Glowing with playfulness. They dance like the waves of Tonga, Fiji and Samoa in calm tide time.

Her arms are laden with Christmas dinner. A feast. A kiss, a hug, a warm embrace. An exchange of pleasantries. Then the young, yet old lady dances off down the stairs again. In her role as “super kuia,” she’s mega busy. Having fun, she’s in her element. Mom is so cute today.

Mom’s card says: … el…  (more…)

BIOSCIENCE DRUGS INDUSTRY IN NEW ZEALAND IS SET TO BOOM 2013 ONWARDS

Bio Science Health Products Include Super FoodsScience End of Year Commentary 2012: Science [in New Zealand], especially bioscience, is at a crucial point in its evolution, writes Paul Tan.

Kiwi bioscience companies secured millions in international investment and grabbed the global spotlight this year. Is granting taxpayer dollars to science and technology companies that end up doing most of their business overseas, or being acquired by an overseas company, wise?

The most globally awarded bioscience company in NZ is LanzaTech. Sean Simpson is one of a few scientists at work in the company. The clean energy and renewable chemicals technology company, [majoring in ethanol production at steel mills that churn through iron sands in their daily output] is considered in the top echelon. The company employs 85 pax.

Other companies Paul lists as being scalable are:

•Living Cell Technologies (Auckland) joint-venture with Japan’s Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory to co-develop for the neurology industry. A deal is inked at $34 million, tentatively. (more…)

A MAORI KIRIHIMETE 2012

Ngati Whatua o Kaipara 2011All across Aotearoa New Zealand, Iwi (Maori tribes) are celebrating year’s end 2012. For many, it was a hard year yet after several centuries, Iwi doesn’t change. Iwi goes on. As a living story of community, Iwi is one of New Zealand’s oldest stories. People and their designs come and go in New Zealand. Yet one thing New Zealand knows is true, like oxygen in and out… Iwi still goes on.

Mauri Ora.

MAORI VOYAGERS SAIL TO RAPANUI EASTER ISLAND

Navigating across the ocean with only the stars, the moon, the sun, waves as their guide Maori arrived at Rapanui, Easter Island recently. They sailed in boats styled in the traditional mode of that their ancestors sailed the high seas in, when they discovered Aotearoa New Zealand.

The cross-cultural exchange at Rapanui is quite beautiful in this video news reel footage. It reminds all New Zealanders and people of the South Pacific of who we are. Adventurous, courteous people.
