ISLAND DWELLER WIREMU DAY-JONES GETS A VISIT FROM A RUGBY HERO
Wiremu Day-Jones got a surprise visit from a rugby hero when Piri Weepu visited the Chatham Islands on his tour of saying “thank you” to all of the supporters of Rugby World Cup event and campaign of 2011.
The story goes: “Many of the islands’ 600 residents took part in celebrations, including a community pot luck dinner and photographs with the golden trophy.
“Our support during the tournament came from all corners of New Zealand, including people here in the Chathams, so to be able to bring the cup to them is awesome,” said Weepu, whose grandfather come from the remote islands.
The cup next goes to Kaitaia on February 7, then travels way south to finish in Oamaru on April 4.”
That’s quite a tour. It is yet to be announced if the William Webb Ellis cup will be seen sailing across the Christchurch basin for an ocean visit stop in the near future.
