WHAT MAKES HOLLYWOOD AGENTS TICK? EZEKIEL EMANUEL DISHES ON RAHM, ARI EMANUEL’S UPBRINGING & HUMOR IN NEW MEMOIR 2013

Ezekiel Ari Rahm Emanuel Annie Leibowitz Photo Jan 2013Ari really could not help but be annoying,” Ezekiel writes. To provoke their father, he would scan the menu at every restaurant to identify the most expensive things and order them all, a habit Ezekiel attributes to his dyslexia. “He had  trouble reading menus, and he found it easier just to look for the higher prices, which he anticipated were associated with the better dishes… As Ari grew older [he] learned the fine art of persistent and intentional irritation.”

JESSICA SIMPSON 47th MOST VOTED STAR 2012 – WORKING MOTHER, FASHION MERCHANT DISTRIBUTOR, CELEBRITY MC, WALKING REALITY TV SHOW, OCCASIONAL TEXAN-CALIFORNIA SINGER

Jessica Simpson is the 47th most voted star of 2012. Once a reverend’s daughter, her father became manager moving her family from Texas to California. The Simpson’s cartoon show was a big hit, so the family had everything to gain from the move.

A career as a singer got Jess’ vivacious talent noticed, before reality TV shows (and coasting off Britney Spears‘ star template too) allowed Jess to gain a profile in the US that few other people in music can claim as their own. Her art of being marketed as a product, taught her how to market merchandise well across the 50 States of the USA. (more…)

CHRIS HEMSWORTH SIGNS WITH CAA TALENT AGENCY & IS FILMING IN LANDMANNALAUGAR ICELAND

Young Aussie actor, Chris Hemsworth‘s American fan base are online in full force today.

Good to see Aussies doing well as entertainers in the USA.

Chrislatest news:

CASTING TALENT AGENCY & AGENT SHAKE UPS: Nikki Finke‘s Hollywood website writes: Chris Hemsworth is proving to be a go-to young guy for big ticket Hollywood fare. Particularly after Marvel’s Thor and The Avengers and also Universal’s Snow White And The Huntsman.

Chris is starring in Thor 2 and will lead DreamWorks/Fox’s Steven Spielberg-directed Robopocalypse and receive $10 million from CBS Films to play a terrorist hunter in American Assassin. So which agency will represent Hollywood’s hottest new action hunk is big news. I can now tell you it is CAA with Jack Wigham and Bryan Lourd.”

ON LOCATION IN ICELAND: Chris has landed in Iceland to film the Thor sequel movie. Scenes for the sequel, Thor: The Dark World will use Iceland’s stunning backdrops to add the film’s ancient Nordic world feel.

According to visir.is, shooting will take place in Dómadalur valley by geothermal area Landmannalaugar in the south-central highlands.

Ruv.is adds that Skógafoss waterfall, Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon and Skeiðarársandur plains will also serve as locations for the movie.

Iceland Review notes how up to 300 people will come from the U.S. to work on the shooting in addition to the almost 200 Icelanders who will also be involved in the project. The film crew is serviced by Icelandic film production company True North. It is the most significant film project to ever happen in Iceland so far.

Sounds good. So busy.

3D CHAORI ACTION MOVIE CINEMA – GETTING A $1 BILLION A YEAR EARNING, MAORI & CHINESE ACTION FUSION INDUSTRY MOVING

He was a Maori Prince, a Viking of The Sun. She, a Chinese Princess from the Ming Dynasty.
In a new horizon, in a mythical land on a new frontier, they were cast in an epic war to fight for their love.

What the world needs to see is 3D mythological cinema of this nature in New Zealand.

3D Chaori Cinema (Asian-friendly Maori action movie cinema) is a $1 billion a year generating industry waiting to happen in NZ. In my mind’s eye I see it growing in New Zealand. It supports the already well established 3D cinema of NZ. It just makes movies a lot quicker for the growing Asian movie market of the world.

It needs a development fund to get started. Russell Crowe the first person in the world of Maori descent to win an Oscar and Hollywood’s Lucy Liu are giving a similar concept a go in the film, Man with Iron Fists. We need to move more into 3D with Chaori cinema texts in and from New Zealand. Cliff Curtis, a Maori actor has also been a success starring in Asian nations in an Asian action star mythological film.

We have enough trial models on display in aspects of this genre to really go for it and develop it further. Chaori cinema is another strand of cinema to be developed in New Zealand to sit alongside what Sir Peter Jackson, John Barnett and newcomers like James Cameron have already achieved from New Zealand.

It is a brand new cinema strand though, that can only make the overall package more attractive when perceiving New Zealand as a stand out filmmaking nation location. It makes sense to develop Chaori cinema and Maori cinema that is Asian-markets friendly, more.

It’s an authentic visual expression of New Zealand for the wider world’s markets.

FILM FRANCHISE PRODUCTION GROWTH NEW ZEALAND – INVESTING IN KIWI WRITERS & SCREENWRITERS IS THE KEY

There is nothing more powerful than ideas whose time has come.

Victor Hugo.

There is nothing more powerful than ideas whose time has come,
filmed on landscapes that are resources rich. ImagiNATIVE writers are the world's first
architects of a future new world and new frontier.

–The way of global film sales marketing patterns observed over a few years now.

The pen is mightier than the sword.

Winston Churchill as a writer, storyteller, peace maker and boozy warrior leader.

Developing a sustainable film industry in New Zealand really comes down to investing in New Zealand writers more and fostering relationships with the world’s best screenwriters too. It is vital that New Zealand encourages writers, as writers become the billionaires after all the effort has gone into producing successful film franchises. We need some Maori billionaires in New Zealand. Maybe some could write their way into the history books invisaging a cinematic light to project the new way.

We must write films from New Zealand, as if we don’t other people’s written ideas of the South Pacific, will be written about our territory. So, it makes sense to always be writing our own version of the world and attaching our definitions and meanings of landscape of the South Pacific to our own words and ideas in our films. We can write futuristic films, yet the messages in them attached to our landscapes have a resonance all over the world for the good.

We have the locations and enough filmmaking capability now in New Zealand. We just need better scripts, film franchise ideas created in New Zealand and a belief in fast tracking screen-writers to a global level of writing ability. Film crews travel (actors included) to where whoever has the best ideas - to collaborate on – film projects of significance.

New Zealand is soon to become that place even more so, then we have been already on some major film projects.

So what kinds of writers could happen in New Zealand? As a precursor to Mitt Romney‘s rise in politics as a star figure for the US, novelist Stephenie Meyer was a Mormon housewife of Arizona, who mimicked the UK’s JK Rowlings star template as a novelist.

Meyer’s story as a humble writer is one of a stand out success for relativiely new billionaires. Meyer’s novel ideas, even created a brand new studio to make her novels into films. It was then aquired by Lionsgate to import a strong youth audience following into Lionsgate’s entertainment brand.

The young actors cast in Meyer’s films now lead California’s box office (Kristen Stewart being one). JK of course, mimicked Brit authors like C.S Lewis and JRR Tolkien to find her own voice as a single parent writer. Magic was JK’s theme of children learning at school. Meyer’s was a voice of fantasy, romance, angst – youth under threat. Meyer’s creative literary bent, was a huge hit.

What this tells us: Perhaps we need to invest in single parents and-or Kiwi housewives more. (more…)

GLOBAL SHOWBIZ BRIEFS: IN HOT DEMAND, AUSTRALIAN & KIWI ACTORS – BCE PLANS ONLINE MOVIE SERVICE, LEGEND 3D & DIGITAL DOMAIN

Hollywood Agents are headhunting South Pacific actors right now:

Aussie Actors Win a Share of North American Revenues. Australian actors who work in Hollywod feature films will get a 3.6% royalty from North American distributors’ gross receipts four years after films are first exploited in that market under a new Actors Feature Film Agreement (AFFA).

The budget of Australian films in which one or more SAG members are employed also has been raised from $A15 million ($15.5 million) to $22.5 million under the deal negotiated between Equity and representatives of the Screen Producers Association of Australia (SPAA). The new agreement, backdated to January 2012, gives Aussie actors a 17.5% wage increase over 5 years.  Read on@NikkeFinke‘s Industry website.

In case you’re wondering, apart from Bret McKenzie and Cliff Curtis most of the USA has yet to learn that there’s a difference between an Aussie actor and a Kiwi actor yet. Hot demand for South Pacific talent in the US.

My advice: If you do go, take mace. Just kidding. . . kinda.

INDIA HEMSWORTH’S DAD QUITS IFA TALENT AGENCY – TALENT BANKS MANAGEMENT SHAKE UPS

Nikki Finke writes of Australian actor Chris Hemsworth:

“He is Hollywood’s hottest new action movie star. Now Chris Hemsworth has quit his agency IFA Talent.

“He is not taking meetings for now but maybe in a few months,” an insider told Deadline Hollywood. The leading box office helmer is the star of Thor, Snow White And The Huntsman, The Avengers film franchise. Steven Spielberg has also eyed Chris for the upcoming Robopocalypse. In addition, Marvel’s action movies Thor 2 and The Avengers 2 will keep young Chris tres busy.

Signed with IFA talent president Ilene Feldman for about 4 years, Chris has moved on. It does happen. When a star gets as big as Chris at the box office, within an agency an agent often drops their name and gets all of their rising talent signed to movie roles. Directors and producers sign the talent at the star’s agency recommend in the hope the new star could be the next Hemsworth. That’s all good and all a part of star-making the next wave of acting talent. A leading light is happy to loan their name to younger talent, in this way.

Yet, when the agent then forgets to negotiate strong deals the star’s way sharing bonus profits the agent has carved off the star’s back and parlayed across the unknown talent it does become an issue. Especially when the talent agent is more on the side of the studios than acted like an agent and inked suitable contracts for the leading star (now, the ‘gig’ of the agency) with the studios the actor was side to. That latter being the agents no.1 job to ensure. In such a case, a star is quite right to assume something is up.

Having lived in Hollywood, I would say the story in Chris Hemsworth’s case verges on being one of racism. The Aussie is the draw to the box office, and thus to the agency. All of Hollywood win when he shines. Yet behind the scenes, the agent is treating him like a non-American citizen within America. Fair? Not fair? Is it just the price of ‘immigration’ in Hollywood or the USA as a super heavy tax immigrants should endure? Or, is the star within their rights to just say, see you later? As Chris decided to do.

And so the love-hate relationship with newcomers continues in Tinsel Town with Hemsworth’s case. (more…)

HOLLYWOOD CASTING CALL BUZZ, CK’s NEW FRAGRANCE ENCOUNTER, LARA STONE & ALEXANDER SKARSGARD FOR LEAD IN “FIFTY SHADES OF GREY?”

I’ve never read the book, Fifty Shades of Grey. Hollywood is making the film into a movie. Casting is underway. The usual heartthrob names have come up for the lead role of Christian Grey. Should it be Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp or someone else?, Hollywood is asking. PolicyMic also recommends Ryan Gosling. Let’s face it, the leading lad sort of has to resemble a younger version of Mitt Romney or Mitt’s running mate. Why Gosling, stands a good chance perhaps. Just saying.

Then there’s the issue of greed and inequality rates escalating so high over the past 7-10 years amongst the wealthy, aided by bankers and those who wore ties, that you have to ask, is it really a good time to make this film? Tie jade repellent factor is something the PR of the film will need to get audiences over, for younger audiences to find the movie relevant – the future of Hollywood films.

For casting directors who may read the blog, Tennessee folks are the top rating American stars on the blog over the last 9 days. Why? Who knows, yet the world seems to want to see more of Tennessee lately on a trends tracking level.

Back to Hollywood casting: True Blood HBO actor, Alexander Skarsgard‘s new TVC where he co-stars with model Lara Stone has some pundits hoping Skarsgard will be approached to star in the lead. Watch the TVC and make up your own mind. Skarsgard for Hollywood’s silver screen invention of Christian Grey?

Or should the role go to a newcomer, no one has ever heard of? That would be rad. Like a talent search reality TV series, then TV audiences could vote on their lead of choice. In the process, new actors would be discovered too by the audience votes. With a decent script, their movies would always be hits, because the people voted them onto the screen before the actors even started in Hollywood.

Maybe that’s too rad thinking and too creative an approach for Hollywood?, yet not a silly idea to shake Hollywood up a tad. It would be cool to see a deserving every day guy, become a big Hollywood star. Like a farmer who acts in their local theater company once a year, or a single parent chippie, building homes in Utah for cheeky Swiss-Mormons’ charities.  That kind of vibe could work too. An unknown from Colorado could also be a good mix for America’s future plans.

Just create a new heartthrob, cast them opposite Hollywood’s leading lights names, then hello, big box office smash hit would ensue for E L James, spin-off film franchise. It worked for The Twilight saga films, in Summit Entertainment, a fledging film company. Why not try the same casting approach for this film franchise and older actors?

In any event, Calvin Klein’s fragrance marketing team has done a swell job at seguing into author E.L James’ audience following, with the Skarsgard TVC Fifty Shades referencing buzzing it’s way across the 50 States of the USA this weekend. He’s so savvy that CK in flogging his scents range.

In other casting news & talent management in the Hollywood hood, Brits are making a wave, alongside Australia’s Hemsworth clan. Also check out: 11 British Actors Invading Hollywood’s ‘It List’ too. An actor called Lloyd would be good from Britain, as a Fed approved and bonafide potential Hollywood talent too. At this stage, I’d go the unknown local community hero casting, then Skarsgard-Ryan, at the populous vote. They’ve both certainly got what it takes to helm such a film franchise for E L James.

HOW KIRK DOUGLAS HELPED TO BREAK BLACKLIST

ABC’S David Muir zooms viewers in to celebrate the life of Kirk Douglas, as a Hollywood light who stood against censorship in a culture where politics was too heavy-handed and blacklist occurred from government. A friend and mentor named Robert, who is 91 and lives in Beverly Hills, once got black-listed because he worked as a journalist who would socialize with black people in Los Angeles when reporting.

He was Jewish, yet he could pass for Parsee. Robert was associated to Lena Horne‘s circle of friends, when Lena was black-listed as a communist. He was blacklisted too. They were crazy times. Robert is still a registered member of Pen America to this day, an organisation that is a global literary community dedicated to protecting free expression and celebrating literature in humane ways.

David Muir’s story goes: “In the 1950s Hollywood was consumed by the blacklist. Writers, producers and actors were called before Congress amid fear they might be Communists. The mere mention of a name was enough to end a career.

“It was the worst time in Hollywood,” Hollywood veteran Kirk Douglas told ABC News. “Everybody told me I was crazy.”

Crazy because as a producer of Spartacus Douglas put his own career on the line, his own fortune, to hire Dalton Trumbo, one of those writers on the blacklist.

“If you do it … you’ll never work in this town again. You will be declared a Communist,” Cleo Trumbo, Dalton’s wife said people told Douglas.

But Douglas, hired Dalton Trumbo anyway, and Spartacus became the top movie of the USA that year. The movie wasn’t only a box-office winner, it was also instrumental in breaking the blacklist.”

Douglas realized that within the face of Dalton Trumbo’s faceless story was his own story, that “there by the grace of God, go I.” He acted on that basis with integrity in liberty, in one pivotal action of inclusion that went beyond surface appearances of the milieu-of-the-day, thus changing history. With confidence in peace Douglas disciplined a system that had become drunk on power, elitist exclusion for personal gain and was blind to the image of itself, while being clearly unjust towards humanity. Kirk Douglas hacked the system of inequality and greed backed unjustly by a state system’s might.

The tyranny of the blacklist was broken. He was an agent of redemption, the only true firm foundation of real grace. Freedom returned, the marginalized advanced and Kirk Douglas included others more honestly with his spirit of wise compassion and fearless courage to love others as he wanted to be treated himself. He demonstrated: “there by the Grace of God, go us.”

To the grey-set, wise Jewish doms of Beverly Hills, California… for their humanitarian philosophical thoughtfulness… their sense of humor in displaying a wider humanitarian cause through the oft shallow glitz of show biz’s circus… we say “thank you.”

RYAN PHILLIPPE CONGRATULATES REESE WITHERSPOON WHO WILL MARRY HER AGENT TIM ROTH

“I’m very happy for both Reese and Jim.”I wish nothing but the best for the mother of my children.”–Ryan Phillipe congratulates Reese Witherspoon on her decision to marry her agent Jim Roth New York Daily News.

All I can say is–Jim must be a better agent then we all thought in the H-Wood hood. Congrats. A nice switch up for Reese in getting ready for Natalie Portman and Annette Benning‘s potential Oscars face-off in 2011. If the nod goes Benning’s way–Jerry Brown, Governor-elect of Cali and his camp of backers will be more than stoked. If it goes Portman’s way (and you always need a strong contender to create a strong newly annointed Queen as in Annette putting her face forward for Nat’s Oscar’s bid)–than Portman is our newly anointed Angelina Jolie Queen-Peer of Tinsel Town. As there can only ever be one unique individual as Jolie is.

Either way, Reese and her camp and ensuring they’re looking the part. Engaged and preferably preggers is the Oscars trend for 2011 as Portman is in both situations right now as Hollywood’s rising star Queen engaged to African-born ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied. America needs to breed and get married again. That all sort of stopped the last two or three years. Economic stress is a total romance buzz killer. Whoever thought that up – should show their faces I reckon!

Isn’t Ryan Phillipe such a gentleman. That’s the spirit. Reese’s long time agent, Steve Dontanville is going to be stoked at Reese’s future husband’s occupation. Steve had signed Reese as a child actor. American stars getting married again aligns with the uber-trend of event of the year next year that being the wedding of Prince William Windsor to Kate Middleton. Huge, global romances as a trend, coming up! It appears that Portman and Millepied have been given the nod to give Wills and Kate a reflected run for their wedding money. Nice one! Portman’s mom and agent Shelley Stevens is believed to be ecstatic. But really this blog post is about Reese and Jim’s engagement joy per se. As these two live in Hollywood, a Jewish show biz town, I’m sure they won’t mind some scotch and a Rabbi having a world on this ‘big royal romance’ trend. :)

Writes Rabbi Jason Blog: “While Cyberspace is buzzing about whether Natalie Portman’s beau is a “Member of the Tribe” or not (ABC News reports his faith is unknown), New York City-based writer Marla Garfield is working the conspiracy theory angle. She wrote on Facebook: “I doubt that Millepied is even that guy’s real last name. In French, it means ‘a thousand feet,’ and the dude plays a dancer in ‘Black Swan.’ That’s just too ridiculous to be real. I bet his last name is Schwartzenbergerfeldowitz or something.” Lol!

To celebrate the moment, I guess this would call for some Doublewood Scotch Whiskey of The Balvenie Distillery of Scottish fame. The Doublewood is described as: “The Balvenie DoubleWood is a 12 year old single malt which gains its distinctive character from being matured in two woods. Over its period of maturation it is transferred from a traditional oak whisky cask to a first fill European oak sherry cask. Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt ~ the traditional casks soften and add character, whilst the sherry wood brings depth and fullness of flavour.”
