MT TONGARIRO ERUPTION NEWS & SAFETY WARNINGS
Mt Tongariro last erupted in 1897. Flame like explosions were seen erupting from the northern side of the mountain. The eruption happened at around 11.50pm at the Te Maari craters near the Ketetahi hot springs, on the northern side of the mountain, GNS Science says.
Civil Defence says the volcanic activity could pose a threat to people in Waikato, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne, Manawatu, Wanganui, Bay of Plenty and Taranaki.
The North Island is affected by the eruption and floating ash. TVNZ has more. Some flights have been cancelled today due to ash.
White Island also has volcanic activity, occurring too.
