PETER SNELL & MURRAY HALBERG – DOUBLE OLYMPICS GOLD ATHLETES, ROME 1960
In 1960 in the Rome Olympics, Kiwi athlete Peter Snell, 27, crossed the finish line before Belgian policeman, Roger Moens in the 800m final to take gold. One hour later, another Kiwi Murray Halberg 21, took the gold in the 5000m.
The magic moment of Olympics history saw entertainers like Bing Cosby watching in the stands and the Kiwi athletes coach, Mr Arthur Lydiard.

In the year of 1960, Elvis was a big star on the music charts. Songs that these athletes were listening to on the radio included, Cathy’s Clown by The Everly Brothers and Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs‘ song Stay.
